The VT getaway is an 8 acre farmhouse estate with architect-designed additions to the original 1840 home. Enjoy skiing at nearby Sugarbush and Mad River Glen, fall foliage, mountain views, extensive bike and hiking trails nearby, tennis on our private court, swimming in tepool, dinner and grilling in the back porch. A pond on one side of the property and stream on the other are pleasant features. The house offers two wood burning fireplaces located in the large open kitchen and living room and a year round outdoor hot tub. Great for families, gatherings of friends and couples. We are not a typical rental with regular availability, as this is our family's vacation home, so each season we rent only a few long weekends or for up to 2 weeks on ocassion.
The main home has 7 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms. Bedrooms are set up the following way: #1(King), #2 (Full) #3 (2 Singles -- cannot be made into a king) #4 (Queen plus 2 singles) #5 (Single plus short Full) #6 (Single) #7 (Single plus child bed). An additional queen bed is available in another section of the home in the guest suite at an additional $100 per night.
The large cook's kitchen is complete with a 6 burner Viking stove, two ovens, two Bosch dishwashers and two Sub Zero refrigerators. There is a long refectory dining table and additional table and island allow a variety of seating options and views. Large bay windows in the kitchen/dining room look out to lawn and mountains. There is a large fireplace in the kitchen/dining area.
There are four separate well-appointed, comfortable living room areas on the main floor – the family room with a large flat screen TV, digital cable with HD features, and DVD player; the living room with a wood burning fireplace, wrap around couch and stereo system; the billiard/games room with a pool table and a door leading out to the hot tub; and an office/seating area with a desk, comfortable couch and period piece piano. The first floor bathroom has a full bath/steam shower and separate dressing room.
The front entryway to the main home has ample storage for coats and ski gear. The washer and dryer units are conveniently located on the first floor of the home. The driveway parks up to six cars. The heated garage has a ping pong table, some work out equipment including weights, exercise balls and yoga mats.
The home is set back from the road on 8 acres, surrounded by mountains and farmland. It has a pond with seasonal wildlife including ducks, heron and wild turkey. A wide brook runs the length of the property and feeds into the Mad River. An open air fire pit is next to the brook and the tennis court at the end of the expansive back yard has an enclosed seating/viewing cabin. The large lawn is ideal for croquet or badminton; two outdoor basketball hoops make for easy pick-up games. The property is planted with pear, apple and plum trees, blueberry, strawberry and raspberry bushes.
The furnished outdoor spaces include a side deck with tables and chairs; a lounge area near the hot tub, and ample space around the pool. The screened in porch has a gas grill, a dining table, wicker couches and chairs. The entire pool area is brick and gets great light throughout the day. At dusk, the sun sets toward the back of the property, making the pool or screened in porch a lovely afternoon and evening setting.

Our family has owned this beautiful home for 16 years. Originally from the New England area, we have four grown children who have lived in many parts of the country but always feel drawn back to Vermont. The Waitsfield area is a wonderful place to visit any time of year.
We bought the house because of its unique combination of luxury amenities such as the pool, hot tub, tennis court, grilling porch, sleeping capacity –authentic features including the original 1840 wood burning fireplaces and wood floors, area views, fruit trees, pond and stream, and easy access to year round recreation, from cross country skiing to downhill at Mad River Glen and Sugarbush Mountains, both 15 minutes drives from the house, to kayaking, road and mountain biking, hiking, fishing, and more.
While you’re here, it’s easy to eat every meal at home with the Viking stove to cook on and the two ovens to keep food warming. You can also head into town to the original home of American Flatbread Pizza (now sold in Whole Foods), and other charming restaurants. Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream Factory in Stowe is about a 25 minute drive away.
Martha Jackson purchased this farmhouse in 1997
The Mad River Valley is a beautiful, charming and historic area. There are adventures year round, as shows in this feature in the New York Times travel section (use their website search to find the story and photographs). From hiking the Long Trail and mountain biking country roads in the summer to fall foliage and summer through autumn farmers markets, to skiing in the winter, it's a gorgeous place to get away with family, friends or colleagues.
