MORE DETAILS ABOUT THE HOUSE

Natural Air Conditioning: We are at a perfect 1600 ft (500m) elevation, with expansive ocean and coastline views. Folks who live 300 ft below us are in the lava desert where they need air conditioning many nights; homes 300 ft above us are in the cloud forest where you don't get direct sunlight some days. Here, the cool nights are a wonderful contrast to the warm sunny days. The temperature is just chilly enough most nights to want a light blanket, but warms into the 70’s by about 9am. Mosquitoes are never a problem. Eat dinner on the front lanai with a commanding view of the ocean and the sunset 365 days a year.

The Grounds: Our house is situated well off the street at the end of a long driveway in a very private 1.5 acre lot filled with banana, papaya, macadamia nut, coffee and avocado trees. You are welcome to share in the bounty when the fruit (or the vegetables in our organic garden) are in season. Unlike many farm-like settings in Hawaii, we keep no roosters on the property. There is a gas grill on the back lanai for your use. Also in the back of the house, surrounded by a trellis and lush greenery for privacy, is our out-door shower with hot water! This is a wonderful first stop when you return home from the beach.

Central Location: We are just 8 minutes to Kona town with its restaurants and nightlife, and 5 minutes from Costco, directly above some of the best coastline on the island: Honokohau Harbor and National Park, and the Pine Trees surf break. The airport is 12 minutes the other direction, and beyond it is gorgeous Kua Bay, recently voted one of the Top 10 beaches in the USA. Sporting the best boogie boarding, body surfing, and frolicking on the Island, Kua is just 15 minutes away.

Don't spend your vacation stuck in traffic! Getting back our house from the beach is 20 minutes faster than getting back to Kona town because our location gives us traffic-free access to Kua and all the kick’n Kohala beaches (Kua, Kukio, Beach 69, Hapuna and Mauna Kea) as well as Waimea, which is just 35 minutes from home. The Waipio Valley overlook is 75 minutes. Hilo is just over an hour via the recently completed Saddle Road Hwy. Captain Cook and points south (Green Sand Beach, Southpoint, and Volcano) can be accessed, avoiding the Kona traffic, via the quaint artist town of Holualoa, and the picturesque Mamalahola Highway.

Extra Beds: In addition to those listed above, we have a full size crib, a pac'n play, and 5 queen Aerobeds. (These are very comfortable, bed height with headboard, and can be set up in any room).

Bedroom Descriptions:

The Master Suite is nearly 500 sq ft and boasts panoramic ocean views, stained glass windows, cathedral ceilings, and a jetted tub surrounded by screened windows, creating the feeling of taking a bath in the forest canopy.

Bedroom Suites #2 and #3 are each the size of an ordinary master bedroom with en suite full bath with tub, 18 ft ceilings and a loft. The mauka (mountain side) suite (#2) has French doors opening onto the garden and is outfitted with twin bunk beds, a queen bed, and a twin in the loft. It is a mirror image of the makai (ocean side) suite except the latter has a king (and a queen in the loft) and its own private balcony with ocean views.

Downstairs is a 1000 sq foot studio apartment outfitted with a queen bed and a full size crib in the alcove and a California king and a twin in the main space.

Even the studio has ocean views from its picture window and two large lanais. With its own kitchen, entrance and a door directly into the main house, the studio is a perfect space for the in-laws or a second family that is part of your group.

Food Preparation: The primary kitchen is well stocked, has space for 4-5 people to work together, and is integrated into the Great Room. It has three sinks, over 8 square meters of granite counter space, cutting boards, dishwasher and other stainless steel appliances, a Vitamix blender, and everything else a foodie needs to grill, bake, or wok delicious meals. (There is also a kitchen with a full size fridge in the studio.) In the back of the house is a lanai with a gas grill. This lanai is also our favorite place to breakfast since it catches the morning rays.

