Our 8 acres property is located within a 190 acres farm limited north & west by the Mechum River and its flood lands; just like a "private moat" that separates us from 250 West traffic noise. Again the SATELLITE view in Google map shows the country setting and the convenient access to two main highways, I-64 & Rt 250, leading to the Skyline Drive or to the Charlottesville destinations
Our site is a habitat for birds, other animals and for the people who love them. And when you have your fill, you may drive a short distance, to your favorite city entertainment or pick up food and wine and dine at home, in the woods, listening to the birds and tree frogs or watching the firebugs jumping at dusk
Said a guest, Su Casa, "At home in the woods"
I am a retired neurologist from academic UVA and private practice in Charlottesville Va. Married to Nancy with three married children and five grandchildren. My profile, photos and wife Nancy's photos are best displayed in my own web site where I am the designer of a new walking aid for the medically handicap as well as the healthy hiker. I named the website the Neurostaff. My practice is now limited to counseling friends regarding neurological conditions but I am considering to offer electronic second opinions in neurology. My wife Nancy is a painter, she loves the Virginia landscape and you will see some of her works hanging in the cottage. We are proud of our two daughters and one son, all married now with children of their own. five beautiful grandchildren
Justo Campa OR Nancy Campa purchased this cottage in 1985
My wife and I were very fortunate when, in 1975, as our children were 5,7 and 9 years old, the late Dr Edward Jordan, owner of the 190 acres Buck Elbow Farm, welcomed us to buy 8 acres of it to build our dream family home. We designed our home with the help of our friend and architect, the late Jay Dalgliesh, who over 39 years continued designing our expansions, most importantly in 1988 with a new garage and Carriage House, a guest cottage which we named 'Su Casa' and is now, for the first time, offered as a travel destination featured in HomeAway.
Working the land around us was just as joyful as the house expansions and improvements. We started with 8 acres of thick forest, now we have gardens "inside" that forest, and a separate swimming pool area surrounded by gardens inspired by those of the Alhambra in my native Spain."The gardens of my delights". The gardener is really my wife Nancy , past president of the Garden Club of Charlottesville who can name every plant by their name, even in Latin, and her assistant gardener Harold, our loyal help for 25 years. My job has been with the pruning and occasional clearing of trees to open our mountain views like green canyons to the north Blue Ridge and to the west central pasture My gardens were veggie ones motivated first by the nostalgic idea of making Spanish gazpacho, requiring tomatoes, cucumbers and green peppers. Now with the help of my son Justi, another veggie aficionado, we have 3 large high rise beds in the open sun near the pasture. All with water irrigation and fenced against deer and squirrels. Our blue birds nest near by and have a feast with the gardens' insects.
Jay Dalgliesh loved our/his place and use to call it, 'Our oasis in IVY'; we cannot figure a name for it, for it will have to convey the ideas of gardens, forest,
solitude, nature, peace, quiet pleasure and family home, all different thru the four seasons.
Yes,we are happy to share it with you while planning to keep it for our children
Unique central location to scenic or historic destinations and private pool privileges. When you are in Su Casa you will have the choice of staying home enjoying nature and solitude with Crozet Pizza or Greenwood Gourmet foods or you can easily reach your choice destination - whether touring 10 nearby wineries, hike/ ride the Skyline Drive or visiting our historical sites, and come back to Su Casa with a take out gourmet dinner. Su Casa is central to all. We are 4 miles to all services in charming Crozet, 11 miles to historical Charlottesville and UVA CAMPUS, 13 miles to the hikes in Shenandoah Parkway, 15 miles from Monticello, and 23 miles or 30 minutes away from the popular Wintergreen Ski Resort. Ten wineries are within 10 miles radius. As for dinning, excellent food is available either as a take out or sitting in two good restaurants within 4 miles and good wines and a Liquor Store also in close vicinity All our reviewers have praised this unique location and the comfort to return home after a day of exploring the tourist attractions. As a recent guest pointed out, in Su Casa will be "At Home in the Woods'
We stayed in this special spot for two weeks while my wife recovered from major surgery at the UVA Medical Center. Su Casa was very quiet, peaceful, and surrounded by a beautiful fall canopy of red and gold leaves. Sheree found it to be a healing spot. This small carriage house is separated from the main house and has a private deck that faces the forest. We enjoyed walking on the private road and sitting in the sun on the porch swings adjacent to their lovely garden. We also enjoyed their black Lab and the neighbor's Australian Shepherd that kept us company. The house itself is small but efficiently laid out and tastefully decorated. Justo and Nancy are available and attentive but not intrusive--excellent hosts! We particularly enjoyed exploring Crozet and the wealth of wineries in the area. We highly recommend Su Casa for a short or long stay and hope to return ourselves.
My wife and I stayed over the Labor Day weekend with our 15-month old daughter. We were very pleased with our stay and would happily go back. The house has a living/dining/kitchen area downstairs and one large bedroom upstairs. The single bathroom is off the living area. A sofa bed can be used to create additional sleeping space in the living area. There was plenty of room in the bedroom for us to set up our daughter's travel cot. Overall, the house was spacious and comfortable for the three of us. The air conditioning unit in the bedroom was a little noisy and some windows do not have coverings, but neither of these issues bothered us much. We found the house to be a pleasant temperature (outside temperatures were in the 70s and 80s).
