About the property

2 Bedrooms & Loft, sleeps 6, screened porch and deck overlooking the river!

SmileInn Over the River is a cozy, relaxing cabin where you can really get away from all the stress of daily living! Enjoy your family and friends while grilling on the back deck overlooking the river! Roast marshmallows at the fire pit in the evening down by the river. Smile as your heart warms watching your kids and dogs running, playing, having the time of their life on the huge wide open field along the river! Make memories to take home and keep forever!

We are a very pet friendly cabin as we believe your pets are an important part of your family and should be able to vacation with you! There is an enclosed dog run right next to the deck for those times when you don't want them running free.

There are no hidden fees in our price everything is included! No fees for linens, pets, firewood, cleaning or charges for additional people! We also supply all paper products and the kitchen is stocked for your gourmet cooking! We try to supply all the staples and spices that you may need in preparing your meals.

SmileInn sits on 3 acres of property along the river with almost 400 feet of river frontage in the heart of Shenandoah Valley. The cabin sits near the end of a gravel road which we call cabin ally. The nice thing about that it is beyond all the traffic, noise and dust of the buses transporting people back and forth all day to various locations for tubing, kayaking and canoeing. The downside about that its just a little further to drive (almost 8 miles on a gravel road). It is almost 30 minutes to town. You are still within reach of enjoying everything Luray and the Shenandoah Valley has to offer. You can also just stay home, relax in the hammock and enjoy the peace and quiet of the river.

The cabin sleeps 6 comfortably. There are 2 bedrooms and a loft. The downstairs bedroom has a queen bed, the upstairs bedroom has 2 double beds and a half bath in it. There is a loft outside the upstairs bedroom with a futon. The bathroom on the first floor is divided into two separate rooms next to each other. One includes the toilet and vanity sink, the other is a walk in shower and whirlpool bathtub. This makes it more user friendly to families and groups of people. The kitchen has all new appliances as well as a microwave, toaster, blender and combination coffeemaker. The dining area seats six and also leads out to the screened in porch with another table. There is an open deck area outside the screened porch with another large table and a propane gas grill. The living room area has a sofa with 2 sides that recline and also a separate reclining chair all situated around the gas fireplace. The long front porch has a porch swing and additional seating.

Down by the river we have a fire pit with an unlimited supply of firewood for your campfires. We also have a hammock and a picnic table. There is a set of stairs we have put in to make access into the river easier from the bank. We supply a canoe and 6 river tubes for our guests to use. We also have several outdoor yard games including horse shoes and corn hole boards.

All the amenities of home are provided such as Wi-Fi, DIRECTV, DVD player and phone service with nationwide long distance included.

The area below the cabin along the river is perfect if you are planning a small event or family gathering. There is also plenty of room to set up tents if your kids or you want to have the full camping experience by the river yet still be close to the conveniences of home. There is an access road that runs along the bottom of the hill below the cabin. You can access that from the road about a 1/4 mile past the cabin. You can drive vehicles on that if you have someone that can't make the walk from the cabin down to the river or if you want to transport supplies for a cookout or any water sports.

The drive into town and the nearest grocery store is about 30 minutes so you may want to stock up on food and preplan your meals to avoid unnecessary trips to the store.

The historic town of Luray, Luray Caverns, Lake Arrowhead and Jellystone Park are about a half hour drive. Shenandoah National Park including the entrance to Skyline Drive, Wisteria Vineyard, and New Market Battlefield are about an hour drive. The cabin is located at the base of Massanutten Mountain and borders the George Washington National Forest. There are hiking trails nearby which include the Habron Gap Trail and Indian Grave Ridge Trail. There are many more trails located along Massanutten and also in Shenandoah National Park.

Post Christmas Wind Down

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful stay. The cabin was just what we needed for some down time after Christmas. We really enjoyed the setting and being able to walk along the river.

Nice cabin, however...

  • 3 of 5

It is EXTREMELY remote so if you have any health condition you are very far from help. Don't try to get there in the dark - 6 miles down a dirt road. The cabin is very lovely and the view of the Shenandoah out the back is beautiful. I felt the check out cleaning requirements were too much to ask - I pay people to do that level of cleaning at home (in addition to the typical stripping the sheets off the bed you are asked to sweep, mop floor, clean tub, etc.)