Jurassic Park: On a hot afternoon, a great way to cool down is to drive two miles straight up our street (Kaloko Drive) into the Cloud Forest. There you will find some of the best hiking trails on the island, including one which was used for scenes in the movie Jurassic Park. The House Manual includes detailed instructions on how to find our favorite hikes, most of which you will not find in any guidebook!

Equipment: Beach and bath towels, all linens, hair dryer, shampoo/conditioner, boogie boards, two beginner surfboards and a new standup paddle board (SUP)!, beach chairs, and coolers are available for use free of charge. Surfers, paddle surfers, bikers (road or mountain) inquire with us about where to surf or bike. We can also arrange a surfing lesson for beginners or experts (with a top professional), or just point you to where the waves are breaking.

Adventure: There is no place on earth like the Big Island of Hawaii, and we chose this house because it is the perfect base for exploring it. You are welcome to borrow from our library of guide books, and we are happy to share our recommendations for the best beaches and hikes, the best places to snorkel with dolphins in the wild, where to eat and shop in Kona, and other little known secrets. From here you can day trip to other parts of the Island...to the wild coast near Hawi, the rugged jungle and spectacular waterfalls of the Hamakua coast and Waipio Valley, and, of course, the unparalleled Volcanoes National Park.

Why Allyson and Andrei chose Kona Coast

The Big Island is a BIG place, and we chose this house largely because of it's perfect central location with easy, traffic-free access to the airport (12 minutes), Kona (8 minutes), Costco (5 minutes), and the best beach (15 minutes). We are one of the closest upscale neighborhoods to Kua Bay (15 minutes), recently rated the top beach on the Big Island and one of the top 10 beaches in the USA!

The recently opened Saddle Road Hwy gets you from our house to the Hilo (wet) side in just over an hour.

What makes this house unique

We love our super private lot; you can't see our neighbors and they can't see you. The house itself is pretty amazing, lovingly constructed in redwood and ceder with a HUGE open Great Room. But many guests say their favorite thing about our house is the climate: at 1600 ft we enjoy cool nights, warm days, and just enough moisture to keep everything green.

Perfect house in paradise!

We stayed at Allyson & Andrei's home for the week of our wedding with 14 of our closest friends and family and it was perfect! From the very beginning of our booking, our hosts were communicative and answered our every question. The guide that they've written about the house and things to do on the island is incredible and helped us plan our whole week.

We loved how spacious the house was and that it slept so many people! They are not kidding when they say it fits large groups. We loved cooking dinner and hanging out on the back deck with the fire pit at night. The location is above the town of Kona, about a 10 minute drive, so it stays very cool during the day and at night which was so nice to come back to after a hot day at the beach. If you're asking yourself if you need to bring towels, snorkel gear, boogie boards, etc - they have it all, and plenty of them!! We had plenty of coolers, chairs and everything we needed for our days out.

The house had a wonderful kitchen with nice appliances and all bathrooms had soap and toiletries there for us. We felt like we were in our own home immediately! And the views from the front porch - absolutely amazing. The photos in this listing do not do it justice!!

If you are thinking about staying here - do it! It will be one of the highlights of your vacation on the Big Island. Thank you Allyson & Andrei for having us! We can't wait to come back :)

Perfect for a large group!

This was our 2nd year renting the Straumanis House for our large group and it proved to be an equally splendid experience, again!!! The house is equipped with all the amenities needed (e.g. beach towels, laundry soap, basic kitchen necessities) to make the stay carefree and comfortable. If issues do arise, the house manager, Monika, is prompt, helpful, and resolves any concerns immediately. This is a huge relief when managing a large group!!! Beautiful, amazing living space amid gorgeous trees and natural environments!

We had a wonderful time staying here. Our youngest son got married on the island and we all stayed in the house and were able to visit and share meals when we weren't out exploring the island!

The kitchen was well equipped and the many different outdoor gathering areas were wonderful as well!

