My husband and I are retired and we use the cottage to visit family and friends while in Marietta. I love people and enjoy the outdoors. My husband likes to garden and hunt. He is a retired WV coal miner of 37 years and a Viet Nam war veteran. We currently reside near Morgantown, WV.
Peggy Boring purchased this house in 2014
I fell in love with this house the minute I saw it. It was in need of TLC but was basically a one owner home of a lady who used to walk to work on the 'old' railroad bridge at historic Lafayette Hotel! We have worked very hard to bring beauty back to this home. It has been a labor of love and we love River Rock Cottage and offer it with the confidence that you will love it too!
This home is perfect for history lovers and nature lovers. The Muskingam and Ohio Rivers meet here..a 2 minute walk up the street will bring you fantastic views of this meeting!! Shopping, hiking, bike riding, swimming, antiquing, flea marketing, and dining all right at the front door!!!! A hometown feeling with so much to do!!
We stayed at River Rock Cottage from Dec. 26-30, and we thoroughly enjoyed it! When we arrived, there were Christmas lights on the front porch and inside were 3 cute Christmas trees! I'd read previous reviews that talked about all the food, and they were right! There were Christmas cookies, a basket of breakfast and snack foods, fresh fruit, and the refrigerator was stocked with everything we could possibly need and then some! The beds were very comfortable, although our 21 year old son chose to sleep on the huge couch in the den because at 6'5", the beds were a little too short for him! Peggy left information for everything we might need during our stay, and she responded immediately to my texts. We'd never stayed in an older house like this, so we really enjoyed it. The one and only thing I'd love to have changed is to have a bathroom upstairs too, but we were warned in advance that there was only one and it was downstairs. It wasn't a problem at all, and there were even supplies in the bathroom in case we'd forgotten anything. We had a great time and will definitely stay here again!
This cottage more than exceeded our expectations! Despite blustery weather, the house was warm & cozy for my husband & 17 year old daughter. Loved the fully stocked kitchen. Had plenty of food for lunch & breakfast!! All of the coffee, tea, water bottles, & hot chocolate we could drink. Better wifi service than at our own home too!! If weather had been better, we would have walked more as the cottage is ideally located for walking explorations. (We had periods of heavy rain, sleet, hail, strong winds & even snow.). The cottage was the perfect jumping off point to explore Marietta & visit Marietta College! We will certainly return!!
The house was precisely as advertised. The owner left supplies for breakfast and plenty of bottles of water for our use. The lower level has central A/C and the upstairs bedrooms had window units and the house was comfortable when we arrived in the early evening. The location on the west side of town was close enough to walk to restaurants downtown and on the river.
This was such a nice little place. Convenient to just about everything; shopping, dining, exploring. Peggy has thought of every thing you would need to feel at home. Thanks for allowing us to stay in your home and to get away for the weekend.
Peggy's cottage was just adorable and cozy! She went above and beyond providing everything you need. She left so many snacks and items for breakfast, that the 6 of us couldn't eat all of them. The beds were comfortable. The house has a small fenced in yard complete with picnic table and gas grill. The front porch was a favorite place to be in the evenings. We came to Marietta to boat the river. Besides the first day, it rained the complete time we stayed. However, thanks to the cottage, we really made ourselves familiar with the great shops, restaurants and downtown Marietta. We have been coming to the area for years for the lake and never got to know the charm of the city and of the Harmer Neighborhood were the cottage is located. The house enabled us to have great family time. Can't wait to stay here again!
The cottage is an adorable house with updates, but all of the charm of a historic house. It had all of the amenities I could need (toiletries, extra pillows and blankets, blow dryer, etc) and so many more touches. I could easily have just thrown some clothes in a bag and been set for the weekend. My boyfriend and I were like kids running around the house looking at all of the little touches. The website says it includes items for a continental breakfast so I expected a few muffins or something, but it was stocked with just about everything you could want for breakfast (coffee, water, orange juice, milk, cereal, pop tarts, pastries, cookies, eggs, sausage, bagels) and a few snacks. It is in a great location about a block from the walking bridge over the river that takes you right into downtown Marietta. The shops are right there, the sternwheeler is only about a 20 minute walk, and the park is about 10 minutes. Within a block of the house there are three little restaurants and a few shops (including a little antique shop in a train car). The neighborhood is a bit of a mix of places that are newly remodeled and little worn out, but it felt comfortable. There is a little historical home down the street that you can tour and it has a photo of Marietta from the early 1900's that includes this little cottage. That was very neat. The bed in the main bedroom is a tad more firm than I prefer so next time I may bring my mattress topper from home and the internet was a little spotty at times, but these were minor inconveniences that were very much outweighed by the rest of the experience. I was home from the cottage for a week before I booked it again for another trip and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a little weekend away. The cottage and city were great!
Marietta was the earliest settlement in the NW Territory. There are many museums and historic homes to tour, many within walking distance. Marietta has many annual events, the most well attended being the annual Sternwheelers Festival, which draws sternwheel boats from many states. There is also a large indoor/outdoor flea market that is within walking distance of the cottage. There are also national parks and historic places in nearby Parkersburg, WV. Blennerhassett Island is a wonderful family place to visit and an easy drive and boatroad. There are numerous local fairs and festivals. Information about these can be found on Marietta, OH visitors web site http://mariettaohio.org/index.php
