|Minimum Stay||2 nights|
From the moment you enter through the soaring Douglas fir trees in the front yard, you realize the feeling of “Tranquility.”
You are far away from the highway, and the only sounds you will hear are the captivating flow of the McKenzie River, the call of nearby birds, and the rustle of breeze through the forest.
The most memorable feature of the house will be sitting on the covered-deck...watching the mesmerizing McKenzie River flow by…so peaceful and tranquil.
The living room is a wide expanse of glass windows overlooking the beautiful river and the forested riverbank. From your couch, or chairs, you can enjoy the fireplace, or watch and hear osprey, ducks, kingfishers, and songbirds. Look downward towards the fishermen floating by who are fishing for steelhead, salmon and trout.
If nature’s beauty is not enough, there is an HDTV, a PS3, and high-speed internet for your further relaxation and enjoyment.
The kitchen is fully equipped and is situated to encourage lively conversation with family or friends, or gaze out at the forest through the front windows, or the river through the living room windows.
The spacious main bedroom has a king-size bed. The second bedroom has a queen-size bed. And, the third bedroom has 2 twin-size beds. Each bedroom has a beautiful view of the river, and plenty of comfort and closet space.
Local, skilled fishing guides can make your ‘fishing stories’ true! An Oregon State Salmon hatchery is a short walk across the street. One of Oregon’s most iconic covered bridges is just up the road. Drive across the nearby Leaburg dam to see the huge sturgeon at the Leaburg Fish Hatchery. In late summer, pick blackberries in the backyard for your breakfast, or to top your ice cream after dinner. Or, ride a bike down a quiet country lane to the pick-your-own blueberry patch, a beautiful 10-minute bicycle ride away.
The University of Oregon in Eugene is a 30-minute drive to the West. In addition to the shopping malls, there is a fantastic, leisurely bike trail for the whole family near the University along both banks of the Willamette River. Tokatee Golf Club is a 30-minute drive upriver to the East, and the 9-hole McKenzie River Golf Course is 5 minutes away. Hoodoo Ski area is about 60 miles upriver to the East on Highway 126. Side-trips to Portland, or the Oregon Coast, are a 2-hour drive.

We spent 4 nights here while attending the Olympic Trials in Eugene.
Let's start with the good:
This location is amazing! Beautiful views from almost every window. Good space for a family. Well-equipped kitchen. Clean. Lovely quiet street. private. The owner was very kind and was available when we had questions during an unfortunate power outage (caused by an accident on the main highway.)
Now for the not-so-good:
We arrived at night and followed the entry instructions. Thankfully, the cleaning staff (I assumed) turned on the water and electricity so we didn't have to fumble around to do it as the instructions said. Let's just say first impressions are everything... Upon entering the laundry room, we fumbled around to find the lights, and were overwhelmed by a very heavy musty smell that permeated the house and never went away. We bought candles but it did little to help. Advice to the owner would be to purchase a dehumidifier and air it out, have guests enter through the main door (with a porch light), and always leave utilities on for the guests.
Other things that need attention: 1. The TV did not work well - beyond being able to watch. Perhaps it was the service cutting in and out, but it wasn't watchable the entire stay. We don't watch TV much, but after a day at the trials, we would have enjoyed watching to catch some of the highlights and stories of the day. 2. There was path to the water and I was looking forward to exploring it with my camera. However, the path was completely overgrown with briars. It would just take a little effort to maintain it, but a lot more effort to clear it after it gets out of hand. 3. The deck was lovely and peaceful, but some boards are deteriorating and in need of repair, to the point that they seem unsafe. 4. The listing advertised laundry facilities, but they were very old, and the washer required 'special' instructions to get it to work. Then when we pulled our clothes out of the dryer, we discovered 4 shirts had terrible snags from something. 3 had to be tossed. While I have no proof that it was caused by the machines, I'm not sure what else would have caused it. The shirts included a favorite shirt from the 2012 trials 5. The house simply needs updating. For the price we paid, we were disappointed. We've stayed in many VRBO's and this was the first that we felt like the price didn't line up with the quality of the home.
A little TLC will go a long way to bring this place to life.
The house in a comfortable three bed room single story ranch with a marvelous view of the the McKenzie River. We will look forward to coming back again and taking advantage of the McKenzie River trail...something we were not able to do this go around. Relaxing and beautiful are apt descriptions.
We loved our stay at Tranquility Base! It was exactly the get away we needed during our trip to Eugene and Portland. Quiet, cozy, well-stocked, large enough for our five children and extra dinner guests as well! The master bedroom is generous in size and allowed further seclusion for my husband and me. Several rooms have a lovely view or access to the back deck. The fireplace was a huge hit and we played a lot of chess. The gaming system allowed us to watch a movie one night and the furniture in the living room can be moved around easily for whatever activity you're doing. The basketball goal was perfect for the boys and we did all the laundry we needed to. Plenty of bathroom access. Cozy sleeping. Not one creepy crawly in the house. We look forward to booking again!
Very pretty and peaceful setting on the McKenzie river, quiet well maintained neighborhood, not too far from town yet close to parks and hiking. The home is older but clean and has a good floor plan. The kitchen is small but there is a nice sized great room with windows. Overall, the house is a little too spartan in furnishings for our taste and lacks some creature comforts that would have made a big difference. For a vacation home, you really need better entertainment features such as cable TV, a larger TV, and a DVD player (funky PS2 system is not user friendly). A better internet speed/capacity would also help to accommodate multiple users. The home could also benefit from a few other touches that would have made our stay more enjoyable: deck is lovely but replace plastic chairs with comfortable outdoor furniture, add black-out curtains in the bedrooms, coffee-maker and BBQ are sized a bit small for a house that sleeps six. Overall, we enjoyed our stay.
One of the best places my family and I stayed in during our summer vacation in Oregon. The house was perfect for relaxation and its view of Mckenzie River was breath taken. Also, the house was neat and clean, stuffed with everything we needed. John, the owner was very kind assisting us in even a small matters.
We were fortunate to pick this house.
The owner went over and above to meet my crazy requests when trying to somehow arrange this last minute vacation with my boys. get my boys. We all got to spend the first night at the river house together and we slept soundly in very comfortable beds, hearing the sound of the river as we drifted off. We awoke in this resort-like home on the McKenzie River, drank our coffee while taking in all the beauty and serenity of our surroundings. Made a wonderful breakfast, finding everything we needed to make that happen and then some. Enjoyed some fishing just 30 steps down from the deck out our back doors. Love how you can see the river from any room in the house! We went mountain biking on the McKenzie Trail, stopped at the Vida Cafe for a bite, played some checkers upon our return (which were provided). Tonight it's just my youngest son and I and as I fall asleep once again listening to the mesmerizing sound of the river. Im feeling more at peace than I have in months. This get away was much needed and we couldn't have found a better place to spend it! It's perfect! THANK YOU!
