The house was designed and built by the owners in 1982. It is on a 6.5 acre plot with no other houses within sight or within earshot. In Westchester close to Rye, White Plains, Mount Kisco, Bedford Hills, Katonah, Chappaqua, New York City, Greenwich, Stamford.
The top floor has a master bedroom that has its own large dressing room. Attached to it is a twin room, great for accommodating young children close by. There are two additional large bedrooms with queen beds and their own full bathrooms. Laundry is on the same floor as the bedrooms for easy access.
On the main floor is the kitchen, dining room, living room and study. There are also three walk in closets: one in the mudroom and two in the hall. The kitchen is fully stocked with a recently replaced oven and stove top, with utensils, flatware and pots & pans. Just outside the kitchen is a terrace with a rose bush growing over a trellis and a bubbling fountain amidst a lushly planted garden. There is a table and chairs with an umbrella for dining outside when the temperature is right.
The dining room is attached to the kitchen and has space at the dining table for 6-8 people. The dining room connects to the living room which has french doors that open on to a large terrace that looks over the gardens, also an option for dining outdoors. The living room has a wood burning fire place.
Down the hall from the living room is the study which also has a wood burning fireplace, as well as a large desk for anyone needing to get work done. The bookcases are stocked with books for those inclined to read.
The playroom on the bottom floor of the house opens up to the gardens has two full bed fold out sofas and room for air mattresses, if additional space is needed. It also acts as a great rec room for children (or adults!) to play.
The outdoors is wonderful in summer and winter alike. The classical English gardens are professionally designed and consistently maintained which creates a lush and chic environment.
The summer time is ideal for playing or dining outdoors and making use of the heated pool. The Mianus River is a 10 minute walk where you can hike along the river as far as you'd like to go, fish, or look for rose quartz. In the winter there are two large hills on the property great for sledding, and the hike to the river is very beautiful at this time as well.
Bedford is a very private and quaint escape from larger cities, but has access to ample attractions close by. Manhattan is an easy drive or train away (1 hour), ski towns in Vermont and Upstate NY are within a couple of hours drive, Storm King Art Center is an hour away, Ward Pound Ridge Reserve is 20 minutes away, and there is a strong community of road cyclists in the area who enjoy the winding back roads of Westchester County.
The house has both AC and heating and is well insulated, keeping it very cozy in the depths of winter.
The house is great for a family vacation, lodging for those in town for a wedding or other major event, a reunion, a group of friends who want to get away from Manhattan for a long weekend, or anyone who wants a peaceful escape.
Henry and Alice grew up in this house and went to high school in Greenwich, Connecticut (20 minute drive away). Alice went to the University of Wisconsin, Madison and Henry went to Wesleyan University. Alice now lives in San Francisco and Henry in London. Alice and Henry are both avid cyclists, Henry is also an avid runner and Alice an avid skier and rock climber. We look forward to sharing our beloved home with others!
Alice & Henry purchased this house in 1982
Henry and Alice love this house, and Bedford. It's a wonderful place to have called home with lots of time spent outdoors, summer dinners on the terrace, and exploring in the area. We go back several times a year to have a delicious dinner at The Post, go back for yoga in the morning and then venture to Manhattan to have a night out on the town at one of the many world class bars and restaurants. We love that the property is spacious, private and quiet, while still being close to a major city. It strikes a great balance between having a place to stretch our legs while also not being too far afield form the culture and conveniences of a major urban city.
There is a hammock in the apple orchard that provides a great perch to watch the sun go down from. Strolling the property after dinner while the fireflies come out, the stars appear and you start to hear the crickets. The property is wooded all around, with old, massive maples that shade the property with dappled sunlight during the summer.
The heated pool is a highlight with chaises for lounging, and an electrical outlet for a boombox or anything else you'd like to plug in by the pool.
We LOVED our stay at this amazing property! We live in NYC and rented this house from May-October as a "country get away" for our family of 4 (2 adults and 2 kids age 9 and 12) and enjoyed our stay so much we are coming back again this year for the same time! The property is so well taken care of both inside and outside, and the lay out of the house was perfect for our family. Upstairs is a lovely large master bedroom/bathroom and 3 large guest rooms with baths (1 with an ensuite newly renovated very nice bathroom). The 1st floor study and living room space is comfortable and we loved the fireplaces in each room. The house is the perfect blend of modern conveniences, comfortable family spaces, and old world charm..The gardens and grounds are highlight of this property. My favorite thing to do at sunset is sit on the back porch/covered verandah and enjoy the beautiful views of the gardens and lower meadow. The outdoor dining area is next to a gorgeous garden which made dining outside a real treat. The house is set back far from the road making this property very private and quiet..I never heard any noise from the road or neighboring properties. The owners and property manager were extremely attentive and responsive to any request or questions we may have had. They are so nice and went above and beyond to make sure our stay was pleasurable. We love Bedford as a year round getaway only 1 hour from NYC..It has the perfect balance of "country experience", with Mianus River Gorge hiking trails a few miles away, quaint Bedford village, farmers markets, but also the convenience of larger suburban towns a 15 minute drive away (movie theaters, bowling alleys, etc..). We have rented in Bedford before and have friends that have also rented in the area and would highly recommend this property over others I have seen. We had such a great experience here!
Bedford is serene and quaint. The house is driving distance from Bedford and is very private, beautiful and quiet. It's a safe place for a family to let kids run around outside, and is great for groups as there are no neighbors to disturb.
Bigger cities nearby such as Stamford or Mount Kisco have Target stores, large movie theaters, restaurants, bars and other establishments that come with a larger urban city. Go farther afield (1 hour drive) and you will be in Manhattan with access to the museums, broadway shows, music and other attractions of New York City.
Other notable nearby attractions are Saint Matthews Church in Bedford Village, Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts, Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, and much more.
