Endre and I are Calgary, Canada based with a love to travel. We discovered Guanajuato in December 2012 and it was love at first sight. The culture, colours, vibrancy and driving throughout the tunnels sealed the deal. Two months later we returned to look for property as and 'exit strategy' and found Carrizo 2. Endre is a project manager and designed the renovation of this four story older building. Translating the drawings into Spanish, he then brought on an exceptional architect from Leon and the two worked tirelessly on this project. Spending about a 1/3 of each month in Guanajuato, together they sourced all the materials purchased locally with the exception of some items brought down from Ikea. You will notice the porcelain tiles from Italy, custom made doors, marble sinks, pillow top beds.
Susan Pataky purchased this apartment in 2013
The pleasure of walking and discovering the callejones (narrow alleyways) gives you an understanding of neighbourhoods connected by plazas full of life and colour. Due to the geography of this small city, many homes are reachable only by dozens of steps. We sought out a home close to the street level so when your taxi dropped you off, it was only a few steps, not a hundred to your front door.
Sitting on rooftop terrace in the evening, the spectacular view of the city in the setting sun is a perfect spot for your bbq'd dinner. Head down to walk to the city centre and enjoy the estudiantinas (singing minstrels), street food vendors and outdoor patios.
We both need to work remotely while away therefore each floor has individual high speed wifi. The water is heated via solar panels and all lighting is LED. Sky TV offers over a hundred channels. The highlight is the Terrace. With a rooftop garden, two dining areas and lounge seating, this is the perfect spot to relax after your day of exploring. A rooftop washroom saves a trip back to your apartment and if you need, there is a washing machine with lines to dry your clothes.
Great experience. The house accommodated 7 people without a problem. Owners were very welcoming,
Three of us 70+ ladies stayed in the Rumba suite at Casa Terraza. The apartment was clean, and well-maintained. Copelia was able to answer our questions about the area, etc. There was a booklet provides that had a wealth of information about the area, with good tips on how much to pay for the bus, taxis, etc.
We were only a few blocks from the real center of Guanajuato, and for only 40 pesos (less than $2.50 dl at the current exchange rate), we took the taxi a lot of places. For anyone with difficulty walking any distance, the taxi is a God-send. There are stairs to negotiate - first from the street up to the main door, and then up to the actual apartment. The roof top patio was lovely. Well appointed, with a great view. The tacos at a little stand across the street at the Glorieta were delicious, as was the birria at the stand directly in front (on the weekend) We would highly recommend this facility, and if we return to Guanajuato, would rent it again. In fact, we would love to come and stay the a month, if possible, in the future. Found a lovely little cafe Los Campos in the Plaza Baratillo. Actually within walking distance - a few blocks. So many things to see within walking distance, but too many to list here.
5 of us shared this 3 bedroom apartment in February. We took a taxi from the bus station and found the apartment immediately across the roundabout. It is only 15 steps up to the building but depending on your physical condition be warned that this apartment is up 3 more flights of stairs and then the terrace up another. The shared living space was very large and comfortable. Please notice that the 3rd bedroom has to be entered into in order to go into either of the other two bedrooms so this space might be better for two couples. There was a slight sewer smell in the bedroom without a window and the bathroom floor was usually wet after a shower because the water did not stay in the shower area. Some nights were noisy, it seemed to depend on what was going on in the bar that is located at the bottom of the outside stairs. Housekeeping could have been a little better. It is about a 15 minute walk to Centro through a busy part of Avenue Juarez but if you turn left and go up the hill a bit there is a nice wide not crowded street that takes you most of the way into town. Susan was very helpful with questions and recommendations. Taxis were easy to get. The terrace was very comfortable with a great view. The beds were also very comfortable. We enjoyed showing Guanajuato to our friends.
We and our two young adult children loved the city of Guanajuato. The public art in the city was truly impressive. We were close to the center of things in this apartment. We loved all the light and the beautiful view we had from the 4th floor. The furniture was comfortable--something we haven't always found in a rental. We had everything we needed and appreciated the bottled water. The rooftop terrace was a big plus and a great place to relax. The owners are very pleasant and helpful.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay of 11 days at Casa Terraza. The apartment itself was the perfect size for our family of four and it had all the creature comforts we needed to relax after a long day of sightseeing. It's obvious that the owners have a great deal of pride in their property and it shows. We particularly liked hanging out on the rooftop terraza - the outdoor sofas and chairs were very comfortable and inviting and, coupled the amazing view and a glass of wine, it couldn't get much better! Having a housekeeper come every other day was also a welcome addition as we could come home and the apartment felt like new.
The location of Casa Terraza is a bit outside of the main historical center (maybe a 10 minute walk), but we liked being away from the crush of tourists at the end of the day and enjoyed getting to know the local businesses between our apartment and the centro. In addition, the Comercial Mexicana supermarket was very close to us, which made it really easy to go buy any food items we needed while there. Additionally, the Mummy Museum is just a short walk from Casa Terraza and it is very easy to get a taxi to the bus station if you choose to visit any of the surrounding towns, whereas it can be a bit more complicated to do this if you are staying in the very center of town.
If you're gastronomically adventurous (which you really should be in order to fully experience Mexico), there is a wonderful street taco vendor who sets up across the street from the Casa Terraza in the evenings called "Fredy's Tacos". We made it a nearly daily pilgrimage to get at least a couple of tacos each evening and they were very, very good.
All in all, I would rate the property itself 5 Stars PLUS. The only reason I gave an overall rating of four stars is because we found that the cantina in the bottom floor of the building that Casa Terraza adjoins played fairly loud music most nights well into the night. I tend to be a light sleeper, so this may not be a big deal for you if you are a deep sleeper, but for me it did cause some lost sleep - even with my earplugs in. Granted, the owners of Casa Terraza can't be blamed for the goings-on at the cantina, but I do feel obligated to mention this so that it doesn't come as a surprise to any renters.
We love Casa Terraza!
Awesome house facilities and very positive and responsive owner making a painless process.
The location is great to walk to Downtown (Centro) you're always looking at something or to the mommies museum.
Wi-Fi, Laundry, Terraza very nice and works all the time.
Thank you very much for letting us use your property.
