Pahala Condo Rental Photos and Description

Condo, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-3)

Welcome to Black Sand Beach Condo. The Sea Mountain condos are located on the South end of the Big Island only 60 minutes from Hilo and 80 minutes from Kona and 25 minutes from Volcano National Park. The two closest towns are Naaleau (7 miles South) and Pahala (5 miles North). Unit #56 has been totally remodeled is one of the nicest units in the complex. It is a full size one bedroom (not a studio advertised as a one bedroom).

We are a five minute walk from one of the best, most quaint, beaches on the Island, the Punalu'u Black Sand Beach. This is a nesting ground for giant sea turtles and they often rest on the beach. The Black Sand Beach Condo is surrounded by a beautiful eighteen-hole golf course, with many ocean views. There are four tennis courts for the Sea Mountain guests to use free of charge.

Nice place if you want to stay at Black Beach exclusively

  • 3 of 5

The condo has everything you need when it comes to a well-stocked kitchen and necessities for a day at the beach. The property is probably the closest you can get to Black Beach. The walk down to the beach is about a quarter of a mile, so if you have a lot of things you want to take down to the beach, you'll still need to drive. If you go early, drive around the main public parking lot and over to the other entrance where you're steps away from walking on black sand. When they say to stock up on groceries and other food supplies, they meant it. The closest "store" is this little shop in Volcano Village, which is about 28 miles from the unit. Needless to say, bread, eggs, milk and other common items are pricey to say the least. Inside the unit the only air flow you have is a ceiling fan in the bedroom (probably needs replacing because the bearings squeak a bit when you have it on a higher setting) and one in the living room. Make sure a be dressed when moving around the living room and especially the kitchen. The only covering on the deck sliding door is a bamboo-like curtain. There's also a huge picture window looking into the kitchen, but the blind was missing so it was wide open to look into from the parking lot and other units across from where you are staying. When it comes to TV and Internet, you have a wide selection of channels to watch on the Time Warner cable service. However, the only TV in the unit is a 24" flat-screen mounted above the closet containing the small washer/dryer unit. WiFI is spotty at best. If you want to surf the Net or do other things online, you're better off using your phone service as a hot spot. It's not a bad base for visiting the Volcano National Park, just be prepared for a 45-minute drive each way (speed limit max is 55, and also parts where it's 45MPH). If your sole purpose is to have a place to stay close to Black Beach, this is it.

Owner's Response: Actually, there is a small store 5 miles away from the condo in the town of Pahala. They stock all the basics like milk, eggs, a few meats and vegetables. I do recommend doing your main shopping in Hilo or Kona through. I don't understand why the WiFi was spotty though. We just had a new system put in so our unit has it's own WiFi and not shared with the complex. You are the first person to complain about it? I will look into it.

Our Favorite Big Island Getaway!

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed at this Black Sand Beach Condo several times, and every time we stay there, we love it even more. The condo is awesome - maybe one of the nicest in the complex. Which is good and bad, because when your family stays in a different unit nearby, they always want to hang out at our "house." :) The location of this condo is perfect. It's quite and private, and a couple of minutes walk away from the black sand beach and the lovely seat turtles. Having a full kitchen is so convenient, and we also use the grills at the pool nearly every night. We can't wait to return to this little slice of paradise. Thank you!

Peace and Quiet

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking for a quiet, relaxing time away from the faster pace of Kona, or Hilo, you've found it here.

Spent 4 days here after 10 nonstop days in Kona, and what a contrast. You can here a pin drop outside, especially after dark, and in morning open up door and sit on deck enjoying only sounds of birds and waves crashing on lava in distance.

Pros : Quiet, pool and hot tub very nice, and close to Volcano.

Cons: Other than Black Sand beach and Volcano, attractions very far away.

Tips: Get food in Kona at Costco, or KTA in Hilo before coming, two small towns nearby but very expensive for even most basic items, if they even have.

If you need to get gas or extra food, go back towards Kona to Oceanview to get, much cheaper and better variety if you forgot something .

Kau Coffee Mill is a must! Good coffee and very nice staff.

South Point area: First place after starting South Point on right is Paradise Meadows and second is on left farther down is Ka lae coffee.

Both are must stops and have hidden bonuses, ask staff, they will tell or show you.

Thanks again to the owner Bruce for use of your comfortable and quiet condo, and would recommend or come again myself.

Great Stay!

  • 5 of 5

A wonderful condo that exceeded our expectations. We really enjoyed our stay and look forward to staying there again. Living in North Kohala, we rarely make it to this side of the island and the location is perfect for exploring the area.

We loved this place. It had a wonderful view and you really felt like you were away from the rest of the world in a beautiful condo. I took my mom and she loved it, the comfy bed, tastefull decor, jacuzzi and the pool. I loved having time to explore a part of the Island that I havent been to before. Punalu'u is wonderful and remote, but having such a nice place gives you a lot of comfort. We will be back, it truly is a piece of paradise.

True Peaceful Hawaiian Experience

  • 4 of 5

This condo has been my husband and myself's refuge from cold winter for several years in a row. While we were not able to visit this past year due to illness, we are booked to come back again and would not hesitate to recommend this condo to others. The area is quiet with spectacular scenery.

Bruce has a nicely kept condo with good supplies. One can sit on his deck and watch the waves splash the lava rocks.

The area is minimally supplied with restaurants and grocery stores. Do a bit of preplanning of meals for eating in the condo, make a list and shop up in Kona or Hilo on the way down to the condo and you will be well set up for a relaxing time.

Restaurants are a 7 - 20 km drive. The nearest grocery is in Naalehu or Pahala.

Ice Cream trips are a must, a short 7 minute drive up to Naalehu at the Punaluu Bake Shop and pick up a loaf of fresh baked bread or a sweet bakery treat there at the same time.

The Black Sand Beach is very scenic, we love to sit and watch the crashing waves and bask in the warm breezes. It is a 5 minute walk from the condo. The large turtles are amazing to watch flopping in the water and trudging slowly up the sand beach to lie in the sun.

The Volcano area is about 20 minutes drive and very worthwhile. Take some warm clothing as it is high elevation at the site.

You will find this condo clean and adequately stocked. Bruce is available by phone or email for any difficulties or questions one might have and has an on-site person to assist with any difficulties that might crop up during your stay.

You will enjoy your experience in this treasured area.
