Interaction with Guests
Minimal. Our property maintenance crew may stop in to take care of the yard. Otherwise, we (us and our on-island crew) are available in case of emergencies.
We are always available if you have any questions, or if you would like recommendations on anything.
A short distance from Hilo, far enough to get away from the distractions of the city. It's an excellent opportunity to immerse yourself in the Hawaiian lifestyle, while still being minutes away from modern conveniences.
Our property is roughly 1.2 miles from the ocean, there are some beautiful tide pools and cliffs nearby.
The neighborhood shares the land with the jungle. You will see geckos, lizards, frogs; and you'll hear even more. Pictures truly cannot do the land justice.
We recommend a car for getting around. There is a bus stop roughly one mile from the home.
While you do not need a 4-wheel drive vehicle for our property, they do come in handy on the island in general. We have a company that we use for car rentals for a great deal, contact us if you would like the information.
Other Things to Note:
The home is on a water catchment system. This means we collect and store rain water for later usage, hence the water conservation notes. The water is perfectly safe for bathing and washing of dishes. For drinking water we provide two 3-gallon jugs of water. They can be filled for free at Keaau water spigot.
The house also uses propane gas for the water heater and stove. In the event that tank runs out, please let us know. We keep two tanks hooked up and can walk you through flipping to the other tank.
Please understand we live in the jungle. There is a wide variety of small wildlife active at all sorts of hours. At night, the jungle comes alive with noise. The geckos we mentioned in the pictures occasionally make their way into the house; don't fret, they know the way back out.

I'm from Tucson, Arizona, and enjoy traveling as much as possible. I work for a national medical certifying board and travel regularly for work. I do my best to insert travel opportunities with family and friends as well.
Aaron Gudenkauf purchased this house in 2014
After searching for opportunities for over 6 months, this one property came to the foreground for us. The land is gorgeous and it truly feels like a home. While incorporating the Aloha/Hawaiian lifestyle, we have modern amenities with electricity, running water (catchment), and wifi internet.
Make a cup of coffee and watch the sun rise from the front of our acre. The flowers will light up and it's a wonderful way to start the day. At night, you can hear the waves crashing into the cliffs nearby.
Our home is set up to accommodate an Ohana. Your family. Whatever that means to you. Family, friends, multiple families, etc.
Aaron's directions were wonderful! The home is located in a rural, exotic, serene setting. The neighborhood is wonderfully secluded and felt very safe. We arrived after dark and had no problem finding it. Aaron was extremely helpful and readily accessible. We loved the sounds and sights of nature around us . We had attended a funeral in busy Honolulu and being in this quiet location was therapeutic for us. So much outside space and privacy. It was a great base for exploring the island, yet always so appealing to return to. This is true Hawaii! We had a very memorable 5 days!
Once we found the place, which was a little difficult in the dark because nothing was lit up, address, no street lighting, etc (not the owners fault) we were thrilled with the home. Everything we needed was there and we were very comfortable. It is about a 20 min drive to Hilo which was great for us, because it was also closer to VNP. Didn't get a chance to get out to the coast on that side. Aaron provided a great write up about the place, operating everything, where to find things, even recommendations for locals eats and places to visit, which was a nice touch. The grounds are beautiful and very peaceful. Would definitely recommend it!
Aaron was very quick to answer my questions online prior to our stay. We were allowed an early check in since we had the first flight from Honolulu and upon arrival I was pretty amazed. The property is in a nice location and took me back to my childhood (born and raised in hawaii). The 'ohana house was nice and well stocked. Once we opened the hobby house almost everyone in our party wanted to sleep there instead, it gave the younger adults and children a slumber party like atmosphere and the bottom of the hobby house was the hangout area during our stay.
If you are looking for a break from the city life this is definitely the place for you.
Aaron, the owner, and Tray, the house keeper, were exceptionally helpful with answering all of our questions and making sure we were well cared for. We used the Ohana Haven for our wedding and it went better than imagined. The description of the property and the pictures were exactly as it said. Tray and her crew take very good care of the place. I would definitely recommend this beautiful home and can't wait to stay there again!
Ohana Haven was a great location for our family to stay at to visit both Volcano and Hilo. For our larger group, it worked well to have the separate Hobby House for our children to stay in that gave them space, but was close to the main house. Outdoor space also was nice for outdoor activities. Ohana Haven was clean and well maintained. The owner was very prompt to answer any questions or concerns.
