About Jon Julien

We live and work in Denver, but have spent a lot of time in Grand Lake. We fell in love with the area 20 years ago. After renting cabins every Christmas for the last 12 years, we decided we should buy our own place to share.

Jon Julien purchased this cabin in 2014

Why Jon Julien chose Rocky Mountain National Park

We are mid century design fans and the 'A' frame really appealed to us. We had a lot of fun picking 'rustic modern' pieces to decorate with and use some of the pieces we owned, such as the Herman Miller table. We also like the fact that there is no neighbor to the south and we are at the end of the street with no outlet. It's very peaceful and quiet here. We love the bright southern and eastern exposure that fills the house with light.

What makes this cabin unique

The best thing about our cabin is the location. We have vacationed for years in the area and always visit the Snow Mountain Nordic Center over Christmas vacation. It's an easy drive there, it's family friendly, and there are lots of things to do. There is also a small cross country track right in the neighborhood that we just discovered last year. Grand Lake is a charming mountain town to visit year round. The people are so friendly and helpful. The summer is bustling and the winter is quiet and beautiful.

Great cabin for a weekend in RMNP

  • 5 of 5

My brothers and I had a great time in this cabin, which is perfectly situated between the small town of Grand Lake and the entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park. We spent our days wandering the park and our evenings grilling, hanging out by the fire, and playing games. Would definitely recommend for friend or family getaways. The herd of elk that visited in the mornings and evenings was a bonus, too!

Another Wonderful Stay

  • 5 of 5

This was our second time staying at this comfortable vacation home and it was just as enjoyable as our first stay. The house is clean and we had all the amenities needed to make our stay enjoyable. The three of us had comfortable night's sleep and we enjoyed relaxing in the living area of the house when we weren't out exploring Colorado. While asleep on our first night's stay it snowed, so we awoke to a beautiful scene of snow covered pines with the added touch of the elk walking through them. It was like something from a postcard. We loved watching the herd of elk migrate from somewhere behind the house to the road out in front.

From the house it is just a short drive to the entrance of Rocky Mountain National Park, which makes it convenient for those looking for a place close to the park to stay. Due to the snow we weren't able to go all the way through the RMNP to Estes Park until our last full day there. Once the park service opened up the road it allowed us to enjoy all the snow covered splendor of Rocky Mountain National Park.

The town of Grand Lake is pretty quite in October. We found several nice restaurants to eat breakfast at in town. We had some wonderful meals in Granby and also in Tabernash as well. We also took a scenic drive to Steamboat Springs which was nice. The Aspens in the Steamboat Springs area were still in fall mode with their golden hued leaves.

We decided to return to this lovely vacation home because we had such a wonderful experience on our first visit. The second visit was every bit as enjoyable as the first. I would highly recommend a stay here if you are looking for a place that is comfortable, convenient to RMNP and where you have a great chance of seeing wildlife (elk in October). We look forward to having the good fortune of staying here again someday soon.

Nice views, nice location

  • 4 of 5

Our second time staying at this cabin. Location is very close to entrance to RMNP and within 5 minutes of downtown Grand Lake. We saw Elk walk by the house again this year, that is a great bonus. Just a short walk to a beautiful lake. Very quiet surroundings. Only complaint is that the heat is quite hard to figure out. We turned it way down both nights and it still must have been above 80 degrees in cabin while it was snowing outside. Not the worst problem to have but a minor inconvenience. I highly recommend this cabin.

Owner's Response: Jason, I am not sure why the heat would not turn down. It is electric baseboard and if you rotate the dial counter-clockwise it turns the heat set-point down. If you turn it all the way counter-clockwise until there is a click, then it is off. I had a friend who stayed a couple of weekends ago (an electrician, that I asked to take a look) and he didn't see any issues. Let me know what you did to turn it down and I will try that out next time we are up. I know that some of the degree markings are worn off the T-stat in the kitchen, so maybe that was the problem with knowing which way to turn. Did you have a fire in the wood-stove? It can overheat then, as there is no temperature control on the stove except how much wood is put in and how much air is supplied (the slider on the bottom of the stove, left more air=hotter fire /right less air= cooler fire). Thanks for giving us the heads-up to look into this. Best regards, Jon
