Gualala House Rental Photos and Description

House, 2 Bedrooms + Sunroom, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 6)

The Hideaway is a fabulous Mendocino Coast Vacation rental. You can feel the rest of the world almost slip away as you enter this enchanted place. Here you will find our house and property situated on the ridge above the ocean. In this very private location you feel as if time has paused in a different era, one where life is simple, where kids run free to explore the forest without worry, where there is no traffic, no noise, you feel transformed.

Our house just outside of Gualala (pronounced wa-la-la) is located about 30 miles south of Mendocino, and about six miles north of the famous Sea Ranch, a coastal development renowned for its architectural respect for the environment. Which means you have easy access to the arts, entertainment and shopping to be found in Gualala. The presence of Sea Ranch and many vacation homes allow wonderful shopping and arts to thrive in this small community. Nearby there are wineries, galleries, restaurants, wonderful beaches, kayaking, hiking, lighthouses, (See our What To Do section). Though even with all this to do, we often find it hard to tear ourselves away from our hideaway on the hill.

Our home is surrounded by gardens with a distant water view out to the ocean from the kitchen and the sunroom. The kitchen is spacious with a large table for the whole family to enjoy meals together and in the winter warmed by a woodstove. The kitchen is fully equipped with pots/dishes/utensils/dishwasher, just bring your food!

The open floor plan includes the kitchen, living room and sun room. Beautifully decorated, the living room features a hide-a-bed couch, flagstone fireplace and TV, with satellite, TV, DVD, VCR and Bose. Directly connected is the large sunroom, with an open ceiling and panoramic windows to the gardens and horizon view. This bright room is an irresistible space to spend the morning with a cup of coffee or tea, wondering how this place makes time stand still.

The master bedroom is also bright with a wonderful king sized bed. A large sliding door opens on to a private deck that leads to the hot tub. The second bedroom is large with two double beds. The bathroom has a beautiful flagstone floor, shower and deep Japanese soaking tub with view out to the gardens. The best part of the bathroom however is the door that leads directly to the back deck and the outdoor shower, where you can look up at the redwoods while you shower.

The house is 1400 square feet, and sleeps 6 (8 with the hide-a-bed). We are the last house on a gravel road that leads up the Hill and are situated on about 3 acres which includes beautiful perennial gardens, redwood forest and a large sunny yard. We are bordered by several large 100+ acre parcels of forest. The location, about a mile up a gravel road from the coast/beach, means that we often sit above the morning coastal fog, enjoying sunshine while the coast is still shrouded.

A few minutes drive from the bottom of our road lies Cook’s Beach. We call it private beach but a few years ago the California Coastal Commission built a beautiful path and steps and we learned it had an official name. Now the access is easy to this beautiful cove with about 150 yards of sandy beach. North up the road a mile lies the beach at Fish Rock, a larger nice sandy beach. Here the Anchor Bay campground also provides a place to launch small boats for fisherman and abalone divers.

About Owner/Manager

We are a family of 5 that loves to ski, bike , hike and run. We love art and nature and forests and gardens.

Owner/Manager purchased this house in 2002

Why Owner/Manager chose North Coast California

This part of the coast is spectacular, with just the right mix of cullture vs solitude for us. They call this the Banana belt because of the warm temperatures often felt here. Often warmer and sunnier than the bay area. By sitting at the top of the Hill we avoid most coastal fog and enjoy warm temp's.

What makes this house unique

The property is unique because of its solitude at the end of the road, the space to play explore and hike, the beautiful redwoods and the horizon view.

Comfortable and charming!

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed 3 days in the Hideaway and loved it. We had our tea in the jacuzzi each morning while we watched the deer graze outside the property. Played games, provided by the owner, near the wood fire, and prepared or meals in a wonderfully stocked kitchen. The beds were so comfortable!

We walked a couple of pocket beaches through the day and found a fun farmers market on Saturday.

We would definitely return!

Rejuvenate your senses

  • 5 of 5

Yes, you don't have a view of the water but the absolute peace and quiet of this cottage in the woods is worth the visit. It takes a few hours for the silence to sink take in the slow pace. The cottage is beautifully done, stocked with plenty of towels and blankets. The place was spotless and had been deep cleaned. Liz, the owner was very easy to communicate with. I wish we had been able to complete our stay as planned. Another time maybe. Trinks was our go to place for breakfast and highly recommended.

Nice getaway! But be prepared to almost fully disconnect!!!

  • 4 of 5

We visited at the end of July 2016. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay. The house is clean, well-equipped, and comfortable. The property was very fun for my 8-year-old twins to explore - they spent a lot of time outdoors. (They especially loved the outdoor shower once they realized that there were no neighbors that could see them!)

Cook's beach was great - we spent a whole day there! And the little downtown of Gualala is fun...and just minutes away!

Note that the wifi isn't great. Despite inquiring with the owner ahead of time and hearing that "the wifi works well," that wasn't my experience. We stayed during the week, and there were a couple of emails I needed to be able to received and send for work, even though I was on vacation. The very slow connection was bad enough that most of my emails couldn't even be downloaded to view. I had to go into town and catch the free wifi at Trink's, which was fine... but not what I expected based on my inquiry. Also, no AT&T cell service up there...but I expected that.

Also, we never really saw the ocean from the property. Some of this is due to the time of year...there's a lot of fog in the summer! That said, by the late afternoon the fog burned off down at the beach as well as up on the hill where the house is...yet we couldn't actually see water. Don't get me's beautiful, but just be aware that this is up in the trees and it's not like there's a sweeping ocean view. (Although you can hear it, which is fun!)

Overall, nice stay!

Amazing house, great amenities, just what we needed for this trip!

  • 5 of 5

We needed a place for a mom's weekend away from the fast rush of the world. And we found it here. Beautiful place to explore if you wanted. Close enough to the beach to drive there. Quite a long drive up the driveway BUT not bad just unexpected. It is called the hideaway for a reason. But don't let this turn you off at all. We would def return to this location for a break away from life and all it entails. Thank you for the cleanliness. Sometimes you pay for cleaning to be done and it's not even to your own standards. It was beautiful. THANK YOU. Oh and loved Gualala! neat town and so many options of beaches and the river. :)

Great way to unplug and recharge your batteries.

  • 4 of 5

My wife, myself and inlaws had a wonderful week @ the hideaway. The home is cozy and user-friendly and the garden and property is amazing. We loved the location, at the top of the Ridge and the peacefulness and privacy that comes with that. It was also refreshing not to hear our cell phones ringing and pinging, it made for quality face time. We gave the land line number to family incase of emergency, so we didn't feel out of touch. The only thing keeping us from giving this beautiful home 5 stars would be the beds. Though we slept pretty good, quality bed's would make this property perfect for my family.

Thank you Liz, for sharing your beautiful home, we'll be back.

Gracious and accommodating host!

We had very much been looking forward to a trip to this property when I had an unforeseen medical emergency; Liz was so kind and gracious about our last-minute cancellation. We are looking forward to a visit in the near future!
