About Berenice Parsons

The property was purchased in 1979. In 2003 I donated the old cabin to CAL Fire for a training exercise. The Vista House is my new replacement home and was completed in early 2005. It sits on the old cabin site and has a spectacular view of the mountains, fields, pond and valley. I am please to share with my guests the abundant natural beauty of this unique setting where I live in harmony with the land, the animals and nature.

Why Berenice Parsons chose Central Coast California

The Vista House is my second vacation rental at Rock Basin. The Windmill House (#40846 on vrbo site) was so well received by vacationers, I decided to open the Vista House to guests, too. Both homes provide clean, modern conveniences in a quiet, rural setting that is a short 20 minute commute to downtown San Luis Obispo.

What makes this house unique

The beautiful and peaceful Las Pilitas Valley affords visitors a chance to really get away from 'it'. Nature is as close as a step outside with deer, coyotes, bobcats, turkeys, hawks, herons and a multitude of birds of every variety in abundance. Our rosy sunsets and starry nights are spectacular! The area is very popular with bicyclists because of the mountainous terrain and quiet country roads. Guestbook comments from the owner

Sometimes in San Luis Obispo County you can sleep in a vineyard, or at least next to it. Such is the case at Rock Basin Vineyards & Guest Homes in Santa Margarita, located off a vista-rich country road along which you can buy fresh eggs. A delightful retreat, you get an entire house to yourself, but you can wander the property, visit with the animals or just sit by the pond and watch the meadow grass ripple in the wind.

Wonderful pkace, Great location. Owner was very friendly and welcoming.

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time. The house was very clean and had pots and pans and all the utensils we needed. There was also s bbq grill that we could use and the owner provided the charcoal and lighter fluid. The owner's dogs were very friendly. My kids loved spending time with them. We also stargazed at night. It was amazing! We saw the Milky Way and a couple of planets. We also saw quite a few shooting stars.

Morro Bay was just 30 minutes away. Overall, we had a great time and I would love to go there again.

Owner's Response: Monica and Family: Thanks so much for your review and for letting me know that you and your large family enjoyed your time at The Vista House. Although the location is rural countryside, it's just a short commute to the beaches and towns and mountains. Morro Bay was a good choice for your family to do some shopping, sight seeing and sea otter spotting. Perhaps next visit you can rent one of the little electric boats (they hold up to eight passengers) and go out on the bay to see the sea otters up close and explore the calm inner waters back to Baywood Park. There is just so much to do here it impossible to fit into one trip. The dogs, Penny and Dotty and I look forward to seeing you all back again soon.

Secluded, immaculate, value convenient to SLO and beaches

  • 5 of 5

This property provided everything we needed for a weekend getaway in SLO. The house is off the beaten path in a quiet, pastoral area, yet within an easy 30 minute drive of SLO and beaches. Furnishings are simple but more than adequate for our family of five. Berenice keeps the place spotless, provided free locally roasted coffee, and gave fantastic instructions. If we come back to the area we would love to stay here again. Also, definitely go ziplining with Santa Margarita Adventures nearby!

Loved it

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I loved this property. The house was spacious and incredibly clean and quiet. It sits in this little valley out in the country where you are removed from the hustle and bustle of city life. Every morning I would get up earlier then my wife and go out with my coffee and sit on the patio and just relax. Dottie and Penny (the property watchdogs) would come see me most mornings and insist on being petted and attention paid to them, and when they didn't show up it was disappointing. Bernice the owner obviously takes pride in her properties, you could see it in just the little things about the property. To the awesome cleanliness of the house, the cards for free wine-tasting, the bottle of wine left in the refrigerator and even to the décor of the house. We had a relaxing time there and plan on coming back again just as soon as possible. If you are looking for a house away from the bustle of the city, out in the country this house deserves your consideration. We HIGHLY recommend it.

Owner's Response: M&L: I am so pleased to hear that you enjoyed your anniversary stay at the Vista House. To get travelers to venture 10 minutes off the highway 101 corridor is a challenge, but for travelers likr yourselves who brave to be different, there are some very wonderful places, like my homes, where travelers can truly relax, kick back and chill out. My collection of complimentary wine cards for local wineries is growing constantly so guest now have a variety of wine styles and location for tastings. As for the cleanliness of the house, my housekeeper, Rosie and I work together to be sure the homes well stocked with paper products, coffee & filters, foil, spices etc. My country location will never be ocean view or walking distance to theaters or restaurants, but I can give my guests a beautiful location, a super clean and well maintained home and a pair of very friendly dogs who enjoy interacting with people. Penny, Dotty and I look forward to having you both back again soon for your next visit.

