This home is a nature lovers paradise! It is nestled in a beautiful garden full of flowers and fruit trees AND is only 200 yards from the warm waters of the Caribbean. The yard is so full of wildlife that you will see more animals, birds, and reptiles than you will in the Cahuita National Park. On almost any given day, you will see or hear toucans, iguanas, exotic butterflies, sloths, parrots, howler monkeys, agoutis, or tropical frogs. This home is very unique in Cahuita. No other home in our town will allow you such a personal relationship with nature. We are fortunate that a wild sloth that has chosen to live in our Almendra tree only 5 meters from the house!.
This home provides you the opportunity to immerse yourself in the real Costa Rica without sacrificing any modern conveniences. You will have a full sized kitchen with quality brand name appliances, wifi internet, a safe for your laptop and other valuables, an on demand tankless hot water, and an American purification system for drinking water.
If you choose to leave this Garden of Eden, within a 5 minute walk from the house you can – take a surf lesson, go horseback riding, snorkel, savor the delicious local cuisine of the Paradise Restaurant or enjoy the calming vibes at Reggae Bar.
Downtown Cahuita is a mere 15 minute walk away – just far enough to ensure your tranquility yet not so far that you will need a car. There you will find a mix of wonderful restaurants, shops, bars and tour agencies to cater to your individual needs.
And don’t forget the Cahuita National Park. There you can play on the beach, kayak or simply admire the acrobatic skills of monkeys as you walk through the jungle.
If comparing listings, may I suggest a few questions you ask the owners prior to making a decision:
1) Will I have to cross a highway from your home to reach the beach?
2) From your home, is the nearest access to the ocean made of sand or huge old coral formations?
3) Do you have a purification system for drinking water? Don't lose precious vacation time due to stomach illness.
4) Can I flush toilet paper down the toilet or will I have place it in a waste bin next to the toilet?

I went to university and spent my adult life in Los Angeles. My traveling outside the U.S. had been pretty limited. In 1996 I decided to visit Costa Rica. The wildlife, friendly people, and warm beautiful waters made me fall in love. From that point forward I decided to save money and move to Costa Rica as soon as possible. That was finally accomplished in 2006. I now allow people to rent my home not only to help provide me with income but more importantly share the true Costa Rica in a true home and community with others. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. PS That is Bruno in the profile picture with me.

I chose Cahuita after spending a lot of time in other areas of Costa Rica and Central America. I have found it to be what I had always envisioned paradise to be - sunny, warm, green, full of wildlife and culture.
My wife and I stayed at Troy's to escape the cold of Canada. It was perfect. We were looking for a place to relax near the beach, with lots of wild life but not too far from town. Troy is a very gracious host- meeting us at the house to explain what to do, where to go and basically just familiarize us with the area. We felt right at home instantly. The house is very well-maintained and provided us with every comfort we could have hoped for. The internet is super fast, filtered water and little things like a coffee grinder were all really appreciated. Cahuita is a very sweet little beach community. The kind of place where everyone says hello. We enjoyed our stay and will definitely be back. Thanks again Troy!
The yard is fantastic with Tree frogs, poison dart frogs, howler monkeys and a sloth.
The kitchen had the essentials to make breakfast before heading out for the day. There is a cute market to buy limited essentials upon arrival and town is a short walk to hit bigger stores if needed..
The reggae bar is a nice place to grab a drink. We did not get to meet Troy but his friend, Cameron was soooooo helpful with information on the area and fixing a small problem with the WiFi and even helping us find a rental car for a day of exploring on our way back to the airport. . I would recommend getting down to Punta Uva for an amazing beach and Manzaillo is also stunning. Cahuita national park just a short walk away is a slice of heaven and you can see howler and capuchin monkeys, sloths, crabs, frogs and amazing lizards. We went more than once.
Pura Vida and thank you Troy for letting us stay at your place .
I stayed at Troy's house in Cahuita for two nights recently. When I arrived, I was amazed by the lush, green gardens, and the friendly welcome by Troy. He showed us the house, how things worked, and let us know he was around if we needed him. The house is really cute--very nice furnishings and decorations. Super clean! Great kitchen. I loved the room upstairs with the hammock on the balcony--perfect place to sit and look for Bruno, the resident sloth. The beach is a quick walk--about 5 minutes. It's such a long, beautiful beach, and every morning, it was just me and maybe one other person enjoying the daybreak. The house is in walking distance to quite a few restaurants and little bars, and the center of town is about 5 minutes away. It's also about 5 minutes from Cahuita National Park which is a must see when you're staying there. We snorkeled out on the reef which was awesome. I highly recommend staying at this comfy home--it has so much to offer, and Troy is a wonderful host. Looking forward to my next visit!
What a wonderful place to stay for our honeymoon - Troy's had everything and more! We stayed for five nights and barely left the property! His home is perfect for those that want wildlife and the comforts of home. We were up at 6:30 every morning to walk on the secluded beautiful beach, enjoyed the balcony for reading, and the front porch for viewing wildlife - (Bruno the sloth is so cute!) We walked to the restaurants and shops and loved the variety. Troy does a great job of maintaining the property and making sure their guests are taken care of. We will be back! Highly recommend for couples or families.
When we looked at our options for staying in or near Cahuita, and we saw that this house comes with a sloth or two plus a toucan, and is a close walk to the beach, we were sold! Troy is the most amazing landlord ever. He knows the area very well and is happy to assist you in finding whatever it is you are looking for in the area. He knows many of the local guides, where the buses go, what's happening for local events, where to shop, when are the best times to go to various places including the Parque National. He truly desires for your stay to be as excellent as possible. He promptly attends to any questions or issues related to the property or the area. He taught us how to find the animals who camouflage themselves so well in the trees, and how to listen for the toucans, as they make an unusual sound. Having Troy to ask questions of is like having a 5 star concierge at a big hotel, but you are staying at a cute little jungle home which is such a close walk to the beach. In Cahuita, some areas are coral rocks and not beachy at all, but this home is about 2 blocks from a gorgeous black sand beach with shade trees going right up to the beach. This means that one can enjoy as much beach time as one desires because if you take a few steps back, you are in the shade canopy but still see and hear the ocean. And the Reggae Bar is just across the street from the beach- one of our favourite places. Try the mojitos there- really great- and then walk down the road to take the tour of the local organic farm whose owner grows the limes and mint for the mojitos! Old Reef Farm is found along the beach road just north of the Reggae Bar, with 3 tours a day at 9, 12, and 3. For $12 USD you can bring a big box and during the tour fill it up for free with some of the 200 varieties of fruits and spices growing there. Ask for Ramon. There is a farmers market in town on Sunday mornings. We heard some great live music while we were in Cahuita- reggae and calypso. The regional food is delicious. The fish is so fresh. At the house, there were so many dart frogs and some agoutis who would come by regularly twice a day. We could see monkeys in the trees sometimes from the house. We loved the hammock on the second floor terrace. The kitchen was very well set up and had the basics. Troy even leaves a bag of most excellent Costa Rican coffee for the guests. We felt so welcomed and cared for by Troy while we were there. It is a hot and humid place. You will not need much clothes at all.
