Pine Island is located 40 miles north of the Tampa Bay area, 70 miles west of Orlando, on the coast of Hernando County. Only one half mile long, it rests between the Gulf of Mexico to the west and the Chassahowitzka Wildlife Management Area to the east, truly a nature lover’s paradise.
“A Place in the Sun”, an old Florida style stilt home, was completely remodeled and redecorated in 2006 with new upscale furnishings, flooring, kitchen and bathrooms. Our beach house is situated on the inland side of Pine Island on a canal overlooking the marsh and bay. The great room, decorated in Tommy Bahama style, has a wood burning fireplace for cool winter nights and a wet bar with an icemaker. The kitchen and dining area open to a large screened porch with a small dining table and seating area. Views of the bay and marsh are some of the most spectacular views of natural Florida you could ever wish to see. The master bedroom is like a Carribean villa with its comfortable rattan bed and fine linens. A balcony off the master suite is perfect for watching the sunrise, reading during the day, or stargazing at night. The master bath has a shower and the hall bath has a tub. Two other bedrooms have queen beds and are tastefully decorated for your guests’ comfort and pleasure. All bedrooms have ceiling fans. Relax in the porch swing on the front porch or go downstairs to lounge in the hammock or enjoy the screened room with a large bar, TV, refrigerator, half bath and dining table. Listen to Jimmy Buffet or your own favorites on the speakers connected to the upstairs stereo. A dock and a 120 foot seawall are great for fishing. Our family has caught redfish and snook and many smaller fish just for fun. The floating dock in the side yard is convenient for tying up the kayaks or docking a small boat. Local guides can take you to catch grouper offshore or trout and redfish inshore. In the late spring or early summer, you can book a guide for world class tarpon fishing. Walk just ¼ mile to Alfred McKethan Park with its beautiful white sand beach and enjoy a 'Cheeseburger in Paradise' at Willy’s Tropical Breeze Café. Just across the street from the house is a small private beach perfect for sunbathing or watching the amazing Florida sunsets.
Wildlife abounds. Great blue herons and white herons are frequent visitors to our docks and seawalls. Eagles and ospreys nest in the area as well as numerous other species of birds. Dolphin and manatees occasionally swim through the canal behind the house. The island even has a few resident peacocks. “A Place in the Sun” is perfect for a couple or family who would like to enjoy the natural beauty of Florida with the convenience of being 1 hour from Tampa, 1½ hours from Clearwater/ St Petersburg and less than 2 hours from the unlimited attractions of the Orlando area.
This was our first time renting a house and first time using VRBO. We were a little tentative at the onset because we are golfers and staying on an island off the beaten path was a deviation from the norm for us. WOW !!! Sure glad we did. What a great vacation spot. Weiland and Carol have thought of everything in this wonderful, meticulous retreat. The view from the screened in porch in the morning and the sunsets across the road are breathtaking. Golfing, Shopping, Restaurants and Sightseeing are all close by making this property a must see for anyone who wants to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Sometimes when you think it cannot get any better it does. This was our fifth year staying at the Pine Island house. Aside from being the cleanest rental we have stayed in, Weiland and Carol keep improving the already perfect place to stay. We always sad to leave and look forward to our next stay.
Thank you, Carol and Weiland for a wonderful vacation. Larry and Jan L.
We just returned from our 2nd year of spending a week at this property. It is such a peaceful and relaxing place, perfect for those seeking to get away from the hubub but still close to places to shop. Kayaking in the canal and marsh were a highlight again this year. Walks on the beach and bike rides were also fun. The house is comfortable, with all we needed. The perfect blend of a getaway while still having modern conveniences like WiFi and cable TV/Netflix. We hope to return again in the future.
This place was great, has a good floor plan. Socializing on the first floor and people can sleep undisturbed on the second. Great sportsman's set up, complete with bar/outdoor fridge. plenty of wash down and drying space. Ample room for vehicles and trailers. 2nd floor is more then comfortable, great for prepping food and getting good rest (with ice maker). Open floor plan allows for everybody to spread out. Important if you in the water or out in the sun all day. Beach is cool, food was great. Be advised that you should be familiar with water ways or consult professionals if your not. Their are some narrow channels and rocks that can be submerged at high tide. But for the first time we stumbled onto 3' to 6' (based on tides) and was able to fill a bucket or two. Very accesable.
This was our first time staying on the Island and this house exceeded our expectations. It is first class and super clean and housed our family of 5 easily giving all of us plenty of space to spread out. The screened-in deck / porch overlooking the canal was perfect allowing us to keep all the doors open letting the ocean breeze in! We are definitely coming back next year!

We have been staying in the Pine Island House, escaping the WI winters for the past 4 years. It is hard to find new things to say about the house and the area. The accommodations are and have always been excellent - clean and comfortable. The kitchen has everything you need and then some. And the view from the screened in back porch is amazing and very relaxing, great for morning coffee and watching the sunrise.
This year we brought our 2 1/2 year old grandson with us. So we visited the beach/park often this stay. The area is well kept and relaxing. We all loved it, except when it was time to leave. We are already looking forward to our return next year.
