At home in Middleton

  • 5 of 5

It was the second time we wanted to visit our son Ben in Madison, and when planning our stay in the USA, we decided that for a family meeting a hotel would not be the right choice. So we asked our friend, the Internet :-), to find an apartment or a house for us. There were several offers, but when reading the reviews of Joan's and Steve's property, we only found comments praising the house, the surrounding, the neighbourhood to Madison, the hosts 5 stars.

So we asked our son Ben to inspect this house personally, and there was at once a heartily welcome to him by Joan. She showed him the house and explained everything : Ben's feedback was : This is our house!

When we arrived after a 24 hours trip from Germany to Middleton, we could only confirm Ben's feedback - it was our house and our home for our stay in the USA. Everything was prepared for us, was clean and cosy, a wonderful living room, a large kitchen - our meeting point - , 3 comfortable bedrooms - so that everybody had the chance to be on his own for a while if he wanted to be - , 2 bathrooms equipped with more than enough soft and cuddly towels, a huge garage and a front porch for the first cup of coffee in the morning.

We learned how to roast marshmellows at the fireplace, we had a great barbecue with Joan and Steve, we often used the kitchen for cooking our own meals - and everything we needed was there.

We enjoyed this oldtimer-airport , and sitting outside in the evening especially I was very happy when a plane arrived for landing and they turned on the lights - wonderful. That was as good as the lightning bugs illuminating the night (we have never seen them before and thought our jet lag was tricking us ).

Another great advantage was the fact that the beltline was only a few minutes away, so we could reach Madison within short - and not only Madison.

This location was ideal for all day trips we made - and we made a lot.

Our summary: At the end of our holidays in Middleton, nowbody wanted to leave, as we didn't miss anything - our family was happy there, the house was georgeous, the landscape so lovely, Joan and Steve warming our heart.

If there is a chance, we will come back - thank you giving us a home.

Spacious, clean, and great location

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay. The house met all our needs. The inside was clean and comfortable. We loved the pastoral environment outside. The house is in a great location, just a few minutes to downtown or to the north or west sides of Madison.

Great place to unwind!

  • 4 of 5

Fresh raspberries from Joan's garden were waiting for us when we arrived! We especially enjoyed the deck: watching the planes land and take off, star gazing, and watching the wildlife that included cranes and ground squirrels.

There's a path a few doors down to the south with a sign that reads "no motor vehicles". We walked for 5 minutes and came to a spot with a better view of the airport runway.

Plenty of space and great accomodations! Thanks Joan!

Great spot for a mini reunion

  • 4 of 5

The home was perfect for our mini family reunion. It was spacious and the kitchen was the best equipped one yet. We enjoyed walking, running and biking on the trail system that connects right by the house and cooking out on the deck. The only ding was that we were disappointed there was no cable or satellite tv since we were counting on watching the NBA finals!

Room for all, including the little ones:)

  • 5 of 5

We had 5 glorious days at Joan and Steve's lovely Midwestern ranch style home. It was nicer than the photos.

The drive to the home from the Madison airport is so lovely, expansive corn fields and huge dairy farms. And it only took about 25 minutes.

We hadn't spoken to Joan so I wasn't sure how we'd get in but she had left the garage door open. It's a safe plan when the owner is either at home across the street, or on the tractor tilling the garden next to the house (which was where they were when we arrived). You get to experience real farming out here!

Upon entering we were struck by the cleanliness of the house.

Spacious bathrooms and bedrooms in the hall, away from the dining, family and sun rooms.

The kitchen was perfect for our purposes. We ate all our meals in so it got lots of use.

The home is very bright and welcoming.

All appliances in excellent working order. The dishwasher is loud, so use it during the day. But the dishes came out squeaky clean without spots.

The water is very cold, tasty and soft. So don't try to keep rinsing off in the shower, haha. We never had a problem with the shower or bath. there were loads of clean, soft towels and wash cloths.

We didn't have to buy toilet paper, spices or condiments as there was plenty. The pantry was pretty well stocked with paper goods too (a nice surprise). We did buy soap, laundry and dishwasher cubes but we left them if you are there any time soon. And there were supplies at the house, we just preferred our own.

We had 2 elderly folks (> 80), 4 other adults and 2 small kids (4 and 18 mths) in our party. We hosted a high school graduation party on the Sunday afternoon with about 25 people.

The 2 acre property made the whole experience ideal. Adolescents enjoyed the corn hole game, it's in the garage, and the little ones just loved running uninhibited by lack of space or boundaries in the back yard. And picking strawberries in the front garden!!

The sky and the gentle winds on the tall grass made for some amazing photos. We spent at least 50% of our time outside.

We wandered to Joan and Steve's place across the road to say hello to her exotic chickens and little black bunny. Of course the dogs Finn, the Boykin Spaniel, and Oscar, the 13 wk old Newfie, were glad to greet us too.

We didn't feel crowded. If anyone wanted a nap, they could go to one of the bedrooms and rest without disturbance.

I would recommend the house and the gracious owners unconditionally.
