About the property

Great vacation rental for multiple families on a budget

This private home is 7 miles south of Sugarloaf, has plenty of beds, parking, and living space for multiple families, and is on the weekend/holiday Sugarloaf shuttle route as well as the ITS 115 connector snowmobile trail, mountain-biking trail system, and is very close to the Maine Huts & Trails system. It’s wonderful for skiing, snowmobiling, mountain biking, fishing, hunting, hiking, and generally getting away.

HOUSE - The house is a mansard A-Frame at the base of Burnt Mountain on a private wooded lot. It was built in the 70’s and has 3 bedrooms and 2 3/4 baths (no tubs). We've just added a smart TV, dish washer, and a newly renovated bathroom with a shower.

Downstairs are 3 bedrooms, bathroom/laundry room, utility closet, hall closet, and entryway. The upstairs is an open floor plan with large East facing windows that fills the floor with light. Upstairs there is a ¾ bath, full kitchen with a large window facing the woods, dining room table made by owner from a large local center cut pine slab that seats 8, sofa, leather recliner, queen futon, assorted chairs & small tables, smart tv, dishwasher, and a porch with a gas grill. The house is roughly 1200 square feet. We'll get some pictures of the new bathroom up ASAP.

KITCHEN - The kitchen includes everything you’ll need, except the food, to make a family dinner. There is a 4 burner electric stove top and oven, microwave, toaster oven, coffee maker as well as a Keurig, crock pot, dish washer, and refrigerator.

STUFF TO DO - There are books, games, sleds, and WiFi for down-time at the house. You may want to bring snowshoes to venture out into woods a bit. The house is bordered by 100k acres of undeveloped forest and you can hike from the house, up and across Burnt Mountain, to the summit of Sugarloaf – a 6.5 mile hike for serious folks. The town recreation center is a mile up the road for summer swimming, tennis, basketball, and playground fun. There is a fun bowling ally 2 miles North. There are waterfalls 4 miles away, the Narrow Gauge biking/ x-country ski path is 1 mile away, and serious mountain bike trails throughout the region are accessible from the house. Beyond these immediate things to do, Kingfield, Sugarloaf and the Anti-Gravity Center, Stratton, and Eustis have many more natural and man-made offerings.

SNOWMOBILE - The snowmobile trail is at the bottom of our 1+ acre property. Go out the front door, hop on your sleds, drive down the road 100ft to the bottom of the property, and get onto the trail.

PETS - Your pets are more than welcome at the house. If you would like to bring a pet we’ll ask for an additional $50 fee per animal per stay. This fee goes directly for additional cleaning after every pet leaves.

BEDROOMS - Linens will be waiting your arrival in the bedrooms, kitchen, and bathrooms. There are two larger bedrooms (12x12) and a smaller one (8x12). One large bedroom has a queen bed, twin bunk beds, and vanity table. The other has two twin bunk beds, one with a fun set of stairs, as well as a reading nook with a cool shaped bean bag chair. The smaller room has a full bed. All bedrooms have either closet, burrow, or combination storage for your clothes and gear, as well as a humidifier.

LAUNDRY - The newly renovated downstairs bathroom is also a laundry room has a washer/dryer.

CAPACITY - Overall, the house has capacity for parking 5 vehicles. It can sleep 10 in beds, but can sleep more if you use the couch and futon. Parties of up to 8 adults and 4 children are welcome.

A welcome book will be awaiting your arrival. It will contain all the information you need to know about the house as well as some local tips. We’ll be available to you throughout your stay for questions and to handle anything that may come up with the house.

We hope you’ll come stay at our house. We’ve loved it over the years and are very fond of it. If you are interested please email with any questions you have - we've lived, worked, and played here for many years. If you would like to book, we’ll email to ask a few questions and to finalize arrival/departure times, payment logistics, to coordinate house access, and answer any further questions you have. Come and stay.

About Eric

I bought the house and lived there year-round for three years when I was a full-time ski patroller at the mountain. Since that time I've moved with my family down to the South Shore of Boston where we're looking to grow. In the winter I volunteer patrol at the mountain so I can get my family passes and we can spend our winters skiing forever. I proposed to my wife in a glade on a powder day.

We hope you will come enjoy the house, the area, the mountain, and the people as much as we do. Though, secretly, we hope not every single day is booked through the season so we can come stay too.

Eric purchased this house in 2003

Why Eric chose Carrabassett Valley

This house is close enough to be convenient, off-mountain enough to be affordable, can sleep a bunch of people, and has everything you'll need.

