Hideaway Amongst Redwoods and Gardens Above Ocean in Gualala

Bedrooms 2
Space 1,400 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms + Sunroom, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 6)

The Hideaway is a fabulous Mendocino Coast Vacation rental. You can feel the rest of the world almost slip away as you enter this enchanted place. Here you will find our house and property situated on the ridge above the ocean. In this very private location you feel as if time has paused in a different era, one where life is simple, where kids run free to explore the forest without worry, where there is no traffic, no noise, you feel transformed.

Our house just outside of Gualala (pronounced wa-la-la) is located about 30 miles south of Mendocino, and about six miles north of the famous Sea Ranch, a coastal development renowned for its architectural respect for the environment. Which means you have easy access to the arts, entertainment and shopping to be found in Gualala. The presence of Sea Ranch and many vacation homes allow wonderful shopping and arts to thrive in this small community. Nearby there are wineries, galleries, restaurants, wonderful beaches, kayaking, hiking, lighthouses, (See our What To Do section). Though even with all this to do, we often find it hard to tear ourselves away from our hideaway on the hill.

Our home is surrounded by gardens and redwood trees. We are close enough to the ocean to hear the sea lions barking in the distance. The kitchen is spacious with a large table for the whole family to enjoy meals together and in the winter warmed by a woodstove. The kitchen is fully equipped with pots/dishes/utensils/dishwasher, just bring your food!

The open floor plan includes the kitchen, living room and sun room. Beautifully decorated, the living room features a hide-a-bed couch, flagstone fireplace and TV, with satellite, TV, DVD, VCR and Bose. Directly connected is the large sunroom, with an open ceiling and panoramic windows to the gardens and horizon view. This bright room is an irresistible space to spend the morning with a cup of coffee or tea, wondering how this place makes time stand still.

The master bedroom is also bright with a wonderful king sized bed. A large sliding door opens on to a private deck that leads to the hot tub. The second bedroom is large with two double beds. The bathroom has a beautiful flagstone floor, shower and deep Japanese soaking tub with view out to the gardens. The best part of the bathroom however is the door that leads directly to the back deck and the outdoor shower, where you can look up at the redwoods while you shower.

The house is 1400 square feet, and sleeps 6 (8 with the hide-a-bed). We are the last house on a gravel road that leads up the Hill and are situated on about 3 acres which includes beautiful perennial gardens, redwood forest and a large sunny yard. We are bordered by several large 100+ acre parcels of forest. The location, about a mile up a gravel road from the coast/beach, means that we often sit above the morning coastal fog, enjoying sunshine while the coast is still shrouded.

A few minutes drive from the bottom of our road lies Cook’s Beach. We call it private beach but a few years ago the California Coastal Commission built a beautiful path and steps and we learned it had an official name. Now the access is easy to this beautiful cove with about 150 yards of sandy beach. North up the road a mile lies the beach at Fish Rock, a larger nice sandy beach. Here the Anchor Bay campground also provides a place to launch small boats for fisherman and abalone divers.

About Owner/Manager

We are a family of 5 that loves to ski, bike , hike and run. We love art and nature and forests and gardens.

Owner/Manager purchased this house in 2002

Why Owner/Manager chose North Coast California

This part of the coast is spectacular, with just the right mix of culture vs solitude for us. They call this the Banana belt because of the warm temperatures often felt here. Often warmer and sunnier than the bay area. By sitting at the top of the Hill we avoid most coastal fog and enjoy warm temps.

What makes this house unique

The property is unique because of its solitude at the end of the road, the space to play explore and hike, the beautiful redwoods and the horizon view.

A really beautiful, secluded place.

  • 4 of 5

My boyfriend and I had a lovely time up at The Hideaway. We enjoyed the seclusion, beauty of the gardens, access to Gualala, and the Beautiful house itself. It was clean, and well-stocked except for soap in the bathroom. The host was responsive and friendly in her messages. The only thing we were not satisfied with about our trip was that although Wi-Fi was advertised, it was not in working order when we got there, and the password was not easily accessible had it been working. Most people who stay here won't mind having no Wi-Fi or cell service anyway though so it's not a big loss. I would definitely stay here again and would recommend it to others.

Truly a Hideaway

  • 5 of 5

We were in need of a retreat and this property fit the bill. Peace and quiet in spades and a hot tub to sooth away the city blues. The house is fully equipped for cooking and nicely decorated/furnished. Loved the outdoor shower. The few questions we had were answered promptly. We would stay here again. Thanks

Pictures does the place no justice! Just choose this one already!

  • 5 of 5 was seriously hard to find at night. We drove past it at night. It's a wooden sign. I highly recommend finding the place when there's light out and no cars are behind your butt, pressuring you to drive the speed limit. We had to bust a U in Point Arena. No internet or cell service so print a map or take a picture of your map! Then we got thoroughly lost on the dirt road. When you come to the "top", if you're not careful, you won't see the left hand option (at night). We ended up going the opposite direction. After about 30 mins of wandering, we found it! It was almost 10' o'clock by now. The house is just adorable. We unloaded and fell asleep. The next day, we wandered the garden, sat in the sun room, walked around the property and found the zip line (fun!), found a platform stage and laid under the trees. We did not want to leave the house. Not even to see the ocean. If you are looking for seclusion, but like the thought of not being completely alone, this is the place. Neighbors are far away and you cannot see each other through the forest. We eventually convinced ourselves that we needed to leave and the ocean was just as beautiful. This stay has ticked all my boxes of things I wanted to do and more! All I can say is hands-down best place I've ever used on Home Away. Thanks!

Beautiful house in the redwoods!

  • 5 of 5

Loved our stay here, exactly as pictured and even more beautiful yard/outdoor area. Road to get up to the house was definitely unpaved and made it a little complicated to find at first, but once we made some turns it was not a problem.

Would've brought warmer clothes as the house didn't heat up very well, but bedroom was warm and fireplace helped greatly!

Awesome and spacious kitchen that had a beautiful oak table and plenty of room for a nice meal. Hot tub was great, ready and warm right when we arrived!

Wi-fi is definitely limited, so expect to unplug when you are out here. Very clean and comfortable, would definitely come back!

Lovely private home in the redwoods

  • 5 of 5

We had such a lovely stay at the Hideaway! It was very quiet and private, but easy access into Gualala and to the beaches. We enjoyed the big living room + kitchen, the great yard + garden, and we loved the outdoor shower! My husband loved the fireplace and we were grateful that wood was supplied so we didn't have to worry about bringing in anything. We had a hard time getting the hot tub to turn on, and wish there had been more specific instructions so we could have had it working sooner. But really, no complaints! A lovely place.