Calm and Comfy

  • 5 of 5

The property is surrounded by scenic beauty that takes you aback. It is definitely a perfect getaway if all you want to experience is calm and comfort. Kids loved the place and were so excited to run around the property. House was very clean, spacious enough and the two bedrooms had comfortable beds. We traveled from LA to ghere and the drive was pretty exciting to this place. If you are lucky enough you could do some wild life spotting too .. We just happened to see a Coyote. Two adorable pets Penny and Dotty on the property who are excited on your arrival and the owner said I m gonna hold them inside or they would be upset to see you leave :/ .. We reached the property around 4pm relaxed for a while and enjoyed the charcoal bbq with Berenice . We left to Hearst castle the next day , an hour drive from there and the elephant seal situated closely to Hearst castle. End of our trip and kids were already not happy about leaving the place. Berenice was very friendly and overall experience was very satisfying.

Owner's Response: Martin and Family: Thank you for your review. I am happy to know that you and your family found Vista House to be all that was advertised and more. I am also glad that you purchased your tickets online to Hearst Castle before your arrival as their tours do sell out quickly during the summer months. The elephant seals, located just up the coastal highway from the Castle, are fun to watch, too. Penny, Dotty and I look forward to your return visit.

Just as I Had Imagined

  • 5 of 5

We spent two nights at Vista House and wish it had been twice that. Berenice "B" is an excellent host, with ultra- quick responses to emails. The house was very clean, simply furnished, and included most everything we needed.

We walked the road the evening we arrived, and enjoyed the peace and quiet. Only two cars passed us during our 40 minute walk! We ate two meals at Southern Station in Santa Margarita (highly recommend the omelets) though preparing a meal at the Vista House would have been easy enough. B provided us with several vouchers for free wine tasting. We enjoyed two tasting rooms in Paso Robles. The Shale Oak is impressive in its sustainability.

Little things we enjoyed: drinking the delicious local SLO coffee that B provided for the coffee maker, watching the lizards and butterflies on the patio with not a single other person in sight, watching our DVD's in the bedroom, and using the ipod dock.

A great property to relax and recharge!

Owner's Response: Karen: I am so pleased to hear the Vista House provided you and your friend a quiet escape from your busy lives in the LA area. Although the Vista House is only 10 minutes from Highway 101 and 20 minutes from downtown San Luis Obispo, it seems as if you have stepped back in time to when the pace of life was slow and simple. I'm glad to hear you were able to make use of some of the complimentary wine tasting card I provide for all guests over 21 years old. I have a variety of cards for wineries in both the Paso Robles and San Luis Obispo AVA. For travelers who prefer beer, we have a thriving brewing industry in the County with Dunbar Brewing operating in nearby Santa Margarita. I look forward to your return visit soon.

Quiet but Central

  • 5 of 5

Stayed for a month. Was looking for a place to get away from it all yet close to fun things to do, and this was the perfect mix. The house was very comfortable and surrounded by lots of trees and open fields, yet only about 20 minutes from downtown San Luis Obispo (SLO). Some of the nearby fun we did included some great dining on Higuera Street in SLO and the Thursday SLO farmers market, enjoying the lovely town of Arroyo Grande (about 30 minutes south), hiking up Valencia Peak in Los Ossos (also about 30 minutes away), walking on the beach at Moro Rock, and catching a live banjo show at a small cafe in Santa Margarita (which reminds me of a small town from an old western movie).

The house was very well kept and the manager was super nice. If you're looking for somewhere quiet in a beautiful setting but close to things to do, it's hard to beat this place.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review and for including some of the things you found interesting to do while you where here for a month. The Central Coast has so very much for visitors to experience from hiking on beaches and trails to daily and even nightly Farmer's Markets to restaurants offering of a world wide variety of cuisines. The Vista House is situated close to all that San Luis Obispo County has to offer. It's far enough off the main roads to be in the quiet of the countryside, yet only 20 minutes from downtown San Luis Obispo (SLO). I look forward to having you back again soon.