Perfect for a Group - Tons of Beach Gear!!

We have taken several trips to Kona and never stayed in a home with such a surplus of beach gear - we saved hassle with packing and money on rentals! Tons of beach towels, a big shade tent, an umbrella, enough snorkel gear for a small army, paddle board, boogie boards, etc. We were thrilled. Also a good place for families with a high chair, cribs and a pack and play. The outdoor space is AMAZING with foliage all around and HUGE avocado trees - we had more guacamole than we could eat. One lanai with two big tables accommodated our big group for meals and games and the back lanai had a lovely fire pit for evening star gazing. Really an amazing rental.

One note - although the add lists five bedrooms, it's really three individual bedrooms with two "rooms" separated by a curtain. Works for kids or close friends, but was a bit disappointing for our couples :)

Owner's Response: I'm so glad you enjoyed the house and gear. We love setting up the folding tables for a exquisite sit-down meal at the beach. Thanks for your feedback about the alcove bedroom (Bedroom #5). It used to be walled off from the studio mainspace (Bedroom #4), and each has their own private entrance to the bathroom...so the house truly has 5 bedrooms...but we discovered that taking down the wall and putting up a thick curtain that goes almost but not all the way to the floor dramatically improved airflow. We are big proponents of airflow, and during the night the cool mountain air flows into the large low window at the back of the alcove, across the floor under the curtain and out through the windows at the front of the mainspace. We considered putting vents along the bottom of the wall but decided it would not be very different from the curtain in terms of sound privacy, and we opted for the curtain since it gave the possibility of full retraction to enjoy the expansiveness of the studio mainspace during the day. We placed the alcove bed around the corner from the mainspace bed to maximize the privacy, and to augment it further we placed a high-end white noise machine in the room. It looks like an alien spaceship (and sounds a bit like one too). I wonder if the couple staying in that room didn't notice it or realize what it was. I hope the setup did not interfere too much with their enjoyment of the space. It came about as a result of compromising a bit of sound privacy for really good airflow. Now it is actually our favorite bed and we sometimes stay down there ourselves since it is the coolest room in the house. Thank you again for your kind words and feedback.

Hawaiian Vacation Jan. 26th Thru Jan. 31st 2017 ..... Family of 16 including 2 infants & 2 Toddlers!

Our stay here was exactly as promised; by the end of our first day of vacation we were already calling it "Home"! We are a Family of 16 including 2 infants and 2 toddlers and the sleeping arrangements fit our needs perfectly. Our adult children and grandchildren used the bedrooms on the lower level which worked perfectly for afternoon naps for the children. My husband and myself used the master bedroom on the main level adjacent to the dining and family room area. We set up 1 airbed in the TV area of the main room. Each of us had our privacy and each of the bedrooms had personal bathrooms. One of our favorite times of the day was waking up to "Henry" the Rooster at dawn and gathering in the main kitchen area for coffee and breakfast.

We arrived in Kona at 1:00 am (Extremely Tired) but the location of this beautiful home from the airport was not at all difficult to locate. Just as described it was approximately 3.5 miles straight up the hill. Our first morning there we located a Wal mart and Safeway to stock the cupboards; shopping and restaurants in the area were very easy to find.

We really enjoyed the Kona Farmers Market which was located on Alii Dr. in the center of Really Fun Shopping and right next to the ocean. We also experienced a Fantastic Luau at the "Royal Kona Resort". We highly recommend the Luau and "Hapuna Beach State Recreation" ....... BEAUTIFUL Sandy BEACH about 30 min away! If time permits we would also recommend driving to the other side of the island. The vegetation and ocean views surrounding Hilo were absolutely amazing.

Isn't it wonderful how the cool mountain air is preserved down there all day. Thanks for letting us know about the rooster. We don't own any chickens or roosters and the one you heard must have been an escapee from the folks down the road. We will get him back home right away as roosters are a pet peeve of ours.
