Kimberley is known as both the 'City of Festivals' and the 'Bavarian City of the Rockies,' it's not just the European alpine theme that sets this picturesque little city apart from nearby communities such as Cranbrook.

Things to Do in Kimberley

At an impressive elevation of 1,110m/3,642ft, Kimberley's altitude, often sunny skies and impressive amount of snowfall means it's a favoured ski/snowboard destination in the Kootenay Rockies. Kimberley Alpine Resort and the Kimberley Nordic Centre are located just minutes from 'downtown' (note that this busy 'downtown' has only one traffic light!).

Close to Kimberley are myriad lakes, rivers (including the St. Mary River) and streams that offer excellent fishing, rafting and boating opportunities. Natural mineral hot springs can be found close by (great for a soak after a long day), and there are numerous city and provincial parks and gardens, including Cominco Gardens, not far from the action in town.

Kimberley is also renowned as a golf destination. Its three championship golf courses – Bootleg Gap, Trickle Creek Golf Resort and Kimberley Golf Course are visitor favourites and are ranked among the top places to visit here. Expect challenging courses, and breathtaking and unrestricted vistas of the valley.

Festivals and Events

Its 'City of Festivals' moniker is also apt. Kimberley hosts some pretty unique events, including community faires, the International Old Time Accordion Championships and the offbeat community Dirtbag Film and Photo Festival, held in October. Summer here means celebrations – Vaudeville shows, theatre, concerts, art exhibits and more.

Kimberley History and the Locals

Kimberley has transitioned from a successful mining town to a four-season recreation and tourism destination. The fascinating culture and history is evident in the city and there are many well-preserved historical attractions. Close by is Fort Steele Heritage Town, a restored 1890s boomtown that provides great insight into this pioneer era.

The residents of Kimberley are welcoming and down-to-earth and tremendous outdoor enthusiasts. The best way to blend in is to share a coffee or a beer with the locals and ask them for tips. It's also not unusual for locals to close their shops early in order to hit the slopes on a good snow day, or the bike trails during summer – so be sure to join them. For the more adventurous, activities are available year-round (with the summer and winter seasons being busiest). For those looking for a quieter destination, spring and fall are also beautiful

Kimberley is unique in the number of recreational activities that can be enjoyed close to or within the city limits – including three championship golf courses, Kimberley Alpine Resort, and Kimberley Nature Park, one of the largest municipal parks in Canada, offering 800ha/1,800ac of parkland filled with hiking, biking, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trails.

The Kimberley Platz is home to a very big cuckoo clock! Canada's largest freestanding cuckoo clock greets visitors, and 'Happy Hans' (the town mascot) emerges with a yodel if fed a one dollar coin (also known as a 'loonie').

Kimberley's Platzl

When not on the slopes or trails or exploring local attractions, visitors will find plenty to explore near the Platzl, a pedestrian-only esplanade lined with picturesque shops, cafes, restaurants and cute, hand-painted fire hydrants. A handful of other shops, services, cafés and casual restaurants can be found about a five-minute drive south of town centre, in the small enclave of Marysville.

Outdoor pool

Please note that the pool is open in the summer only and it usually opens on May long weekend. However, The hot tub is open all year young and its on the balcony

About Roberto Navas

Married father of two beautiful boys. Live in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Originally from El Salvador but I have been living in Edmonton since 1990.

Roberto Navas purchased this condo in 2007

Why Roberto Navas chose British Columbia Mountains

I love the outdoors and so does my family. There is all year round fun activities one can do in Kimberley. It is truly a 4 seasons destination hidden gem

What makes this condo unique

This beautiful home was professionally decorated and furnished by a professional interior designer. The beautiful and elegant real wood blinds, real wood trim, doors and fire place mantle give this condo he feel of a cottage in the mountains and not of a condo. This is the only building in the Kimberley Alpine resort that is concrete construction which makes it very quiet and secure. there are 9 feet ceilings and the condo is a corner unit with windows all around it which bring in a lot of natural light to the condo. There is air conditioning for the hot summer days and if that is not enough jump in the outdoor pool. There is also a gym that can be used during your stay which is located next to the pool

Weekend in Kimberley

  • 4 of 5

The condo is very nice with high end furniture and ammenities. The kitchen is fully stocked with all that we needed We used the hot tub and gym but as it is winter the pool is not open. We were with another couple and their children and had olenty of room for all. There is one parking spot under the other building and the second available spot was in a small very tight little lot with nothing reserved. It is in a nice location near the ski hill and easy driving access from town. Enjoyed and stay and would not hesitate to book again.

Large Condo with Everything You Need

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Robertos condo for 5 nights and I can honestly say it's probably one of the nicest condos I have ever rented on VRBO. It's very large with three bedrooms, one of the bedrooms has a bunk bed for the kids. Kitchen is well stocked and all the appliances work very well too. The hot tub out on the deck has great privacy so no worries about peeping neighbors and a nice Broil King BBQ also waiting for your steaks. Overall no serious complaints, the underground parking could be tight with a jacked up truck, but my normal size truck fit quite snug but still fit, but that's not the condo owners fault that's just the design, and if you can't fit you park above ground anyways. Kimberley itself is a fantastic little town, great restaurants and super sweet people, worth the trip. Thanks Roberto :)

Five Star Luxury Stay

  • 5 of 5

This beautifuly decorated condo is not only modern, clean and spacious but has all the necessities you could ask for from a fully stocked kitchen (with most condiments provided), linens, washer & dryer, great size comfortable private deck with hot tub and heated outdoor pool. We had the opportunity to totally relax during the day be it at the pool or driving only 25 minutes to the warm waters of Wasa Lake and in the evening enjoy fantastic BBQ's on the deck. Roberto is very helpful for any questions you may have and has made this property enjoyable for families in mind having Xbox and Netflix available. We would not have changed a thing and I will defiantly recommend this property to friends and family. We are hoping to make it out again soon and look forward to staying here during the ski season.

A golf trip to remember!

  • 5 of 5

Being able to golf some of the nicest courses in western Canada was nice, but coming back to the condo was the cherry on top.

Stepping in after a round of golf and being able to either go for a hot tub or fire up the bbq was wonderful.

Anything small that you can think of was at the condo - every detail covered. After a round of golf you were left with plenty of options at the condo to enjoy the stay. As well any questions you had would be promptly answered.

I will definitely be returning here at some point for a longer stay next time

A perfect stay-5 star in our books

  • 5 of 5

We had a great stay at Roberto"s condo. The place was clean, the appliances all worked well and the hot tub was perfect. We were very comfortable. The layout was perfect for the evening get-together after a day of golf. I highly praise this accommodation and strongly recommend it for a group of adults or a family. We hope to be renting it next year when we return to Kimberley to golf.
