Not really impressed

  • 2 of 5

Could use a good cleaning. Spider webs on front door. Spider webs around kitchen cabinets. Lady Bugs and Stink bugs in house. Walk down to the dock and back to the house is a very strenuous workout...We will not be returning visitors. Bring your own pillows and a couple of fly swatters.

Owner's Response: Rebecca; We are very surprised of your review and sorry that you did not enjoy yourself. When I met you and spoke with your husband, I was very happy to hear how delighted you both were that the family could be together. He said that everything was wonderful, the house was great and the kids enjoyed fishing off the dock. I offered him more fishing poles and charcoal from the shed . We are on the James river, and you will have lady bugs in Virginia in the fall. We personally clean after each guest so we know that everything is fresh!! It is important to us to know our guests are greeted by a house that feels cozy and welcoming. Our pictures show the path to the river and most love the magnificent views! It is unfortunate you felt the walk to the river too strenuous. We do hope you enjoyed some of our personal touches such as the gift basket with wine and snacks, toiletries, laundry soap, firewood ,paper towels and spices. We really value our travelers and try our best to help their stay be fun and relaxing. We look forward to their reviews and hearing about the big fish that they caught or the one that got away, the family gatherings, meeting the perspective son in-law or the relaxing time enjoying nature. We are also very proud of our military and happy that we could be a ( home) away from home for your son and all the other soldiers. We hope that your Thanksgiving spent with your family was wonderful!!

Gem on the James!

  • 5 of 5

What a fantastic 5 days we had at the cottage! It was just what we were looking for...quiet, peaceful, relaxing, and as cozy as home! We've stayed in Richmond a million times visiting our daughter and really needed something new. Totally found the place! Close to town, but no traffic or noise. Amazing views and easy access to historic sites. Incredibly easy to visit/hike around Dutch Gap, Forts Harrison and Brady, Malvern Hill Battlefield and enjoy the winery at Shirley Plantation! Also, very enjoyable walk to Deep Bottom Park and along 4 Mile Creek.

The property itself was just amazing! A perfect welcome gift greeted us upon arrival. The kitchen was well stocked with basics plus more, beds very comfy and all living areas were clean, warm and cozy! We were able to enjoy a great campfire and lots of time on the dock since the weather was so nice (for mid November). Janet and Rob were just great. So glad we got to chat a bit while they were working on their new house. Very kind and thoughtful people!.

Can't get much better than listening to flocks of geese/ducks fly into wetland areas, watching a pair of eagles soar about and the sun set over the James! Hope to be back!

Wonderful, Rustic Property

  • 5 of 5

I thoroughly enjoyed staying at Janet's property. The property is peaceful, quiet, well decorated and furnished, and certainly very cozy. The beds are very comfortable, which helped me get a couple of good nights' sleep prior to running the Richmond marathon. The grounds are beautiful and overlook the James River (unfortunately, due to unseasonable frigid weather, I did not get to enjoy the property as much as I would have liked). The property a quick shot (15 minute drive) down Rt. 5 to downtown Richmond, and has a grocery and drug store nearby.

I would certainly reccommend Janet's property for those planning a trip to Richmond.

Peacefull escape from the not so far city.

  • 5 of 5

This home gave our family exactly

What we needed. An escape from the city! We were able to travel and see all the historical sights like Williamsburg, Jamestown Yorktown and Washington DC within a couple hours drive. The bike path just down the road was amazing! The river was perfect. We had the 3 little kids sleep on the king bed while my husband and I slept on the double bed and our soldier we picked up after he graduated enjoyed the day bed in the 4 season room. The little things like shampoo and conditioner and laundry soap cane in handy as we did run out of our own. The food lion just down the road was very helpful. Although we never were able to figure out where the Walmart was.. only 20 minutes from Fort Lee and An hour 15 from Fort Eustis. Were our soldiers girlfriend is stationed. It was just perfect. I actually didn’t mind doing dishes by hand even though I haven’t had to do that since I was a kid! Lol.

A cozy river getaway

  • 5 of 5

This house was perfect for a long weekend with small kids. The house is well-kept and well-furnished, and the kitchen in particular was much better equipped than I expected. The property is great for exploring and the river is lovely from up by the house or down by the dock.