The gardens and pool were beautiful, as was the surrounding forest. We swam in the pool on two days and enjoyed it very much, even though the water had started to cool. The pool and garden are a short walk from the cottage past the owners' house, but felt very private. There are nice balconies by the pool and outside the cottage.
Justo was a perfect host. He gave us guidance and advice in advance of our arrival. He met us on arrival and showed us around. He helped us with information about the local area, including restaurants. The kitchen was stocked with coffee, some food, and a bottle of wine, which made settling in easy.
The property is just a couple of miles from Crozet, which has restaurants and grocery stores (gourmet and Harris Teeter) and is about 10 miles from Charlottesville, also close to Skyline Drive in the other direction.
Overall, a good relaxing stay and we would be happy to return.
Had a wonderful time relaxing Su Casa! Justo and Nancy were gracious hosts and even provided some fresh tomatoes from their garden upon arrival! It was wonderful to be surrounded by so much nature - pictures don't really capture it! Only about a 10 minute drive to Charlottesville, and near dozens of wineries. Was a perfect get-away from the hubbub of Washington D.C.
My wife and I spent 4 wonderful days at this property following our wedding in July. Everything about this place was perfect in every way. Justo and Nancy made us feel at home from the moment we arrived and provided so many little touches that made the stay even more incredible. The place is located right outside of Charlottesville so the access into town is very easy, plus you are only 5 minutes from the town of Crozet which houses multiple breweries, wineries and restaurants. Justo and Nancy went above and beyond and stocked the house with some staples (eggs, cheese, coffee, etc) which was wonderful when waking up already having food for breakfast. Aside from the food, the place is beautifully decorated, but more importantly it was full of fresh flowers from the property! The house was perfect for relaxing as it's very quiet and nestled in the woods so it was great for reading books or curling up on the couch to watch a movie. The property also has a large in-ground pool which was so refreshing on a hot July day. We unfortunately had rain a few days, but did spend one whole day laying by the pool without any worries or distractions. We did however get to spend some time by the pool playing with our friend Blue who was a welcomed guest while we relaxed by the pool.
Overall I can't say enough about how perfect this place is and how wonderful of an experience that we had. Thank you so much Justo and Nancy for making our stay so special and for the beautiful weekend escape.

We felt we were misled regarding this property. We had no idea the carriage house was right next to the Owner's home. The pictures of the home made it look like the pool was right behind the Carriage house. It was not, you had to walk behind the Carriage house, along the Owner's house, behind the Owner's house to the pool. We were led to believe this would be a private home, secluded, and it was not. The wall air conditioning unit located on the second floor by the bed, was loud and made it hard to get a good night's rest. The smoke alarm batteries were dying causing a beeping sound, the Owner came over to investigate, removed the batteries and left the cover on the counter, never replaced them during our stay. We found the outdoor gas grill not heating up properly, advised Owner. He checked it, said it was new and was working fine. He called my husband and wanted to argue the fact it worked and my husband did not know how to use an outdoor grill. Again, we felt misled about this home and frankly found the Owners to be odd and were disappointed overall and spent a lot of money on the rental. Will not rent this home again but will visit Charlottesville.
We had a wonderful stay at Su Casa. Beautiful cottage, amazing pool and gorgeous property. The Campa family was welcoming and the cottage was stocked upon arrival. Perfect location for exploring both Crozet and Charlottesville. The only complaint is the lack of air conditioning in the downstairs area. It was extremely warm during our stay and the upstairs is cooled by a window type unit with no problem. The downstairs was extremely warm, especially in the heat of the day. Something to be aware of, especially in the heat of summer. Everything else about this cottage is perfect!
Private, quiet country location (see SATELLITE VIEW in Google Map), yet only 4 miles from Crozet, 12 miles from Charlottesville &UVA Campus, 15 from Hiking at Shenandoah Nat Park. In the mist of 10 + wineries, wedding and festivals destinations but also at fast I-64 or 250 W connections to the UVA CAMPUS and Football Stadium, and to all historical and scenic sites from Charlottesville to the Blue Ridge Mountains .
The house site has ample outdoor spaces fro recreation and contemplation. The town of Crozet has all necessary services, including a 24/7 Harris Teeter, across an ABC Liquor. Te Greewood Gourmet Market supplies high quality food and wines to take home or you can dine at two excellent family restaurants and the famous pick up Crozet Pizza. At home, you will have outdoor/indoors dining areas and full kitchen and grill to cook your own. The enjoy a new 40' TV with Netflix Internet streaming and 250 Channels Dish-Network. Or your phone music song in a Bose Bluetooth mini Speaker. The satellite Google view displays our location in the best Virginia country yet in close contact to 250 W and I-64 for fast connection to all scenic and historic destinations.
Our guest have come for the fall foliage, spring gardens, skiing in Wintergreen, cooing off in the summer, hiking the Shenandoah, UVA graduations, golf courses, weddings, sporting events and for the many historical sites with three presidents Homes. Our cottage 'Su Casa' is at the center of all and any of these attractions.
Living in such a historical and nature rich location makes it impossible to detail all the offerings of this place but we have lived in this home and area for 39 years and it is our pleasure to help you plan the best choices for whatever destination or goal you wish to fulfill during your stay.
