The Hideaway is a fabulous Mendocino Coast Vacation rental. You can feel the rest of the world almost slip away as you enter this enchanted place. Here you will find our house and property situated on the ridge above the ocean. In this very private location you feel as if time has paused in a different era, one where life is simple, where kids run free to explore the forest without worry, where there is no traffic, no noise, you feel transformed.
Our house just outside of Gualala (pronounced wa-la-la) is located about 30 miles south of Mendocino, and about six miles north of the famous Sea Ranch, a coastal development renowned for its architectural respect for the environment. Which means you have easy access to the arts, entertainment and shopping to be found in Gualala. The presence of Sea Ranch and many vacation homes allow wonderful shopping and arts to thrive in this small community. Nearby there are wineries, galleries, restaurants, wonderful beaches, kayaking, hiking, lighthouses, (See our What To Do section). Though even with all this to do, we often find it hard to tear ourselves away from our hideaway on the hill.
Our home is surrounded by gardens and redwood trees. We are close enough to the ocean to hear the sea lions barking in the distance. The kitchen is spacious with a large table for the whole family to enjoy meals together and in the winter warmed by a woodstove. The kitchen is fully equipped with pots/dishes/utensils/dishwasher, just bring your food!
The open floor plan includes the kitchen, living room and sun room. Beautifully decorated, the living room features a hide-a-bed couch, flagstone fireplace and TV, with satellite, TV, DVD, VCR and Bose. Directly connected is the large sunroom, with an open ceiling and panoramic windows to the gardens and horizon view. This bright room is an irresistible space to spend the morning with a cup of coffee or tea, wondering how this place makes time stand still.
The master bedroom is also bright with a wonderful king sized bed. A large sliding door opens on to a private deck that leads to the hot tub. The second bedroom is large with two double beds. The bathroom has a beautiful flagstone floor, shower and deep Japanese soaking tub with view out to the gardens. The best part of the bathroom however is the door that leads directly to the back deck and the outdoor shower, where you can look up at the redwoods while you shower.
The house is 1400 square feet, and sleeps 6 (8 with the hide-a-bed). We are the last house on a gravel road that leads up the Hill and are situated on about 3 acres which includes beautiful perennial gardens, redwood forest and a large sunny yard. We are bordered by several large 100+ acre parcels of forest. The location, about a mile up a gravel road from the coast/beach, means that we often sit above the morning coastal fog, enjoying sunshine while the coast is still shrouded.
A few minutes drive from the bottom of our road lies Cook’s Beach. We call it private beach but a few years ago the California Coastal Commission built a beautiful path and steps and we learned it had an official name. Now the access is easy to this beautiful cove with about 150 yards of sandy beach. North up the road a mile lies the beach at Fish Rock, a larger nice sandy beach. Here the Anchor Bay campground also provides a place to launch small boats for fisherman and abalone divers.

We are a family of 5 that loves to ski, bike , hike and run. We love art and nature and forests and gardens.
Owner/Manager purchased this house in 2002
This part of the coast is spectacular, with just the right mix of culture vs solitude for us. They call this the Banana belt because of the warm temperatures often felt here. Often warmer and sunnier than the bay area. By sitting at the top of the Hill we avoid most coastal fog and enjoy warm temps.
The property is unique because of its solitude at the end of the road, the space to play explore and hike, the beautiful redwoods and the horizon view.
We had such a lovely stay at the Hideaway! It was very quiet and private, but easy access into Gualala and to the beaches. We enjoyed the big living room + kitchen, the great yard + garden, and we loved the outdoor shower! My husband loved the fireplace and we were grateful that wood was supplied so we didn't have to worry about bringing in anything. We had a hard time getting the hot tub to turn on, and wish there had been more specific instructions so we could have had it working sooner. But really, no complaints! A lovely place.
It was quite a drive for us to reach this little beauty, and once we turned off Hwy 1, it was an enchanting journey through a tunnel of lush green to reach this home. The owners are definitely not over exaggerating when they term it a "hideaway". You have almost complete privacy, tucked away in gardens that will most likely be spectacularly colorful and beautiful in a week or two, if not already. We stayed for three nights in early March and it happened to be dismal weather-wise (hail and even a touch of snow on our last night), but the home was so comfortable and welcoming that we enjoyed our time indoors. It was quite cold, and we were unable to figure out how to get the heaters to get warm enough, but there was plenty of firewood and we absolutely loved gathering around the fireplace to play games, read and just enjoy spending time with each other. The house is very attractive, not fancy or luxurious, but cozy and livable with small, charming touches that made me smile when they caught my eye. Many things about the home made me think that I would really like the owners as people. It was clean and perfectly equipped with everything we needed to cook our meals. My son kept remarking, "Yeah - I could live here.". The house felt that welcoming. As I mentioned, the grounds are stunning and spacious, and the kids enjoyed exploring and examining every little bit of flora and fauna (banana slugs!) We all enjoyed the hot tub, which was immaculately clean.(one small detail - we didn't see any steps to get into the hot tub, but we sure managed to spend a lot of time in it!) When the sun popped out now and then, we had a glimpse of blue ocean through the trees from the cheerful sun room. The bed in the master bedroom is quite low, and my knees creaked now and then, but it and the linens were snuggly and just right for chilly coastal evenings. There are many things I loved and genuinely appreciated about this home, but I have to say the dining table was my favorite. I would give my eye teeth for that table! Truly unique. We had minimal contact with Elizabeth simply because everything was just as it should be. What interaction i did have with her was fast, pleasant, informative, and made me feel that we had chosen wisely. This was our first VRBO experience, and it was delightful, from start to finish. We recommend this home, and will return again.
My family & I really enjoyed the Highway house and the lovely garden but it is very difficult to find it especially after the sunset. There have a problem with the TV, the satellite dish can catch only few channels. They do not have wifi, the public one that was provided is very weak, so you can check your emails. The girl from the restaurant told us only Verison subscribers have reception.
Overall the plase is a great for short stay and escape from busy schedule, we enjoyed the scenic views and two excellent nights out at local restaurants.
Spent a perfectly sunny Christmas weekend at the Hideaway. The house is so comfortable and the surrounding grounds and use of a spa made the total experience so great. We felt lucky to have found it.

This was our 3rd annual stay at the hideaway. We have made this a family tradition to go every year. This year we introduced our second son to our family tradition. Great stay as usual. Beautiful and perfect for the kiddos to explore the property and always nice to soak in the hot tub. Already looking forward to our stay next fall/winter:)
Beautiful surroundings and lovely indoor decor. Had some water issues and Liz got a plumber to come right away. Best to check-in during the day as the lovely serene hideaway can be hard to find in the dark. Had fun visiting sister in Gualala. Will be back now that we know where it is. Thanks so much, Liz.
