About Billy Marcus

I split my time between Vail & Austin, TX. I am an avid swing & lindy hop dancer and travel all over the US competing & social dancing. My goal is to some day live in the Vail Valley full time and help build a local dance community. Though my passion is dancing & teaching dance, my career is selling meat or other protein based foods all over the world. I'm fulfilling the destiny of a long line of meat traders from back in the 1930's when my grandfather sold meat for Swift in Chicago. Another passion of mine is snowboarding & telemark skiing, lately it's been all about telemarking.

Billy Marcus purchased this house in 2003

Why Billy Marcus chose West Vail

I grew up in Kansas and my parents met at CU Boulder. They both have an affinity towards mountain living. Naturally we grew up vacationing in this area and picked Vail because it's one of the best ski resorts in America. We wanted a home centrally located between Vail, Minturn, Beaver Creek, Avon & Edwards making the drive to any ski area within 10 - 15 minutes. We also enjoy cooking and having Safeway & City Market within a 3 minute drive helps feed our passion.

What makes this house unique

I wanted to have a place in Vail that was close enough to rely on public transportation to get to the town of Vail but central enough to drive down valley to Avon & Edwards. The home is in a private, residential neighborhood which is close to the park & Stephens Off Leash dog park and a three minutes walk to the Meadow Creek Bus stop that picks up every 15 to 30 minutes depending on the season. The private shared hot tub allows our guests to unwind after a long day of activities. We are dog friendly for non-aggressive breeds.

Comfy house in West Vail great for family & dog friendly + hot tub/decks

  • 4 of 5

Enjoyed our stay in the Valley View Unit. Fully equipped kitchen, clean & nice hot tub and plenty of space for our family of 4, comfortable sofa, good wifi.... Having the washer/dryer was also a big plus! Convenient location to Vail Village and other locations in Colorado and had a nice walkable neighborhood too. The unit was overall clean, but definitely had a slight pet odor - I"m assuming from the carpet upstairs. I had to buy an air freshener for upstairs to help. There is not much air circulation in the upstairs bedroom. We opened windows downstairs to air it out and it was fine. Overall - still a great place to stay. Really wish there had been a guest book w/ suggested things to do in area as we had to work hard to find things to do or suggested outfitters. Here's what we did: a Timberline raft tour on the Shoshone/Colorado, kayak tour on Lake Dillon, Adventure Ridge in Vail - day tripped to Aspen (Maroon Bells hike & lunch) and hiked Hanging Lake in Glenwood, hiked near Frisco/had lunch there too. If we had more time I would suggest the downhill bike from Breckenridge to Frisco. We cooked most days - but found the Northside Grab & Go as a great little place for breakfast, sandwiches, burgers & coffee! GO there it's a little gem.

Challenging for older adults!

  • 3 of 5

We loved beautiful Vail, but we were not terribly impressed with this condo. We had intended to share it with another couple but they couldn't come. This was just as well because my husband and I were forced to sleep in separate bedrooms! The bedroom upstairs had a rough sloping ceiling and my tall husband scraped his head on it first thing! As he often gets up in the night, we decided this was too risky. We couldn't both use the downstairs bedroom (as originally intended) because the bed had to be pushed against one wall in order to make enough space to get in and out of the other side without banging heads or knees against the wall. Also, there was only enought room for one bedside table and lamp in that room....and we are both nightime readers! My husband's height was an asset in the kitchen because the cupboards were too high for me to reach almost anything, and I was not prepared to use a step-stool on the slick tile floor. The balcony was lovely and secuded, but there was no outdoor furniture for our exclusive use. We had to move two metal chairs and a tiny rickety table from the hot tub area and put them on our balcony, then use extra towels to make the chairs comfortable for sitting. Parking on the steep driveway and carrying our suitcases up the steep steps was not too bad, since it was June and therefore not icy. Vail was gorgeous and we spent our days enjoying the town and the surrounding area. Our evenings were spent on the balcony enjoying the scent of pine trees or dozing on the comfortable sofa! It was a very relaxing weekend once we had got ourselves settled in.

Vail in April

  • 5 of 5

The property was exactly as described. Billy was great to work with. Very responsive. We were there from a wednesday night through Tuesday am. On Friday, I saw that the trash wasn't picked up and the cans were overflowing. I texted Billy about it and he made a call and the trash was gone the next day even though Tuesday is the pick up day and he got the trash company to pick up on a Saturday. I would stay here again without question.

Not impressed with Billy or his dirty rental

  • 1 of 5

My friends and I enjoyed the house; however, there were a couple of issues that came up during our stay and multiple issues with the owner. When we initially rented the unit, we were told it was a five night minimum but they would allow us to rent for four nights. The adjacent unit was rented for three nights which is what we would've preferred. When we arrived the first night at 8:00 p.m. we walked into a trashed house that wasn’t cleaned. It was disgusting. There was bedding and towels piled everywhere and the house smelled horrible. I contacted the owner who had no idea at first, that we were even showing up that Thursday night. He contacted his cleaning crew about cleaning the house, but we needed to leave for at least an hour for them to clean. He offered to refund our money for the one night, which we appreciated. Besides the sticky counter tops, the house was clean and comfortable enough. Another disappointment was that we had no access to the hot-tub for 1.5 days. After our stay, Billy contacted me and said he wasn’t refunding the first night because he had to pay $250 to have the house fumigated and cleaned. The hot tub was drained because “it was the dirtiest his cleaning crew had ever seen it”. I'm a professional, as was the other three people staying in the house, and we left the unit clean and neat. There were other renters staying at the house before us who clearly may have trashed the house and got the hot tub dirty. Also, there were renters occupying the other unit at the same time as us who could’ve dirtied the hot tub as well. Billy was very accusatory and decided not to refund our first night. He had no proof that we were the cause of the smell in the unit and stains on the bathroom wall. He was extremely difficult to work with at this point.

Owner's Response: This was an unfortunate series of events that were not in our control. The home was not cleaned when this guest arrived which was shocking since that had never happened before. Once we reached out to the cleaning staff we had found out that they had gotten into a car wreck in a remote area in the mountains and had no way of informing their team about the situation. Since it was a five hour turn around time there was very little margin of error. Luckily, she wasn't hurt in the wreck but it was a stressful situation to deal with for her and her family. From that point on, I was unable to create alignment with this guest regarding many details around the home. Since my assistant Amy is running the day-to-day of the home which has been working very well I decided to consult with her regarding this situation and after this guest checked out we decided to use the one day refund promised to fix a lot of the things that this guest damaged while she was staying in the unit knowing full well that we most likely will be receiving a "one" star rating. We have prided ourselves on being a customer service oriented clean inexpensive option for vacation rental in the Vail Valley and we will continue to provide that level of service moving forward. If you would like more details into this transaction please don't hesitate to call me.

very good

  • 4 of 5

We liked the unit of this house. it is well equipped in thing you might need if you cook for yourself during stay.

There are 3 units that share common deck at the entrance. The only one thing we did not like was hot tub is located in the common area just behind the window of the bedroom. However other guests who used the hot tub were nice and did use it during waking hours.

Owner was very helpful and responded very quickly to any questions/concerns we had

I liked quick update by email about parking situation in front of the house garage when new guest were to come .

House is located in walking distance to the free shuttle to get to ski area

I would definitely stay there again if chose to ski in Vail again , by the way snow was wonderful!!