So if you are young, healthy and don't mind housework it's probably great!

PS - owners, ck the ventilation on your gas fireplace. We kept getting headaches when we used it even though we left a window open a little. It's a really nice gas fireplace!

Owner's Response: We apologize for the long drive on the gravel road however we do list that it is a half hour drive from town. Most people who are interested are looking for a remote location that is quiet and away from everything. Many that have stayed there have listed that as one of the things they like. As for the cleaning, we do not ask a lot and we do not charge a cleaning fee as many cabins do. We just ask that people respect our place and try to leave it as they found it. We do not expect our guests to scrub everything just wipe down counters and sweep the floor and take the sheets off the bed and place in a pile. We provide all the linens to make things easier on our guests so they don't have to bring their own and make their beds when they get there.

Great getaway

  • 5 of 5

Enjoyed this riverfront cabin home -- clean, comfortable beds and well-stocked house. The backyard was large and next to the Shenandoah River. We kayaked (downstream, to the left toward railroad bridge) where the river was deep and easy current, hiked nearby thanks to Kristin's and Jeff's recommendations and enjoyed dinners at the picnic table by the fire outside. A great way to end our trip.

Enjoyed every minute----

  • 5 of 5

directions were easy, the cottage was perfect- we headed to the deck as soon as we unloaded the car- and spent a lot of time outdoors--the lower yard, hammock and fire ring were well used and the grill--we only ventured out 1 day to Caverns--the Smile Inn was too enjoyable to wander. Our dog Mojo loved the deck and screened porch--the crate that was provided was good for us-he sleeps in one at home.We would recommend the cottage for those seeking solitude and reconnecting with the great outdoors---hope to return!

Beautiful, well kept property and cabin.

  • 5 of 5

The cabin was clean, well equipped with everything you need for cooking, baking or grilling. The living room, dining area and bedrooms were comfortable and nicely done. The screened in deck had a table and chairs and overhead fans and was where we ate most of our meals. Beyond that the outside deck had a large gas grill, table and chairs and a really pretty view of the back yard, woods and river. Down at the river is the best hammock I ever have seen. Enjoyed it, and I don't normally like hammocks. We made use of the large fire pit by the river several evenings and appreciate the large stockpile of fire wood stacked there. Enjoyed swimming with our dog in the river and using the canoe and floats that were under the cabin.

The cabin also has a really nice fenced in area for your four legged friends.

We really had a relaxing and fun week and would definitely come back. Bob K. Cincinnati, Ohio.

About Jeff and Kristin Gaulard

Jeff and I have lived in Luray for about 10 years and we love the area. There are gorgeous views everywhere you look. We love the quiet area, no hustle and bustle, no traffic! We love the small town feeling! We have owned SmileInn Over the River for about 4 years. It is nice when you hear that guests had a wonderful time and were able to come out to Luray and get away from it all. I am retired from the fire department in Fairfax County, VA and Jeff left his job in insurance to open and run our new store in Luray.

We own a business where we repurpose wine barrels, bottles and corks. We make furniture and other various unique items from all of them. We also bought a store on Highway 211 recently, formerly White House Antiques and Souvenirs and renamed Massanutten Country Corner. We plan to promote made in the USA and anything made and grown locally. We are in the process of working on renovations. Our plans are to have a garden shop, farmers market, cafe and our main store featuring Cork to Barrel and other unique gifts and home decor.

We live near the base of Massanutten and our home is also the home for 5 dogs, 3 cats and 7 goats and we have 2 horses that are boarded nearby at River Hill Stables. We love and enjoy all of our 4 legged family!

Please stop by our store while visiting the area and anyone interested in visiting our goats just let us know and we can make arrangements for you to visit.

Why Jeff and Kristin Gaulard chose Luray

We loved the peaceful and quiet area where the cabin is located. There is a wide, open field down by the river a large amount of river frontage. Lots of room for kids and dogs to run around and play.

What makes this cabin unique

One thing that is nice about this property is that it is located beyond the route for drop off and pick up for all the river outfitters for tubes and kayaks. During the season there are buses constantly driving all up and down the road past most of the rentals on the river. SmileInn Over the River is beyond their route so you have the peace and quiet all day long!
