This private home is 7 miles south of Sugarloaf, has plenty of beds, parking, and living space for multiple families, and is on the weekend/holiday Sugarloaf shuttle route as well as the ITS 115 connector snowmobile trail, mountain-biking trail system, and is very close to the Maine Huts & Trails system. It’s wonderful for skiing, snowmobiling, mountain biking, fishing, hunting, hiking, and generally getting away. If you’d like to ski two world-class mountains during your stay, Saddleback is an hour drive away through Stratton and Rangeley - a quintessential Maine drive.
HOUSE - The house is a mansard A-Frame at the base of Burnt Mountain on a private wooded lot. It was built in the 70’s and has 3.5 bedrooms, a ¾ bath (no tub), and a ½ bath. Downstairs are 3.5 bedrooms, a half bath, closet, entryway, a laundry room with washer/dryer and an additional raised bunk (the .5 bedroom). The upstairs is an open floor plan with large East facing windows that fills the floor with light. Upstairs there is a ¾ bath, full kitchen with a large window facing the woods, dining room table made by owner from a large local center cut pine slab that seats 8, sofa, leather recliner, small futon, assorted chairs & small tables, and a porch with a gas grill/griddle. The house is roughly 1200 square feet.
We’ve just finished upgrading the house. We've installed new floors upstairs, refurbished the stove and replaced the chimney, gotten new furnishings throughout, and gutted and rebuilt the master bedroom with tongue & groove pine.
KITCHEN - The kitchen includes everything you’ll need, except the food, to make a family dinner. There are some kitchen basics – spices, oil, and such – to help out. There is a 4 burner electric stove top and oven, microwave, toaster oven, coffee maker as well as a Keurig, crock pot, and refrigerator.
STUFF TO DO - There are books, games, sleds, and WiFi for down-time at the house. You may want to bring snowshoes to venture out into woods a bit. The house is bordered by 100k acres of undeveloped forest and you can hike from the house, up and across Burnt Mountain, to the summit of Sugarloaf – a 6.5 mile hike for serious folks. The town recreation center is a mile up the road for summer swimming, tennis, basketball, and playground fun. There are waterfalls 4 miles away, the Narrow Gauge biking/ x-country ski path is 1 mile away, and serious mountain bike trails throughout the region are accessible from the house. Beyond these immediate things to do, Kingfield, Sugarloaf and the Anti-Gravity Center, Stratton, and Eustis have many more natural and man-made offerings.
SNOWMOBILE - The snowmobile trail is at the bottom of our 1+ acre property. Go out the front door, hop on your sleds, drive down the road 100ft to the bottom of the property, and get onto the trail.
PETS - Your pets are more than welcome at the house. If you would like to bring a pet we’ll ask for an additional $50 fee per animal per stay.
BEDROOMS - Linens will be waiting your arrival in the bedrooms, kitchen, and bathrooms. There are two larger bedrooms (12x12) and a smaller one (8x12), as well as a raised full bunk in the laundry room. One large bedroom has a queen bed, twin bunk beds, and vanity table. The other has two twin bunk beds, one with a fun set of stairs, as well as a reading nook with a cool shaped bean bag chair. The smaller room has a full bed. All bedrooms have either closet, burrow, or combination storage for your clothes and gear, as well as a humidifier.
LAUNDRY - The laundry room has a washer and dryer, significant amount of room for storage, and a raised bunk with a full mattress.
CAPACITY - Overall, the house has capacity for parking 5 vehicles. It can sleep 12 in beds, but can sleep more if you use the couch and futon. The futon is better for children and teenagers.
A welcome book will be awaiting your arrival. It will contain all the information you need to know about the house as well as some local tips. We’ll be available to you throughout your stay for questions and to handle anything that may come up with the house.
We hope you’ll come stay at our house. We’ve loved it over the years and are very fond of it. If you are interested please email with any questions you have - we've lived, worked, and played here for many years. If you would like to book, we’ll email to ask a few questions and to finalize arrival/departure times, payment logistics, to coordinate house access, and answer any further questions you have. Come and stay.
I bought the house and lived there year-round for three years when I was a full-time ski patroller at the mountain. Since that time I've moved with my family down to the South Shore of Boston where we're looking to grow. In the winter I volunteer patrol at the mountain so I can get my family free passes and we can spend our winters skiing forever. I proposed to my wife in a glade on a powder day.
We hope you will come enjoy the house, the area, the mountain, and the people as much as we do. Though, secretly, we hope not every single day is booked through the season so we can come stay too.
Eric purchased this house in 2003
This house is close enough to be convenient, off-mountain enough to be affordable, can sleep a bunch of people, and has everything you'll need.
House was great. Rooms were cozy and great for sleeping. Met Eric on first day. Super friendly and accommodating. Had a bottle of Mountain Merlot delivered on second night. Would definitely stay again. Sugarloaf was awesome and this is the place to stay for any Sugarloaf trips!
Great spot for a weekend ski vacation. Everything you need, nothing you don't. Highly recommend
My friends and I recently stayed at this home and were blown away with the comfy cozy feel to the house and all the amenities. No lie when it says house sleeps 12-14 people. There was 12 of us and we all had beds to sleep in. Perfect location only 10 minutes from the moutain and it was perfect to come back to a home we could get the wood stove going and cook up some dinner. Parking is tight but we were able to squeeze in 3 trucks and 1 car in the driveway. Place heats up quickly! Also has tons of games to play at night while hanging out and enjoying friends. Overall we enjoyed our stay and definitely would stay here again. Thanks Eric!
Unfortunately, I was very disappointed with this rental. The house is not that large, though it can fit many people...and that is because each room has beds to the max capacity. Even the laundry room has a queen size bed above the laundry machines...but it is right under the bathroom so you hear everything that is going on, and when the toilet is flushed it sound like the pipes are going to break and all the water will be on you, in the bed.
On top of that, the house was very dirty. The owner must have a dog, and there was dog hair all over the place...on the couch, the beds, floor, chairs, tables, it even got in out food (this should have been mentioned, as I have allergies and couldn't breathe, especially while sleeping), there were crumbs on the floor, bathroom toilets had pee stains on them from previous renters. We had to do a thorough clean before bringing any of our stuff into the house as I didn't want anything in the refrigerator or on the counter. I never even unpacked, I left all my clothing in my suitcase. The stairs (which are never mentioned!!) are so steep that if you don't hold on, you are going down!
To say the least my friends and I were very disapointed.
The house is warm and cozy and slept 12 people comfortably. The beds were exceptionally comfortable and the house has a lot of character.
Eric was a pleasure to work with and we hope to stay here again soon!
My friends, family, and I had a blast here. The house was spacious enough for 11 adults to relax comfortably all weekend after skiing at nearby Sugarloaf. Would recommend this property to anyone interested.