Nice and relaxing living room

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoy the fireplace and the living room. Little bit of dog hair on the floor except that I would have give a 5 stars.

Perfect lodge at Sugarloaf!

  • 5 of 5

We had a great stay at Eric's house and can't thank him enough! Everything was as promised and the house was clean and comfy (especially the beds, I slept in the blue room and it was the best night sleep I've had in awhile). Downstairs had 3 bedrooms which comfortably slept 10 people and the upstairs was a fun open space for us all to hang out, cook together and play different games like chess and scattegories! We were warned beforehand that the cell service was spotty but were all able to connect to wifi and use the Roku to watch the Olympics on the TV! We texted Eric for an extended departure time and he was very accommodating. Thank you for having us! We had a wonderful time and would recommend this house to any group of up to 10 adults!

House was great. Rooms were cozy and great for sleeping. Met Eric on first day. Super friendly and accommodating. Had a bottle of Mountain Merlot delivered on second night. Would definitely stay again. Sugarloaf was awesome and this is the place to stay for any Sugarloaf trips!

Wonderfull mountain cabin with close proximity to the Loaf!

  • 5 of 5

My friends and I recently stayed at this home and were blown away with the comfy cozy feel to the house and all the amenities. No lie when it says house sleeps 12-14 people. There was 12 of us and we all had beds to sleep in. Perfect location only 10 minutes from the moutain and it was perfect to come back to a home we could get the wood stove going and cook up some dinner. Parking is tight but we were able to squeeze in 3 trucks and 1 car in the driveway. Place heats up quickly! Also has tons of games to play at night while hanging out and enjoying friends. Overall we enjoyed our stay and definitely would stay here again. Thanks Eric!

Not impressed

  • 2 of 5

Unfortunately, I was very disappointed with this rental. The house is not that large, though it can fit many people...and that is because each room has beds to the max capacity. Even the laundry room has a queen size bed above the laundry machines...but it is right under the bathroom so you hear everything that is going on, and when the toilet is flushed it sound like the pipes are going to break and all the water will be on you, in the bed.

On top of that, the house was very dirty. The owner must have a dog, and there was dog hair all over the place...on the couch, the beds, floor, chairs, tables, it even got in out food (this should have been mentioned, as I have allergies and couldn't breathe, especially while sleeping), there were crumbs on the floor, bathroom toilets had pee stains on them from previous renters. We had to do a thorough clean before bringing any of our stuff into the house as I didn't want anything in the refrigerator or on the counter. I never even unpacked, I left all my clothing in my suitcase. The stairs (which are never mentioned!!) are so steep that if you don't hold on, you are going down!

To say the least my friends and I were very disapointed.

Owner's Response: Diana, I'm sorry you were unhappy with your stay. This is the first time we've ever received feedback similar to yours. Some responses to your complaints: - Yes, the beds are maximized in order to lower per person costs for groups of skiers and to allow for increased sleeping choice for mixes of couples, singles, and kids. The full sized bunk in the laundry room is mentioned specifically in the description, noted as the .5 bedroom. - Agreed, it's not a mansion. The square footage is listed in the description and we've worked hard to place furniture and other items throughout the house to make the space comfortable and usable. We also try and keep costs lower than larger houses. - I'm sorry if it wasn't clean enough. I was the last person there before you arrived. My property manager didn't come behind me. My apologies that my cleaning skills did not stack up. I should probably just get my property manager to clean before every guest instead of doing some myself. My wife probably would agree with you that my cleaning can leave something to be desired. I guess you got me back, though, by leaving the house a disaster. My property manager noted it was the worst she's seen it left in the 3 years we've been renting, including the college spring break rentals that I will no longer do. - The stairs are, actually, specifically mentioned in the house book I sent you prior to your arrival. That book highlights a few safety points for renters, including the stairs. In addition, in my email to you I asked you to pay special attention to those safety points. I guess you didn't have a chance to review that book which contains lots of info about the house and the area. We've never had an incident with or complaint about the stairs. It's an A - frame after all. We are not professional renters and this is a house built for and used by locals. We've put a lot of money and time into setting the house up for renters so we can share the great location in hopes people love it as much as we do and so that we can help pay for our family to be a skiing family. Again, I'm sorry you didn't enjoy your experience. I should have done a better job cleaning before I left. I'm also sorry that it snowed so much while you were there, making the access in and out of the driveway difficult while the storm was being cleaned up. I know you were very unhappy with that. Thanks for providing the feedback so I can improve my service for our renters.
