Overview

About the property

High Altitude Country Resort

Tucked away on a mountain at 4100' overlooking Lake Glenville just north of Cashiers N.C. is this recently constructed rustic cabin retreat with spectacular views that can accommodate 10 in comfort and privacy. The Aerie Retreat offers three formal bedrooms, a convertible couch, king or twin daybed, and 3 1/2 baths in a private wooded atmosphere with all contemporary features, utilities and electronics.

Relax in front of the two wood-burning fireplaces in comfortable rustic style but with all of the modern conveniences including DISH TV, DVD, Roku, Netflix/Amazon Prime/Hulu, WiFi internet and telephone landline. Enjoy a full complement of exercise and entertainment equipment including both adult and child sized pool tables and ping pong; air hockey; fussball; rowing machine/weights/bench and TRX straps; outside childrens' playground; 15' covered swim spa (winterized between November and April but available over the winter at extra charge); 14' trampoline;adult and kids paddle boards; kids' kayak; fishing canoe and fishing kayak; fishing equipment; toys and board games; gas and stone grills and much more. Private POA dock on the lake. Numerous trout streams and lake fishing. Rent a pontoon boat at nearby Signal Ridge Marina and we can arrange one or two person tubes. Sand beach just down the road on Pine Creek by the dam. Just 15 minutes to Cashiers; 25 minutes to Highlands and 45 minutes to Brevard and the Blue Ridge Parkway.

This is high elevation Blue Ridge country where the temperature is routinely 15-20 degrees cooler than Atlanta, Greenville and the other lowlands. The air is clean and the neighborhood is uncrowded. Lake Glenville is the highest elevation lake east of the Mississippi, family and water-sport friendly. Photos cannot do justice to the beautiful mountain views. Nearby Cashiers has very good restaurants and shops and a modern Ingles supermarket. If you get Big Box fever, the Franklin Walmart is only 30 minutes down the mountain; if upscale shopping is your bag, the Highlands emporiums are less than half an hour. This is everything a high mountain retreat should be. And more.

The Blue Ridge Aerie Retreat is not a 'business' rental or a mountain party crash pad, but our home in the mountains that we occasionally rent for family reunions or retreats. Accordingly, any inquiries about availability should include some information about the proposed booking party, numbers and ages of guests, purpose of the booking and whether the party has been reviewed on any other travel sites. An Assumption of Risk, Waiver and Indemnity Agreement must be signed with respect to the Swim Spa and the Trampoline. Absolutely no smoking inside the Retreat. Well-behave pets considered. Reasonable advance notice is generally required because of the cleaning and preparation logistics.

About Peter Bassett

Born in Argentina, grew up in Switzerland and Atlanta resident since 1975; retired attorney; single dad of grown and young children; professional mediator of commercial disputes. I split my time between my circa 1900 'shotgun' house here in Atlanta and a cabin in the North Carolina mountains. I enjoy motorcycling and solo traveling almost anywhere - with particular focus on on the old 'Eastern Bloc'; hiking and alternative lodging. I hope to provide the same kind of experience and amenities in the Aerie Retreat that I appreciate when traveling.

Peter Bassett purchased this cabin in 2013

Why Peter Bassett chose Bryson City Area

I spent a long time trying to find a property with the right combination of characteristics for a family retreat including a country peaceful setting, cool summers, dramatic views, proximity to modern conveniences, restaurants, a family and sports friendly lake and suitable connectivity. I built the Aerie Retreat to meet these goals.

What makes this cabin unique

Just because you are out in the country doesn't mean you have to sacrifice modern amenities. But it is still out in the country and you should not expect an urban experience.

Upscale Mountain Escape

  • 5 of 5

My Husband and I stayed at Aerie Retreat the last week of October 2016 for our honeymoon. While spacious for larger groups, we found it to perfect for an upscale, intimate hideaway. Aerie Retreat offers magnificent views even the photos provided cannot capture. The lake below is clean and beautiful, adding to the views. The same magnificent view is seen from the large windows in the living room. We spent much of our time on the screened porch, enjoying warmth from the large gas-starting wood-burning stone fireplace while relaxing and viewing the mountain range. The owner has thoughtfully provided comfortable outdoor seating, often missing from most rental houses we’ve stayed in the past. The lower level of the house also offers a large deck for sunning, views, and of course, the covered area with a 15’ swim spa, which was thoroughly pleasant.

The interior of the house, open in design, has a warm ambiance perfectly reflecting a mountain cabin while simultaneously offering upper-end amenities. Newer, well-kept, well-supplied, clean. The master bath has a large soaking tub with a private view of the trees – an enjoyable way to pamper oneself! The kitchen is spacious for cooking, well-supplied, and includes features one typically does not see in rentals including a wine refrigerator and coffee bean roaster. The house was built by the owner and this contributes to the private home atmosphere which made our stay that much more comfortable and enjoyable.

