Don and Joy moved to Maui in 1981 to raise their family. We bought an acre of land in Kihei with an original plantation house. Over the years we have subdivided the property, added a cottage and another house, but left the original house as authentic as we could.
Don is a licensed general contractor and Joy is a licensed travel agent.
Our children are married and have their own families and have moved elsewhere, so we open up our property to vacationers who want to enjoy the Maui we know and love, and especially enjoy the Plantation House. There are not alot of them left on the island.
We live on property and will be available to help you in your visit to Maui.
Our grandson, Kingston is 4 year old and Kylee is 1. Our granddaughter Ivy is 3 and lives next door to us.
Joy Gerry purchased this house in 1985
In 2000 we decided to convert the Plantation House into a vacation rental. We wanted vacationers to be able to experience the type of houses that people built and lived in when Maui was a quiet, undeveloped piece of paradise. We replaced all the windows in 2011 and put in new bamboo flooring and carpet. The kitchen got a new countertop and breakfast nook. There is a large lanai on the property so you can sit out in the evenings and enjoy the cool evenings, have a barbecue and talk story. We recently added a 2 bedroom cottage next door to this house, so it is perfect for large families traveling together. Along with the studio and the additional 2 bedroom on an adjacent property we have plenty of room for multi families.
Our property is not a condominium complex. It is not a typical mainland style residential property. It is a typical property from the 50's and 60's and 70's. There are lots of large tropical trees and tropical plants throughout the acre of land. There are fragrant plumeria trees, banana trees, and red hibiscus plants. There is 7 acres of an undeveloped grove of trees that line the whole length of the property which gives the property the feel of being away from it all when in reality we are 1 block from the beach and 2 blocks from the shops. We get lots of repeat visitors and families of local people as well as families of former visitors.
Note Left For Owners-Don and Joy. What a Great Find! Thanks for 2 excellent nights. We will be sending lots of San Diegans your way, if not back ourselves. Mahalo, Drew and Kristen
We brought our daughter and 2 young grand kids to stay and the place was perfect. has 3 bedrooms and a large living room for the kids to play. Washer & dryer but I used the clothesline nearby and that was even better. One thing I really appreciated was the fact that Don and Joy were very personable and ready to correct whatever needed doing. I love that they recycle a lot because that is very important to me. Their place is very close to stores and restaurants. They are close to many great beaches. FYI. The bus service in Maui is not great. The local bus runs once an hour. You are better off just renting a car for your holiday.
All in all, a wonderful place to be in Maui!!

We Loved It!!! Quaint cottage with themed bedrooms: Hula Girl Room, Pineapple Room, & Surfboard Room. Centrally located with shopping and restaurants nearby. Kihei Kalama Village (marketplace) was just a short drive away. Beach within walking distance. Stocked with everything you need and then some! Our family enjoyed our stay at the Hale Mahalo and have already shared this special location with friends and family. Will be visiting again! Thank you Joy & Don for a wonderful stay.
House was a great home-away-from-home while exploring Maui. Very relaxed and private accommodations - not packed in with tonnes of other tourists. We were three women and three babies/kids and felt safe and comfortable. The owners were very friendly and helpful. The house was exactly as described and pictured - no disappointment upon arrival. We would definitely return to this property if returning to Maui. Around the corner is a great little park to watch the sunset.
My extended family stayed in Joy and Don's rentals, the studio and the 2 BRM, in September 2012. The homes were clean and well-stocked with everything we could want, from snorkel gear to DVDs to a tandem kayak. We loved how centrally located our rental was. Joy and Don -the owners- were warm and helpful. If we had questions about what to do and where to go, Joy and Don were there to help, like personal tour guides. They even came to our rescue when we had problems with our rental car. If you want to feel like you're staying with family while on Maui, I highly recommend it.
We had a wonderful and relaxing month with Don and Joy. We found everything in the home to be clean and comfortable. Staying in a home was so much better than a hotel or condo. All the extras like beach chairs, boogie boards etc. were just great! Tips on beaches, snorkeling, scenic drives and any other questions, were just some of the things Don and Joy helped with. We would recommend this property to anyone who is staying in Kihei. All the beaches were beautiful! Makena (Big Beach) was our favorite. We would also recommend the Luau at the Marriott Wailea, it was perfect from the pre dinner activities to the end of the show. Food and drinks were wonderful, and even fire dancers! Only 15 minutes from the house too!! Mahalo to Don and Joy for making us feel like ohana.
We recently had the pleasure of staying in the 3 bedroom plantation house for 2 weeks. We had a fabulous experience, the house is very clean with nice attention to detail. The owners of the property, Joy and Don were fantastic with the kids and very helpful with suggestions on where to go with our group of 3 adults and 4 kids. I am already planning a trip back and will put this nice little house first on the list. We felt very safe on the property, lucky to have lots of space for the kids to run around, a fabulous deck, close to the action but not in the busiest part of the Kihei strip. It was perfect. Thank you so much Joy and Don, we'll be back, A hui hou kakou!
Beach, tide pools, turtles, Grocery, restaurants, shops within walking distance, post office, whale museum.
