Casa Ventanas del Mar, a beautiful Baja beach retreat is located steps from the tranquil Sea of Cortez, in the area of Baja known aas the East Cape. It is about 1 and1/2 hours north of the airport of San Jose del Cabo, and about two hours south of la Paz. Built around a courtyard in the colonial style it is perfect for two couples and a couple of kids. With three bedrooms and two baths, it sleeps six people in comfort and the floor plan provides maximum privacy with each bedroom having it's own entrance. This house is perfect for those that want a relaxing vacation unhampered by hoards of tourists. If you love to swim, fish, Kayak, Snorkel, kite surf, or just lay by the pool and work on your tan, this is your dream vacation spot. With nothing but the sound of the sea to lull you to sleep at night, you will feel relaxed and refreshed by the end of your stay.
There are a couple of basic restaurants in town, but you can also have dinners catered by local chefs for around 14 dollars per person. We will help you make the arrangements before you arrive if you want dinner ready for you that first night. You can also arrange fishing and whale watching trips from a purveyor right in El Cardonal. Boats leave from the beach in front of our house. The man across the street runs a taxi service so it could not be more convenient.
We are a retired couple, currently living in the Bay Area when we aren't enjoying 'our beach' in Baja. We love all the activities that our beach location affords. Kayaking, snorkeling, beach combing, kite surfing (in the winter), fishing, whale watching, and just floating in the beautiful Sea of Cortez.
Marilyn and Alan Pomeroy purchased this house in 2004
We sailed down to the Sea of Cortez in our 31 foot Trimaran in 1990. We enjoyed the area so much that we bought property, and years later built our dream house. We like the fact that it is out of the way of the throngs of tourists that visit Cabo. The people are friendly and accommodating, and you know you are in Mexico, not in a resort that could be located anywhere. Our home is full of artifacts from our travels throughout mainland Mexico. It is built around a courtyard, which, along with the pool wall, provide maximum privacy while still offering breathtaking views of the beautiful Sea of Cortez.
We built our home on an acre and 1/2 of beach front property in the colonial style which includes a private courtyard with access to each of the bedrooms. We furnished it with unique pieces which we collected over the years on our frequent trips to Mainland Mexico, with it's many beautiful colonial cities. The many sliding glass doors and windows provide an unobstructed view of the Sea as well as a constant source of ventilation from the gentle breezes.
Cardonal is a rural village. The cattle are free range, and there is plenty of wild life, many birds, including road runners, hawks, frigates, and pelicans. You can see whales and dolphins from the house, as well as manta rays, and occasional sea lions. There is a small coral reef in our bay which is great for snorkeling. You can pull your kayak right into the water from our beach. Also kite and windsurfing opportunities during the winter months. And of course, the lap pool if you swim for exercise. A neighboring restaurant, La Terraza also offers horse back riding. You can also arrange excursions to Magdelena Bay for whale watching, or Todo Santos and La Paz for a bit of local culture. Taxi's and Van's are conveniently available through our neighbor across the street. He can also pick you up from the airport if you prefer not to rent a car.
We had a great time! I loved the pool and enjoyed morning laps - this was exactly how I'd hoped it would be! The kayaks were great and we even got the dolfins with us this morning! It was truly magical as they put on a show for us. Snorkelling at the reef was fun and there was no lack of things to do! Luis and Blas were great at checking in as well - were able to help with whatever we needed. We enjoyed cooking on the charcoal BBQ and lots of beach walks and sunrises from the master bedroom. We had a great time! Very private and away from it all!
I traveled from Brazil to meet my two daughters, on a break from their school in Vancouver, BC, at this beautiful beach house for a reunion. Everything was perfect and more than met our expectations. Marilyn and Alan were always in communication with us to make sure there were no problems. We are looking forward to our next visit.
If you are looking for a fabulous place to relax - this is it!
We spent much of our time lounging at the pool with gentle breeze and a great view of the Sea of Cortez. The house has a nice beach access for swimming (sandy - no rocks!) and in between margaritas, you can take a great walk on it.
Although the house is in a somewhat remote location, you can get everything you need in Los Barriles, which is about a 25 minute drive south. In fact, one night we didn't want to drive to dinner so Octavio (across the street) was our chauffeur!
The highlight of the week was kayaking - we heard a noise and straight ahead were three sperm whales. They were close enough to see clearly but not too close to scare us! Once in a lifetime experience!
There are some great hiking spots nearby. Easy to arrange fishing or snorkeling charters, or just go off the beach. Swimming and Kayaking are favorite water sports.
