THE PERFECT house for a large family, or several families to share!! Designed by NYC architect, and built for several generations of his own family, this house is designed for both fun and relaxation. The concept was to build a luxury cabin in the woods, and the end product is a series of modern cabin-like structures that are loosely connected by glass and stone passageways that evoke the feeling of passing through the outside, without ever leaving the comforts of home.
Less than two miles from Tanglewood, this house has a fantastic location for whatever your interests are in the Berkshires, whether they be outdoors or in.
If you rent this home in summer, you will have rights to the private and lovely Beachwood Beach, and you will have free, unlimited use of the owners canoe, kayak, and the neccessary accessories like life jackets, oars etc.... in addition to the endless choice of activities all over the area. If you are renting the house in winter, and can drag yourself away from the fireplace, you will be close to Butternut, Bousquet, and Jiminy Peak alpine ski areas, as well as endless X-Country trails. Fall is perfect for leaf-peeping, hiking and exploring the amazing small towns dotting the entire county.
Hang out and enjoy the peace and quiet, or fill your day to the brim with all that is available in the four unique seasons of the Berkshires.
The first, main building houses the Great Room, Dining, Kitchen, Breakfast Nook, Mudroom, and Laundry Room. Anchored by a masonry stone fireplace this space is the heart of the home. The modern kitchen with stainless steel appliances is fully equipped for whatever cooking you have in mind. Off of the kitchen is a small deck with table and chairs, as well as a gas grill. Outside the Great Room double doors is a courtyard created by the placement of the cabins. It includes another small seating area and a beautifully landscaped surround. From every room in the house, you will see the lawn and gardens which meld into the woods beyond.
Another cabin houses the Master bedroom, with king sized bed, and his/hers separate bathrooms. 'Hers' has a jacuzzi tub, 'his' a stall shower. This is a private and romantic room with views towards the woods.
The third cabin houses two bedrooms each with a queen sized bed, and two full bathrooms, one with a tub and the other with a shower. At the end of this cabin, there is the much loved bunkroom that holds six people, each in a twin sized bed with it's own window and wall sconce for private reading! This is a crowd pleaser of a room for the little ones! Above these three spaces, on the second floor is the media room, which has an L-shaped sofa, flat screen TV, ping pong table, and games area.
Below these bedrooms is the lower level that contains two more bedrooms, with a shared bathroom. One bedroom has a king bed, the other has twins, that could also be made up as a king. The shared bath has a shower and two sinks.
The last cabin houses the garage, and above the garage is a screened porch which can only be described as 'tree-house' like. There is comfortable seating, for reading, napping and also a dining table up on high. It's a very separate area from the rest of the house, and perfect for those looking for a quiet getaway.
The property is 20 acres, and is mostly wooded.

Our family has been spending time in the Berkshires for many years, and in 2000, when this amazing property in the heart of Stockbridge came on the market, we just could not resist the temptation to build our own retreat. We live our 'real' life outside of Manhattan, and access from our area is just as easy as it is from the Boston area, and all of CT. There is something in the Berkshires for everyone, whether you like culture, the outdoors, summer, winter, fall or just sitting by a fire reading and playing games with your family.
We have it all! Biking, hiking, walking, nature preserves, skiing, theatre, music, shopping, antiquing, outlets, craft shows, galleries, spas, you name it!
We just concluded a three generational family reunion for a week at One Mahkeenac. it was delightful. The house was more than a building, but a building that you knew the owners lived in and enjoyed. We enjoyed it too. The location was terrific and the house is comfortable and large enough to accommodate a large family. Lots of amenities you wouldn't expect from a rental and a private location which makes you feel you are living in the woods. Not to mention the nearby beach that is both family family and beautiful. We couldn't have had a better time or a better home to enjoy this beautiful location.
Finding a place which was not only geographically suitable but would also accommodate our large family was a challenge. Red Lion cottages were booked for the 3 day holiday weekend so finding this home was the perfect solution. Just minutes to town, the location is terrific. The house is warm and inviting, with an enormous modern stone hearth where we played many scrabble games and enjoyed late night conversations in front of the fire. We loved the cozy breakfast nook in the kitchen waking up with a cup of coffee and it worked great as extra prep area where people could sit and chat with those that were busy cooking in the kitchen. Bedrooms are plentiful and comfortable and the layout works well for multiple families. We will be returning for another 50th birthday celebration!
After being a bit hesitant to spend a winter week in the Berkshires , with 6 children, ages 10 months to 14 years, and not enough snow to ski, our extended family of 16 , spent a most wonderful time together at this lovely house. We lit a blazing fire in the large fireplace every day, and enjoyed eating meals all together at the harvest table, and playing games and movies in the game room. The bunk room became the inspiration of endless imagination games for the four little girls. They even had spread sheets to determine who slept in which bunk each night. ! The location of the house provided opportunities for woodland treasure hunts, and relaxing walks along the paths. There were charming stores to explore, and so many restaurants to enjoy. We splurged on a delicious dinner for the whole family in a private diningroom at the Red Lion Inn, which was festively decorated for the holidays.
Hillary was the most accommodating owner of this amazing house. I would highly recommend this vacation rental for a perfect accommodation in all seasons of the year. You will not be disappointed !
Everything was perfect about this home: our family (ages 8 months to 94 yrs.) enjoyed all the activity spaces indoors and out, the well-stocked kitchen, the wonderful yard and sitting areas, and the convenience to the Stockbridge Lake (including the use of a canoe and kayak). Owner Hillary was extraordinarily helpful and patient in quickly responding to all our little planning questions. We would all highly recommend this home to anyone who would like to spend a relaxing week in a spacious, super-homey setting. While there, we enjoyed biking on the Ashuwillticook rail trail in Lanesborough, dining at the Bascom Lodge on Mt. Greylock, seeing a play at Shakespeare & Co., visiting the Norman Rockwell Museum and Naumkeag Mansion and Edith Wharton's summer home at The Mount, and eating out at Chez Nous and Sullivan Station in Lee, along with the Red Iron Inn in Stockbridge. And we only scratched the surface of things to do in this area. Would love to return!
My wife and I brought for one week: 1 great grandmother with walker; 3 adult children and one spouse; 5 grandchildren (9 yr to 2 yr). The house was spacious and worked well for everyone. 4 oldest grandchildren enjoyed the bunks. We visited the nearby lake for a little while each day, using the canoe and kayak, sandy beach, and picnic facilities. The kids spent a lot of time on the lovely grounds outside of the house and also made much use of the interior for games, crafts, and hanging out. Car is needed, even to visit the lake. Easy access to Stockbridge, Lenox. We were impressed by the professionalism of the owner in all aspects.
Our family, ages 3 years to 83 years, gathered at this very comfortable 'home'. It is set in a quiet, secluded wooded area. The gorgeous lawn and flowers are beautifully maintained, as is this well designed house.
Hillary has decorated her home with interesting collections and personal items, giving this home warmth. It is adequately stocked with kitchen supplies and linens, even extra air beds. She added personal touches such as picnic baskets for Tanglewood.
There are 2 outdoor tables to congregate for meals, etc as well as the kitchen area and a huge dining table. The game room is supplied with games, ping-pong table, TV and DVD, which was a big hit. Another surprise was a screen porch, totally set apart from the main area of the house, which allowed for a get-away to read, nap or conversation.
Hillary was a gem to work with and easy to contact.
With easy access to Tanglewood, Lenox, Stockbridge, Great Barrington, Lee and the entire Berkshire County, there are countless cultural and outdoor activities to participate in for visitors of any age.
