This house was in complete disrepair, I am shocked and in disbelief that anyone would have positive things to say about it. When I was reading the reviews I saw a couple of negative reviews, but there had been positive ones since, so I decided to give them the benefit of the doubt and assume the previous issues had been fixed. That was a terrible mistake on my part. I have detailed pictures of everything but if there isn't a way to post them with my review, I will be leaving a review of this home on tripadvisor as well and you can view the photos there if you care to. I live in a house that is almost 100 years old, I appreciate and adore older homes, the conditions of this house are not complaints about the house being older. It was deplorable. Water was leaking down the inside of the walls and running down the floor. There was no rain, it had to be a pipe. I emailed this to the owner with the terrible condition we found the house to be in as well as the leaking water and he said that he just had the roof fixed, but the leak wasn't due to a leaky roof. Paint was bubbling and peeling off the walls and laying on the floor, most of the ceilings on the main floor had huge water stains covering them, the floors had not been vacuumed or cleaned in any way, there's a large stain on the living room rug (pet urine I suspect), crusted stained pillows on the living room couch, dead bugs along every wall, ants were EVERYwhere in the kitchen and floors of the living room nonstop and bugs of every species in general could be found.Trying to make the best of it, I spent my first full day of vacation cleaning and bleaching the house. The vacuum cleaners at the house just spit the dirt, paint chips and bugs all over the hard floors so the owners promptly sent over a new vacuum for me. To be fair I emailed the owners immediately with how upset and disgusted we were with the house condition. They said the cleaning crew would come the next day again, but I had already fully cleaned the house. There were plug in air fresheners in every room that I had to remove because they give me terrible headaches. It didn't take long for the strong urine smell to take over after that.Because of everything listed, none of us wanted to eat or cook in the house despite having brought food for the entire week as we always do. We spent an additional, and unexpected $800+ on eating out for our family of 5. It was the worst experience we have ever had, no refund was offered of any kind.
We had 4 adults, 2 children, and a Labrador Retriever, and we all enjoyed the house very much. We stayed for a week in late August, and got incredibly lucky with fantastic weather. We were very appreciative of the fenced back yard, and the home had a light and comfortable feel. Lots of natural light, plenty of window AC units, and a well-stocked kitchen. The house has places that aren't level, and corners that show wear, but nothing you wouldn't expect, and nothing that bothered us in the slightest. Very clean and well kept place.
If we do come back to Chinoteague, we'd be very likely to stay in this house again. And having the islands oldest ice cream parlor (Muller's) right across the street is not to be beat! :-)
We just got back from a week-long stay in Chincoteague. Salty Dog's Lair was perfect! It was wonderful to be walking distance from the grocery store, the church, Mueller's ice cream and just a short drive to Assateague. There were plenty of bikes in the garage and the back porch was great for nightly dinners. I hope to stay here again!
This house is rather old. There are issues with roof leaking in several places when it rains. Water spots on ceilings, torn wallpaper, falling ceiling tiles in kitchen, plumbing in half bath, no outlet cover for ac unit in living room, and warped/soft floors are poorly maintained. Pictures on this sight do not show these issues. Called maintenance man and he said some of these issues have been a problem for awhile. Very disappointed.
I thought the house was just what my wife and I were looking for. We loved being in town and within walking distance to just about everything that we go and do. The yard in the back was perfect for our dog and was bigger than I thought it would be. The Grill was very nice and also better than I thought it would be. We had no issues with the interior of the house and liked the open layout. We have been going to Chincoteague every summer for the last 10 years and this experience was one of the best. We will look to come back again this year or next summer and we will strongly recommend the property to anyone who asks.
Normally when we have stayed in Chincoteague, we have chosen a location on the water for the great views and boat/fishing access. This time we wanted to bring our two dogs, so we compromised on location. However, we were pleasantly surprised with the convenience of being in town. We could walk to the bay, restaurants, sugar bakers bakery, grocery store, ice cream parlor, flea market, art show, and fish market. There are even places to fish and launch a boat right close by. The house also had a propane grill and fenced in yard which was great for the dogs. Also, they had two kayaks and three functioning bicycles (two others had tire issues), which was great for touring the island. The island is not particularly pet friendly (no pets in Assateague or at Memorial Park, but we did find one nice park on Hallie Whealton Smith Drive. The house was nice and clean and functional. It is an old house and bathrooms were a tight squeeze but it had everything we needed. Kitchen was well stocked with cooking supplies and even coffee filters and spices, so that was a big help.
