Situated at the end of a long private drive, you have complete privacy. You can't see any neighbors or the street, but you can see miles and miles of sumptuous blue ocean.

There are many different spaces for relaxing and enjoying the peace and quiet. A large group can spread out and not see much of each other or gather in the great room for a banquet or a polka!

VIRTUAL TOUR: The folks who sold us this house produced a very nice virtual tour. The 'pano' shots give you 360 degree views of most parts of the house. Of course, it shows the house with their furniture, but except for the studio (which they used as an office), we have made similar choices about furniture placement. Natural Air Conditioning: We are at a perfect 1600 ft (500m) elevation, with expansive ocean and coastline views. Folks who live 300 ft below us are in the lava desert where they need air conditioning many nights; homes 300 ft above us are in the cloud forest where you don't get direct sunlight some days. Here, the cool nights are a wonderful contrast to the warm sunny days. The temperature is just chilly enough most nights to want a light blanket, but warms into the 70’s by about 9am. Mosquitoes are never a problem. Eat dinner on the front lanai with a commanding view of the ocean and the sunset 365 days a year.

The Grounds: Our house is situated well off the street at the end of a long driveway in a very private 1.5 acre lot filled with banana, papaya, macadamia nut, coffee and avocado trees. You are welcome to share in the bounty when the fruit (or the vegetables in our organic garden) are in season. There is a gas grill on the back lanai for your use. Also in the back of the house, surrounded by a trellis and lush greenery for privacy, is our out-door shower with hot water! This is a wonderful first stop when you return home from the beach. It's private enough that some groups use the outdoor shower as the "guys" shower.

Central Location: We are just 8 minutes to Kona town with its restaurants and nightlife, and 5 minutes from Costco, directly above some of the best coastline on the island: Honokohau Harbor and National Park, and the Pine Trees surf break. The airport is 12 minutes the other direction, and beyond it is gorgeous Kua Bay, recently voted one of the Top 10 beaches in the USA. Sporting the best boogie boarding, body surfing, and frolicking on the Island, Kua is just 15 minutes away.

Don't spend your vacation stuck in traffic! Getting back our house from the beach is 20 minutes faster than getting back to Kona town because our location gives us traffic-free access to Kua and all the kick’n Kohala beaches (Kua, Kukio, Beach 69, Hapuna and Mauna Kea) as well as Waimea, which is just 35 minutes from home. The Waipio Valley overlook is 75 minutes. Hilo is just over an hour via the recently completed Saddle Road Hwy. Captain Cook and points south (Green Sand Beach, Southpoint, and Volcano) can be accessed, avoiding the Kona traffic, via the quaint artist town of Holualoa, and the picturesque Mamalahola Highway.

Extra Beds: In addition to those listed above, we have a pac'n play, and 5 queen Aerobeds. (These are very comfortable, bed height with headboard, and can be set up in any room).

Bedroom Descriptions:

The Grand Master Suite is nearly 500 sq ft and boasts panoramic ocean views, stained glass windows, cathedral ceilings, and a jetted tub surrounded by screened windows, creating the feeling of taking a bath in the forest canopy.

The Mauka (mountain view) and Makai (ocean view) Master Bedroom Suites each have en suite full bath with tub and shower, 18 ft ceilings and a loft. The Mauka Master Suite has French doors opening onto the garden and is outfitted with a twin bunk beds, and a queen bed, plus a bonus twin in the loft. It is a mirror image of the Makai Master Suite except the latter has a king size bed, its own private balcony with ocean views, and a queen bed in the loft.

Downstairs is the 1000 sq foot Studio Mainspace, plus the Studio Alcove bedroom. The Mainspace is outfitted with a California king bed and twin bed, a pool and ping pong table, and a full size fridge. The Alcove has a queen bed and a full size crib, and its own entrance to a bathroom (shared with the studio main space). There is plenty of floor space where one or more AeroBeds can be set up. We also have a full size cot and pac'n play, available upon request which can be placed in any room.

The Mainspace has ocean views from its picture window and two large covered lanais (which can be used as sleeping porches, if desired). With its own exterior entrance and a door directly into the main house, the studio is a perfect space for the in-laws or a second family that is part of your group.

Food Preparation: The primary kitchen is well stocked, has space for 4-5 people to work together, and is integrated into the Great Room. It has three sinks, over 8 square meters of granite counter space, cutting boards, dishwasher and other stainless steel appliances, a Vitamix blender, and everything else a foodie needs to grill, bake, or wok delicious meals. (There is also a kitchen with a full size fridge in the studio.) In the back of the house is a lanai with a gas grill. This lanai is also our favorite place to breakfast since it catches the morning rays.

Jurassic Park: Drive two miles straight up our street (Kaloko Drive) to the Cloud Forest. There you will find some of the best hiking trails on the island, including one which was used for scenes in the movie Jurassic Park. The House Manual includes detailed instructions on how to find our favorite hikes, most of which you will not find in any guidebook!

Equipment: Beach and bath towels, all linens, hair dryer, shampoo/conditioner, boogie boards, two beginner surfboards and a new standup paddle board (SUP)!, beach chairs, and coolers are available for use free of charge. Surfers, paddle surfers, bikers (road or mountain) inquire with us about where to surf or bike. We can also arrange a surfing lesson for beginners or experts (with a top professional), or just point you to where the waves are breaking.

