On the day we arrived at the house our check in time was 4 PM and we arrived on time to a house that was literally 100 degrees Fahrenheit. No one had been in the house for a week and the rental company did not think to turn the air conditioning on before our arrival. It took a full 12 hours for the house to get down to 70 degrees. The location of the house was also not ideal. You must drive about 5 minutes to get to the public Bethany beaches and than pay for parking. The gated community does not have any amenities or benefits and the gate is open throughout the day. Be aware that the kitchen is not well stocked with different sized pots and pans and you may want to bring some of your own. All of the burners on the stovetop were clogged, but the rental company did send someone out to fix this problem. There was also no functioning ice maker in the refrigerator. The coffeemaker also broke while we were there and there was no working can opener. The TV's were so old I thought I was back in the 90's. One of the bedrooms did not have cable and there were several burned out light bulbs that needed replacing throughout the house. All of the bedrooms did not have blinds and the light came pouring in early in the morning which is a bonus if you like waking up early. Please be sure to bring everything you might possibly need such as Toilet paper, paper towels, dish towels, soap and condiments as the house is not furnished with any of these items. We still managed to have a wonderful family vacation despite this poorly cared for house and you and your family probably would too but you could save yourself the aggravation and rent elsewhere in Bethany.
House had a good layout for a large group, while providing space for privacy. I especially liked the kitchen and the screened in deck, and the decks off the bedrooms.
The location was good for a non-oceanside property. It was easy to get to the beach by car or bike. The proximity to the Fresh Pond State Park made it ideal for biking.
The outdoor shower was also plus and nice to use from coming off the beach or just general use.
The house was not prepared for our arrival. In particular, the temperature when we arrived was well over 95 degrees. It would have been a simple matter for someone from the rental company to turn on the AC several hours in advance of our arrival. Because no one did, it was not until the morning after our arrival that the temperature in the house got below 80 de
The space and location were great for our group. However, when we arrived for checking in, the owners were still at the home getting it straightened up. After they left, there were still beer cans scattered around the perimeter of the home, and leftover pans and coffee from the guests before us. A fuse blew in two of the rooms; maintenance came out to check on it, but he said it was unable to be fixed during our stay. An outside door from a bedroom had a broken lock. It was reported immediately, but they did not seem concerned. We will be visiting Bethany Beach again, but unfortunately will not be staying at this particular home.
The house is actually a lot bigger in person than what you can see in the pictures, which was an awesome surprise. Everything was super clean and functional. I really loved that it was in a gated community and at the end of the block. It's nice knowing we were safe and at a distance from the neighbors for privacy sake. The group of people that I went with had such a great weekend and nothing but great things to say about the house. The people at Wilgus Associates were also very nice and helpful. I would definitely recommend their company and this house to anyone.
One thing to note: although this house is only a 1/4 mile to the beach, you should be aware that those are also gated communities, so there was no access for us. The closest place to access the beach was down at the boardwalk, so we had to pile into cars and drive a couple miles for the public beaches. Finding parking was not fun, but it was a small price to pay for having an amazing house to come back to.
