Endre and I are Calgary Canada based with a love to travel. We discovered Guanajuato in December 2012 and it was love at first sight. The culture, colours, vibrancy and driving throughout the tunnels sealed the deal. Two months later we returned to look for property as an 'exit strategy' and found Carrizo 2. Endre is a project manager and designed the renovation of this four story older building. Translating the drawings into Spanish, he then brought on an exceptional architect from Leon and the two worked tirelessly on this project. Spending about ⅓ of each month in Guanajuato, together they sourced all the materials purchased locally with the exception of some items brought down from Ikea.
You will notice the porcelain tiles from Italy, custom made doors, marble sinks, pillow top beds.
Susan Pataky purchased this apartment in 2013
The pleasure of walking and discovering the callejones (narrow alleyways) gives one an understanding of neighbourhoods connected by plazas full of life and colour. Due to the geography of this small city, many homes are reachable only by dozens of steps. We sought out a home close to the street level so when your taxi dropped you off, it was only a few steps, not a hundred to your front door.
Sitting on the rooftop terrace in the evening, the spectacular view of the city in the setting sun is a perfect spot for your bbq'd dinner. Head down to walk to the city centre and enjoy the estudiantinas (singing minstrels), street food vendors and outdoor patins.
We both need to work remotely while away therefore each floor has individual high speed wifi. The water is heated via solar panels and all lighting is LED. Sky TV offers over a hundred channels. The highlight is the Terrace. With a rooftop garden, two dining areas and lounge seating, this is the perfect spot to relax after your day of exploring. A rooftop washroom saves a trip back to your apartment and if you need, there is a washing machine with lines to dry your clothes.
The booking process went very smoothly with the owner.
When we arrived at the apartment, we went through a bit of a culture shock and wondered if we had made the right rental choice. We called Susan and she was very good and explained that the neighbourhood was very safe. We took her word for it and were glad. Within hours we were comfortable in the area and appreciated the true cultural experience.
The apartment is just the way you see in the pictures. Very clean, comfortable and modern. Soap, shampoo, conditioner and drinking water is supplied - wow!
The highlight was the rooftop patio - Susan has done a wonderful job and the views of the city are spectacular from here. We spent many hours here.
What you need to know - apartment is located above a bar, so music can be an issue for some - did not bother us. Also if you rent the lower apartments - rumba and tango, your view is a wall or other rooftops. Try and rent the higher apartments if you want the city view. 10 minutes walk to the Mega store and 20 minutes walk to Centro to see all the sites.
My daughter said - "how do you find these wonderful apartments mom" - high praise from a teenage.
We were 2 couples staying in the apartment. It was very comfortable and pleasant. The roof top terrace has comfortable seating and wonderful views of the city. It added so much to our enjoyment of the place.
I love the location, an easy 15 minute walk to the Centro Historico and in a real neighborhood. The owner was there and was most gracious and helpful. She has a book about the town with great restaurant recommendations, very important to us.
Be sure to get good directions about finding the place. It's in a little alley way off the main street and was hard to find. You have to walk up a steep stairway to get in the main door and then there are stairs to reach the apartment. There's no one to help with your suitcases so you need to be able to handle them yourself.
This is a beautiful property, good location, just about 15 minutes from the center of town (walking). It has everything you may wish for, very new and beautifully renovated. A few stairs, but if you go to Guanajuato, you are expected to walk up and down all the time. The terrace is beautiful, with exceptional views of the city. The owners were there and they are outstanding people. I recommend this property to anybody going to Guanajuato. We had a great experience.
We really enjoyed our stay at Susan's apartment. The apartment was very comfortable with all the conveniences of home. The communal rooftop deck had a wonderful view of Guanajuato and we spent a lot of time there. The city itself is a great place to wonder around through squares and cobbled stairways. The view above town from Pipilia is amazing. On another note we accidentally left a credit card in the apartment and were contacted by Susan and her site manager after the maid found it. We appreciated that level of integrity. Certainly a place we would look forward to returning again.
Casa Terraza, although it had many nice apartment features, was not ideal for my family. The Tango apartment layout itself was great, with two-bedrooms, a decent kitchen with new appliances, and a small living room area. The apartment is clean, comfortable, and well-decorated.
Finding the location proved difficult. Google the apartment name "Casa Terraza" and not the address provided in the information packet. The person I spoke to over the phone for further orientation was extremely friendly and helpful. There is no dedicated parking. We had to squeeze into a spot on the street up the hill and not close to the apartment. There is no available parking nearby that would be conducive for unloading a car (maybe most visitors do not bring a car anyway).
To say the neighborhood is working-class would be polite. Many of the loitering locals appear to be the products of the US prison system, or at least their teardrop tattoos do. At the entrance to the alley where the apartment lies is a small, rough-looking bar. We had no problems with the local barflies, but I wasn't exactly comfortable passing the intoxicated and high patrons with my wife and young kids as we were coming and going throughout the day.
I am not sure there is a bad panoramic view of Guanajuato and the terrace of Casa Terraza certainly owns one. The terrace is very nice and gives you an incredible 360-panoramic of the city. From the photos, I had the impression the terrace was right off one of the rooms in the apartment. It is actually up three flights of steep stairs. Not a deal-breaker, but it should be better described.
Hot water is a premium at Casa Terraza. Expect to take very short showers that start with an initial scalding and then convert over to a freeze. There is actually a fun game you can play with the hot and cold water controls to try and prolong a comfortable shower, but you will eventually lose that game.
Nights are anything but quiet and peaceful. Loud music blared into early Tuesday morning, and a live band was going strong on the accordion until about 5am on Wednesday. The band might as well have been encircling our bed (I actually wrote this when I couldn't sleep).
Again, the circumstances were not ideal for a family with young kids looking for a quiet stay in a new city. Perhaps if you are car-free, enjoy drinking with the locals, prefer short showers, and are a heavy sleeper, Casa Terraza would be perfect option to see the beautiful city of Guanajuato.