Adventure: There is no place on earth like the Big Island of Hawaii, and we chose this house because it is the perfect base for exploring it. You are welcome to borrow from our library of guide books, and we are happy to share our recommendations for the best beaches and hikes, the best places to snorkel with dolphins in the wild, where to eat and shop in Kona, and other little known secrets. From here you can day trip to other parts of the the wild coast near Hawi, the rugged jungle and spectacular waterfalls of the Hamakua coast and Waipio Valley, and, of course, the unparalleled Volcanoes National Park.

About Allyson and Andrei

We love exploring our Island and are happy to share its secrets with guests. Before we moved to Kona, we lived in Seattle, Charleston (SC), Albuquerque, Minneapolis, Ohio, Florida, Boston, Philadelphia, and the Bay Area (CA) so we have been around and can say with confidence that Hawaii is the BEST!

Why Allyson and Andrei chose Kailua-Kona

The Big Island is a BIG place, and we chose this house largely because of it's perfect central location with easy, traffic-free access to the airport (12 minutes), Kona (8 minutes), Costco (5 minutes), and the best beach (15 minutes). We are one of the closest upscale neighborhoods to Kua Bay (15 minutes), recently rated the top beach on the Big Island and one of the top 10 beaches in the USA!

The recently opened Saddle Road Hwy gets you from our house to the Hilo (wet) side in just over an hour.

What makes this house unique

We love our super private lot; you can't see our neighbors and they can't see you. The house itself is pretty amazing, lovingly constructed in redwood and ceder with a HUGE open Great Room. But many guests say their favorite thing about our house is the climate: at 1600 ft we enjoy cool nights, warm days, and just enough moisture to keep everything green.

An amazing home that was perfect for our family. It was more than we expected

We would recommend this home for anyone who is planning a vacation to the Big Island. The setting is beautiful with great views both oceanside or mountainside. We liked being up the mountain away from the city congestion but easy access to the city of Kona and airport. We were a family of 16 ages 7-13 grandkids and ages 45-74 adults. The home is beautiful inside and out with lots of space for family gatherings. The kitchen is amazing and so well equipped. Great library for all ages including many games. The grounds are a nature lovers dream with so many tropical fruits to enjoy. The home is also well equipped with beach gear to enjoy the many nearby beaches. Our trip was a celebration for several special birthdays and a special anniversary. We appreciated all the personal suggestions of things to do. The memories we made and shared will be with us all forever. Thank you for sharing your home and making our stay so comfortable and enjoyable.

Nice big house and great stay

The property was huge and really worth the charge. It was clean and spacious. We had a great time staying there. One of the best holiday houses we've stayed in. We had 9 people travelling together and the house was able to fit another 9 of us. Really worth renting for your holiday.

Andrei could not have been more accommodating to the 9 of us after a horrible stay in other location

This home has room for 24 with 4 bedrooms each with a bath. Other beds are stategically placed within the home to accommodate your large group. The kitchen is massive and you can easily prepare meals for a large party. Many extras to use for traveling to beaches are readily available. Was extremely nice to have s large capacity washer to do laundry because our group played in a softball tournament during the week. We unexpectedly arrived on a Tuesday and his staff had everything perfect for our arrival. We greatly appreciated his willingness to allow us to view the property before we booked due to the disastrous initial VRBO rental we experienced. Unfortunately I don’t think I will ever book through VRBO again but if you trust the process this is an amazing find.

Good private location central to a lot of things

We spent ten days at this location with a large college group on an academic trip and had destinations all over the island from Volcanoes National Park to downtown Kona to coffee farms to Waimea. It was nice that his location was so central to everything and that it was especially close to the airport, downtown, and Costco. We also really appreciated all of the provided beach gear (snorkels, boogie boards, chairs etc). The kitchen and grill were perfect to make meals for a crowd especially with Costco so close. Would certainly stay here again!

Unique "luxury in a jungle setting" perfect for large groups

Overall: House is truly special and a wonderful setting for a group of 8-12 (more if folks share beds; our group had only 8 sleep there due to house rules about paying extra for more guests). It's "in the hills" but not more than 15 minutes to beaches, close to Costco (best food shopping on the island), and fruit trees abound in the backyard. Overall a very good value for money and a unique experience

Check-in: super easy, Andrei's instructions are very clear and easy to follow

Space: feels like a vacation house not a "normal" house, with huge open spaces that could host a floor hockey game. Lots of bedrooms with various sizes, full laundry room, kitchen with every thinkable implement, outdoor grill and even some fruit you can pick and eat off trees in the backyard. Easy parking for 3-4 cars. Tons of windows, decks and constant "airflow" . Temperature never too hot or cold, great climate for sleeping

Amenities: plenty of games, paddle boards, boogie boards, etc.

Kona home away from home!

We had a group of 9 adults staying for 5 nights in Kona. As the trip organizer, I gave the group the option of booking rooms in a hotel or booking this house. The decision was unanimous and immediate. Not only is this a rare find in that everyone fit comfortably, with plenty of rooms and bathrooms (other rentals in the area may have the rooms, but not the bathrooms), it's a beautiful, lush property. We enjoyed breakfasts and some "pau hana" time on the lanai as a group almost every day, and there was still plenty of space for folks to find a quiet corner to themselves whenever they wanted. This house has the plus of being higher in elevation than others so it always stayed comfortably cool. (Note to new Hawaii visitors: a lot of places won't have AC and it's often not needed, but it can get a little uncomfortable when it's really hot. Not the case in this house!) Andrei leaves the house stocked with everything a group would need - well stocked linens, pantry items, beach chairs, etc. He and Monika are super easy to work with and also very accessible/responsive. I can go on and on, but much of what I would say has already been pointed out in other reviews. Wonderful, wonderful place!