The house is in a well-cared for private gated area on a mountain, and gave us the seclusion we desired. It’s a lovely drive to the nearby town of Cashiers which had well-equipped grocery stores, markets, restaurants in all price ranges, as well as casual shopping.

As others have mentioned, the owner is the perfect host, initially providing us with information regarding the house, followed by much appreciated recommendations on everything we mentioned in our correspondence – Peter’s personal attention made our honeymoon a wonderful respite and celebration we won’t forget. I would recommend using Peter’s excellent directions – although Verizon and google maps took us on a longer more scenic route which we would have sadly missed otherwise – we did loose cell service a few times and found our way due to my husband’s ‘inner navigation’. Peter’s route was faster and easier.

Not only would we recommend this house in the mountains to families, it’s the perfect honeymoon hideaway or retreat for couples.

Couldn't Find a Perfect Private and Secluded Lodge Better than this!

  • 5 of 5

My family of two adults, two kids and a toddler had our greatest times staying at this lodge. The place was set on a most secluded and private top of a mountain surrounded by lots of trees. It has amazing views of the mountains and the nearby lake. The facilities provided are plentiful and are in amazingly clean and good condition. The hot tub is HUGE and easy to operate! My 9 year old can stand without issues in. The kids enjoyed the outdoor playground, as well as the indoor activities. Me and my wife had a great time enjoying the scenery, the atmosphere and the secluded privacy. We are quite picky when it comes to cleanliness and this place just amazed us in that department, considering its location and size.

The owner is a person who will make sure you have a great stay at the Lodge. On our visit, he was outside the country but still was easily reachable via both phone and email; I am talking about the span of minutes here. He checked in on us during both check-in and check-out, was always detailed and responsive via emails and was extremely prompt when it came to any issues we found during our stay (which were too few and too minor). As a person, he was quite friendly and talkative and overall a great person to deal with.

If we knew the place would be this good, we would have actually planned for a longer stay, as we couldn't cover all the activities suggested by the owner in our four nights stay(and it is some long list!!!). There is plenty to do at the Lodge, nearby and further away. Always felt good to drive back to it after a nice time at other points of interest in the Great Smokey Mountains.

We already have so many great memories at the place and it strengthened our bond as a family and as we left and returned back to our home, everything felt so good we actually ask ourselves if us visiting the place did actually happen or was it a dream. This is no exaggeration as it was that good. If we ever get another chance to visit the place again, we definitely will.

Negatives? I don't know really. Was really hard finding one and I kept asking my wife and kids about stuff they didn't like. Got no answer. As long as you know what you are expecting, you will not find negatives.

All in all, this is a place for those families (or couples?) who enjoy having a home experience but with an amazing layer of seclusion and privacy for the highest amount of intimacy, fun and relaxation achievable.

Loved every minute in this home!

  • 5 of 5

This lovely cabin was the perfect place for our grandchildren and family vacation. The kitchen allowed fresh ground coffee and I enjoyed a quiet cup each morning on the screened porch overlooking the lake. Every detail was thoughtfully appointed and specific instructions helped us to navigate the Internet, hot tub, coffee maker and more. Loved every minute!

Beautiful Cabin Retreat

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 9 (4 adults and 5 children) visited in Feburay and we had a great time. We usually go to a cabin in the Blue Ridge Mountains on the northwest side of Georiga, but we wanted to be closer to the snow this time around and we were very pleased. The cabin is well appointed and spacious and built for comfort. The furnishings, appliances and amenities are all modern and everything worked well. The drive to the cabin was tricky to navigate with snow and ice on the ground, which was partially due to the fact that we did have 4 wheel drive vehicles. However, the alternate route that the owner suggested was much better and easily navigable. The views and vistas from the cabin are exactly what we're hoping for. The owner was very kind and thoughtful and extended every courtesy and assistance he could to help us get to the cabin and enjoy our stay. There were a number fishing spots and hiking trails within 10-15 minutes drive and skiing and snowboarding was only about 20 minutes away. Overall, just a wonderful experience. We will definitely go back very soon!

Very nice stay in this outstanding mountain retreat

  • 5 of 5

Recently spent 4 nights in this wonderful cabin. The cabin has everything you need and is very clean. The views were magnificent, which was our number one priority. While we were not blessed with good weather, our time was spent just relaxing and enjoying the views. We would be remiss if we failed to mention the wonderful experience we had with dealing with the owner of this cabin. Any and all concerns or questions were answered in a timely manner. This property is located up in the mountains so it is in a remote location where cell service is very limited, however, wifi worked very well. The swim spa is a great place to spend a little time admiring the fresh mountain air and the amazing view. Having stayed in numerous mountain cabins over the years, we can honestly say this cabin ranks at the top of our list. We would recommend this property very highly and would certainly consider staying here again ourselves.
