Great Access to Silverton Avalanche School

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Animas River House while taking a backcountry ski course at the Silverton Avalanche School, which was about a 3-4 minute walk from the house. Our stay was wonderful--very comfortable and with all of the kitchen amenities we needed to cook most of our meals at the house. The last night, we were able to easily walk to Blair/Green Streets for dinner. Additionally, Dan and Sarah allowed my friend to bring her dog last minute when her house sitter fell through. I hope to get back up to Silverton soon for another stay at Animas River House!

Lovely and quiet!

Lovely space - walking distance to the tiny ski area - but some great backcountry skiing on trails up Kendall mountain and on red mountain pass. This house is in a great location for ski out/in!

Comfy and Relaxing

  • 5 of 5

We had an amazing stay at the Animas River House in Silverton, CO. The pictures and descriptions are exactly as described and the kitchen, furnishings, and beds are comfy and cozy especially on a cold mountain evening! We had bacon every morning with the sun rising over the mountains and we would walk our little Corgi down the block and around the corner to Brown Bear Dinner for coffee to sip while we made and ate our breakfast in the large kitchen/dining area.

The patio was gorgeous to look out upon and view the mountains and Animas river. All in all a perfect little get away spot that is close to nature and near enough to town to visit, shop, and dine. We went during the off season so some places where closed for the remainder of the fall but many places where still open and will be re-opening for the winter ski season which will probably make this an even more fantastic getaway location for the winter months.

The only real items that need attention in this Animas River House is as one poster previously reviewed, the master bed can squeak a lot if you plan on moving around in the master bed. It is a solid wood headboard and foot-board so a little wood stain/sealant and some tightening of the wood screws would probably eliminate this problem. There is plenty of storage space in the two bedrooms, but you will have to navigate between the bed and the armoire so some re-positioning of the bed to armoire might help allow a little more space for foot traffic in the master bedroom. If you plan on doing cooking in the kitchen it is pretty well stocked with most items but depending on what you cook and the utensils you need, you will have to do some hand washing. The kitchen is spacious but as a short term rental it does not have a dish washer or clothes washing machines so remember to bring foods that are easy to cook/clean and enough clothes for your stay. Finally as the description says and some people have accidentally overlooked, this unit is a two story apartment house, with the downstairs reserved for long term rental and the upstairs for short term rental. There is a shared entryway for both units secured by key/keypad lock and then you go upstairs. The downstairs tenants where great and we had fun meeting them and getting to know them, they even let us use the dog fence to have our dog and their dog play so it worked out perfectly, but don't expect to have the entire house to yourself and remember to be courteous to your downstairs neighbor.

Relaxation And Scenic Beauty Abound!

  • 5 of 5

The Animas House is simple elegance.

It's a great place for a couple, two couples, or a small family, to enjoy a spectacular Colorado vacation. The beds are comfortable, there's ample hot water in the shower, the kitchen is well equipped to handle most anything you might want to prepare, and the TV area/living room is cozy and functional.

The outside deck is small but is a welcome perch/eagles-nest, of sorts, that allowed us to enjoy the sights and sounds of the outdoors, and the town, each morning and evening. The outside grill is small, but adequate, and it served us well while preparing chicken and pork chops on two occasions.

There is no A/C but all you have to do is open up the windows and soak up the cool breezes that move up and down the valley and across the river. The heater, which came on a couple of nights during our stay, definitely works and if not properly adjusted will indeed make it toasty inside. I'm sure it will do a fine job in winter!

The house is clean and well maintained and everything was as described by the owner. The only bit of a negative we found was that the shower was a bit tight. The wife said she found it hard to shave her legs.

If you're looking for, or require, "fancy digs" then this is not for you. If you want functional, cozy, and relaxed, then I highly recommend The Animas House.

We found The Animas House to be the perfect place to enjoy our summer vacation.

The sunrise over the mountains each morning, with the Animas River gurgling and running only a few yards away, refreshed our soul and relaxed our mind. We would sit outside on the elevated deck, drinking our coffee and tea, as each day began watching the sunlight spill across the valley illuminating the town.

As mid-morning/mid-day would approach the whistle of the Durango And Silverton Narrow Gauge steam engine could be heard echoing up the valley as the train made its way into town. It was a sensation of a bygone era and a welcome note of the history of the region.

Days and afternoons were spent exploring the high country via Jeep and taking in the breathtaking scenery as our Wrangler crept and clawed its way up and over the passes and down into the gulches.

Evenings were soft and relaxed. We would either walk the Main Street of Silverton and find a spot for supper or we'd prepare our own meal at The Animas House.

If you want the trappings of a city stay in Durango or Telluride. If you want to relax stay in The Animas House.

Nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there

  • 4 of 5

The overall experience was good. Silverton is a nice little town. The RiverHouse was close to where my event was taking place, at the Kendle Mountain Center, so I was able to walk there when the weather was nice.

The little apartment upstairs will fit about 6 to 8 people, depending on how much room people need. It was just about right for the two of us. The bedroom near the stairs I think can sleep two, though the bed is pretty creaky. Every time I moved around it would creak and moan. Needless to say, I didn't sleep all that well. One of the lamps on the nightstand was broken when we got there. Nothing too major, I just hope I don't get in trouble for that because it was already like that.

The other bedroom has a bunk bed with a larger bed on the bottom, so I think it could sleep three people. There was a mattress on the floor under the bed in the first bedroom, and then in theory the sofa is a pullout. We didn't need those obviously.

The kitchen is small but useful enough if you are only staying for about a week, especially if you eat out at the restaurants there. Everything was clean and easy to use and find. One of the pans had a loose handle, though, so be careful.

The Dining table can fit 6 people, so plenty of room for a larger family or group of friends.

The sofa was comfortable and I spent a fair amount of my time there when I wasn't out and about. I didn't watch any movies or shows so I can't tell you if the TV actually works. The internet is great for surfing the web.

The bathroom is fairly large, but the shower stall is pretty tiny. I figure it's not that big of a deal since you don't spend your whole day in there, but figured I would mention it so you know what you are getting. There is some soap and shampoo in the stall for you to use, but we brought our own. The water pressure at the sink is rather strong, but the pressure in the shower was less so. I'm not sure if that was the shower head or what.

The heat works marvelously in the little apartment. It was pretty cold a couple of the days we were up there so we turned the heat on. You can definitely feel a difference as you go down the stairs to leave. It gets much colder toward the front door.

From the kitchen/ dining area, there is a great view of one of the mountains and a creek running back behind the buidling.

Overall, this was a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there permanently. It would be a little small for every day life.