Our property is nestled into Green Mountain area farmland and wilderness, providing a quiet retreat yet only 2 1/2 miles to the Old Village of Waitsfield. There are many activities to choose from at our vacation home -- ping pong, pool, the hot tub, country walks, and bike rides from the property. The area features kayaking, snowshoeing and cross country skiing, and fly fishing just minutes away.
My 3 adult kids and their spouses, along with their five kids ranging from ages 2-8, decided to take me for a week long birthday getaway to this generous, congenial and beautiful property, the week between Christmas and New Years.
We could not have had a more marvelous time, in large part due to the gracious accommodations, designed for comfort, connection, and luxury without pretense..The kitchen is simply extraordinary and designed for what everyone loves to do best: hang out, talk, cook, laugh and eat well. We loved the hot tub, the pool table, the ping pong table, the fireplaces, the grounds, the views, the room to spread out or to gather. Additionally, the local skiing was delightful and user-friendly compared to other venues we've experienced, and the townspeople and shop owners in and around Waitsfield were lovely..
Our hosts went beyond expectations with answering our questions, and the property, inside and out, was beautifully maintained and impeccably organized. .
What a nourishing experience this was! Every one of us relished our stay. I would and will recommend it to friends and relatives, and will hope to return with my family some time in the future. .
We had a wonderful time last winter. This home is perfect for a ski weekend and the owners are a delight to work with, making sure we had all the information we needed beforehand and very accessible to answer questions. The home is a a perfect combination of holding a large group while still being extremely cozy and comfortable. When not on the mountain we spent most of our time in the kitchen/dining area cooking, playing cards, hanging out by the fire and enjoying the views. As with most homes, the kitchen tends to be a central place for people to gather and this one lives up to all expectations, comfortably holding our whole group for meals. Everyone was raving about the home and sad to leave (we still talk aout how great it was). We couldn't have asked for a better place to stay and hope to be back.
A perfect place to have a family reunion. I enjoyed being able to have dinner at the kitchen table for 15 followed by board games while others liked the screened porch area for gathering during and after a busy day of swimming (pool, hot tub, brook), whiffle ball, tennis and billiard games. There is enough to keep you busy on the property you hardly have to leave. Where else can seven cousins ranging in age from 12 to 22 stay together for a week without getting in each others way? The owners couldn't have been easier to work with. They answered all our questions before and during our stay. This was our first VBRO experience but won't be our last!
I chose this property for a week-long family vacation and could not have been happier. The Waitsfield/Mad River area is full of bountiful and bucolic farms, delicious cuisine, fabulous biking, hiking and other outdoor adventures. But this property is also so complete that you don't even need to leave the house to have a fabulous time.
It's clear that the owners love this home and take great care to make it comfortable for everyone who stays there. They were incredibly generous with answers to all our questions before our trip, including details about room layout and directions to local events. They installed multiple air conditioning units before we arrived, since it was already shaping up to be a hot summer, even for Vermont. The house itself is beautiful, spacious, charming, comfortable, and extremely well-organized with all the equipment and supplies you need for a relaxing holiday. And the grounds are grand! Our 2-year-old reveled in the pool and the brook, loved the paddle boat on the pond (and the frogs who live there), and ran around to his heart's content picking berries from the bushes planted on the property.
We have rented several other homes through VRBO but never had such a wonderful experience as this. We would recommend this property without reservation and hope to return to it ourselves in the years to come.
We really enjoyed our stay. Only wished we had more time to spend there. Cozy house, lots of room, various amenities, activities, organized, well maintained, and situated in beautiful Vermont. We enjoyed cooking in the well appointed kitchen. Owner was very helpful, cordial, and accommodating with our questions and concerns. Check out the nearby restaurant "The Big Picture" for good food in a casual setting, part of a movie theatre. Our stay was in a winter wonderland as we were blessed with bountiful snow, but I'm sure summers here are equally wonderful.
Stayed at this home for a long weekend recently with my family and 2 other families. This rental was everything you could ask for and then some. The kitchen was complete with every pot/pan/plate/dish/glass/ gadget you could imagine. The bedrooms were comfy, the linens and towels in wonderful condition and every little detail was thought of. There were tissues, and napkins and tin foil etc. The owners clearly care about this home and have thought of every way to make it a comfortable and welcoming place. Really an amazing experience and also a great location to the Ski mountains and town.
