Modica: Modica is spread over the sides of two valleys, where two rivers merge into a wide rocky gorge. A flood in 1902 led to the rivers being covered over through the town, now forming the main roads. During medieval times, many of the homes were carved from the sandstone, into caves (grottas) overlooking the rivers. The labyrinth of streets climb up the gorges where over 100 baroque churches are interspersed with cobbled lanes, ancient steps, and fine nobles’ houses. The area’s delicate blend of history, nature, and the sea has contributed to its rich gastronomical delights, including fresh produce year round, local specialty recipes for chocolate, wine, olive oil, meat dishes, fish, ricotta cheese, and pastries. A new airport recently opened to International flights in the nearby city of Comiso (25 kilometers). Ryanair, an inexpensive airline in Europe has opened a major hub there. Other airlines are planning flights as well. For more, click on 'Please click here to view more information' at the very bottom of this page.

We are a recently retired couple that like to travel. We live in Oregon, USA. We enjoy history, photography, and hiking. Our goal is to immerse ourselves in European culture and history every year for a month.
The Owner purchased this house in 2010
We discovered Sicily and the wonderful culture in 2010. The town of Modica is a beautiful UNESCO World Heritage Baroque city that is centrally located around 4 other UNESCO cities, vineyards, and award winning beaches.
Our two flats are newly remodeled in the local Sicilian style. They are accessed from two separate lanes. These flats are exactly what he seek in other cities: in the historical center; easy walking distance to restaurants, markets, shops, places of interest. We offer these flats at a very reasonable price for the amenities (fully furnished).
We enjoyed our stay in Grotta Bassa so much! The apartment was charming and comfortable, and, because of its obvious connection to the limestone cliffs, made us feel a part of the living history of the region. There was a wonderful view of the cliffs and the city from our upstairs bedroom window. Perhaps the best part was the location – the center of town with its shops and restaurants was only a 10-minute walk down the sweet stone path that ran behind our Grotta. We’d go back to this city and this property again in a heartbeat!
This apartment was wonderfully designed and in a perfect location. The hosts were great, as was their local property manager who was very attentive and helpful in every way. We were 3 adults staying in the basso apartment and it worked perfectly for us. Newly remodeled, very clean and quiet. The apartment's location in old town Modica couldn't be better, with great views and the market and various shops and restaurants within a very short walk.
Modica is definitely well worth visiting and exploring. The cuisine, wine and cappuccinos were so very, very good, and the people were so very welcoming and nice. Modica also served as a great base for day trips to other Unesco historical sites, charming villages, and - let's not forget - the sandy and sunny Mediterranean beaches.
Highly recommend Modica and staying at this apartment!
This artistically designed little bungalow tucked into the rock hillside of Old Modica is absolutely adorable with a perfect location. 1 block from the Farmers Market, 2 blocks from the local bakery, deli, and fish market and 3 blocks from several local restaurants and many shops, it was the PERFECT Sicily vacation rental. Beautiful Sampieri Beach and Marina De Modica are both a 25 minute drive with the Mediterranean Ocean the most turquoise blue I've ever seen! The Greek Theatre in Syracuse, built in the 5th Century B.C., was AMAZING!! You will enjoy Julie & Mike's little place while experiencing the island of Sicily....then take home all the wonderful memories with you to share with friends and family!!
What a wonderful experience to spend 8 nights in the heart of Modica!! This place is built into the cliff with amazing artistically created updated touches. Simply magnificent! Close to restaurants, shops, the local bakery, fish market, cheese & meat market, and Farmers Market, we walked everywhere we went. Saint Giorgio Cathedral is a 5 minute walk. The views of old Modica makes you feel like you are living a part of the local history.
