About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

California has cowboys, beaches and surfing, skiing, hiking and shopping all rolled into one beautiful state. Seeing Yosemite when you vacation in California is a must. For this vacation, expand your mind and enjoy a true California experience by staying in a straw bale home. Unlike those of big bad wolf fame, modern straw bale homes are warm and comfortable. They provide a unique place to rest your soul (and feet) after a day of discovering Yosemite.

Our newly constructed Yosemite Straw Bale vacation home is a wonder. While the straw bales provide incredible R-50 insulation, we are using passive solar heating for preheating our radiant floor heating system with an instantaneous hot water heater as a backup system. Our photovoltaic grid panels are naturally creating clean energy from the sun. We tested these techniques on our own home and perfected them in this vacation rental for your enjoyment. Made to feel like your private second home, design touches include a social kitchen with a granite slab bar height counter, finished dyed concrete floors, and cozy radiant floor heating. Sitting hilltop at 3000 feet elevation (914m), the house includes a private deck perfect for relaxing and enjoying the views. We are also honored to share with you, eight fine art prints by renowned Sierra photographer Howard Weamer.

The gates of Yosemite are a mere 35 minutes away* on a drive that follows the wild and scenic Merced River. (*Your drive may take longer as you stop to put your feet in the river or photograph the wildflowers along the way.)

Delightful

  • 5 of 5

From the photographs I was expecting a nice place but in this case they didn't do it justice. It's a lovely home, beautifully equipped with everything you can think of and gorgeous views. Would recommend to anyone with no hesitation.

Relax and feel at home!

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at the straw bale house was wonderful. There is a solidness to the home that helps to create a very peaceful experience. The beds were comfortable, the furnishing welcoming and the kitchen was well stocked. There were some highlights for sure. One was the amazingly beautiful view from the window seat in the living room. Another was the patio, both day and night, but particularity for the evening for us. We loved the artwork but was most taken with the small framed section of the straw beneath the plaster walls. We regretted not having more time to spend there but enjoyed all of it that we did.

Other details: Plenty of towels, very clean, rock road to get to house, quiet neighbors, no window coverings on the main living area so twin bed sleeper (in living room) might wake with daybreak.

Thanks Kathleen for great communication as well.

We really enjoyed the stay here. Kitchen was well stocked, Bedrooms and toilets were super clean. As this was first trip for my newborn son, house has good heating and they have pack and play (crib/bassinet) available (I was super impressed :) ). I will really look forward to stay next time during my next winter trip to Yosemite.

Thanks

Aparna

Fantastic home for Thanksgiving get together.

  • 5 of 5

Yosemite is half way between my home in Phoenix and our daughter's home in Oregon, so we decided to enjoy the National Park for Thanksgiving. Our granddaughter is only 9 months old and we wanted to spend more quality time with her than you can get in a hotel. I found this lovely home on VRBO and it was perfect. The two bedrooms were very private, each with their own bathroom. The baby loved crawling on the stained, concrete floors and looking out the window from the window seat (which doubles as a trundle bed) in the living room. We brought a bunch of pre-cooked meals with us, so that all we had to do was heat them up, but all the tools we needed were available. The kitchen was super easy to work in and the big dining table was perfect for family meals and game nights. The view from the house was beautiful. We did not explore the area as we spent our days in Yosemite, but it looked like a lovely place to just hang out and the town of Mariposa is just a short trip down the road in case you forgot anything. If visiting the area, my family and I would happily stay here again.
