Saint-André-d'Allas Chateau / Country House Rental Photos and Description

Chateau / Country House, 4 Bedrooms, 4.5+ Baths, (Sleeps 8)

Just imagine your own 'petite chateau', set in the heart of the Dordogne, a region steeped in history going back for thousands of years. Your holiday home is situated just minutes from key attractions such as: Sarlat, one of France's most well preserved medieval villages; Beynac and Castlenaud, two of the most famous chateaux in the region; the cliff hanging village of Roque de Gageac; the prehistoric sites of Les Eyzies and the famous caves of Lascaux. This, combined with 2 large rivers for canoeing; day and night markets and hundreds of cultural events means that your holiday can be as quiet or as full as you wish.

Set in an hectare of private gardens, your grande maison has a unique tower with open battlements where you can gaze out over the peaceful valley and watch the sun slowly setting. What better way to enjoy your evening aperitif?

Afterwards, lounge in the shadow of the massive stone tower, then fire up the barbecue and enjoy dinner by the water lily pond, stocked with frogs and fish. Or, as the mercury rises, simply relax by your own private pool, overlooking the valley, and catch up on that

reading you always meant to do. The breakfast area overlooks the pool at the front of the house where you can enjoy croissants, breads and yogurts from our famous artisanal boulangerie, 5 minutes walk away.

Built in the mid eighteenth century, it's thick walls a testament to older, more robust building standards, Maison Grise, nonetheless has every modern convenience. It's four spacious bedrooms, (sleeping 8 in double or twin configuration) all have an ensuite bathroom, to ensure luxury with privacy. Bath towels. pool towels and hairdryers are provided.

Living in history doesn't mean you have to abandon your modern comforts. Broadband WIFI

is provided, along with an IPOD/Iphone docking station, quality stereo speakers, and large digital flat screen TV. There is a washing machine, a drier and a spare freezer in the laundry (which also has a magnificent view over the valley), whilst the well equipped and spacious

open plan kitchen will have you itching to release your inner Nigella (or Gordon for that matter). Outside, the lush gardens have plenty of shady areas to sit and enjoy a drink or just to gaze at the peaceful pastoral scene in the valley below.

During the high seasons, total privacy is assured as the owners do not live on site. In the off seasons, special rates can be negotiated for smaller groups or couples. For example, the entire ground floor including the master bedroom is available from 850 Eu per week for 2 people, and with 200 Eu per room thereafter. However, privacy is still assured as you will have the whole kitchen/lounge/living area to yourselves, as you would be the only group there. Priority though, will be given to bookings for the whole house, rather than for smaller parties. Please contact us if you need any further further information.

About Charles Nagy

As avid travelers, Anne & Charles see the wild places of the planet shrinking due to the encroachment of human activity. With that, wild animals no longer have the space and freedom to live their lives normally. To try to redress this balance in their own small way, they have set up a charity wingsoverafrica, to work with wild animals in Africa to help them co-exist with humans. They have purchased a small light aircraft to conduct surveys and anti poaching activities, initially in Namibia, but ultimately wherever in Africa they are needed. If you wish, you may visit the owners website for more information on their activities.

Charles Nagy purchased this chateau / country house in 2005

Why Charles Nagy chose Perigord Noir

We always wanted a vacation home in France, and when we first visited the Dordogne, we were blown away by the beauty of the countryside, the history, the medieval villages and the Chateaux.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

Watch the sunset from our tower which enjoys a 360 degree view of the surrounding countryside, whilst sipping a glass of champagne. Breakfast at the pond in the shadow of the tower, watching the frogs on the lily pads.

Charming villa in a picturesque setting

  • 5 of 5

Our group of 6 adults just spent a week at Maison Grise, which exceeded our expectations. The photos on the website really can't capture how beautiful the house and its setting are. The interior is cozy and comfortable, the kitchen small but adequate for our needs, and all comforts are well served, including a clean, bright and well-equipped laundry.

The master bedroom and bath (on the first floor) are significantly larger and more elaborate than the upstairs bedrooms. On the second floor two matching bedrooms (with beds that can be separated into two twins) each have large and fully-equipped bathrooms. The 4th bedroom (with a double bed) is actually in the tower, has a door into one of the 2d floor bedrooms, and a very small bathroom, adequate for one person but tight for two.

Outside there are eating areas off the living room, kitchen, a picnic table near the lily pond with a beautiful view of the valley; and the pool is lovely and well-sited. Best of all is the seating area at the top of the turret, with gorgeous, sweeping views of the countryside.

The location is rural (the center of St. Andras d'Allas, just down the hill from the house, consists of several charming houses, a small farm, and a small church) but a boulangerie is just u the street, a large grocery store is only a 10 minutes drive, and Sarlat center is 15 minutes. It is convenient to many of the top attractions in the Dordogne. We also enjoyed walks on paths leading from the house through the countryside.

All business aspects of our rental were handled with ease.

Just wonderful

  • 5 of 5

Myself, my husband our 13 yr old daughter and another family of 4 spent a week here towards the end of August. As others have commented, the house exceeded our expectations and the grounds are delightful - there are so many different outside spaces to enjoy. Our family had a very special meal at Le Petite Tonnelle in Beynac one night, we had tow very nice meals at Le Bacchus (in Le Jardin at the back) in Sarlat and also at Le Glacier restaurant which is right next to Le Bacchus. One thing that isn't in the very comprehensive information package that Charles sends you is the 'chef for a night' service that is available from Teresa. Basically you can book her to cook a 3+ course meal so you don't have to drive anywhere. It's shame we hadn't known about this prior to arriving because she needs a few days' notice and, unfortunately for us, was fully booked that week. The night market at Saint-Cyprien was great fun, as was canoeing on the Dordogne and Padirac Cave. We had an amazing holiday and will definitely be back. Oh, and if you've left your dogs at home and are missing them, don't worry; the neighbour's dogs come and visit you for a cuddle :o) Thank you Charles and Anne.

It was perfect.

  • 5 of 5

This property satisfied all our needs for a family and friends numbering 8 and aging from 21 - 59 years. The chateau itself is immediately homely and well kitted out. With transport the location was central to all the Dordogne has to offer. History, scenery, local cuisine, walks, swimming, kayaking, go-karting, relaxation, comfort and fine wine was all we wanted. We got it in abundance.

Breathtaking, serene chateau

  • 5 of 5

My family and I recently returned from a week's stay at Maison Grise. All of us were enchanted and delighted to stay at this beautiful, well-appointed and well-situated petit chateau! The 18th century chateau had all of the modern conveniences while maintaining its charm and authenticity. The views of green, rolling countryside from the tower or from the master bathroom/ bedroom calmed our senses after a busy day of sightseeing. Our children had so much fun observing and naming the frogs in the pond, helping to build fires in the fire pit, swimming in the pool and figuring out which outside table we should enjoy our breakfast or dinner. Almost daily, my husband would walk to the local bakery for our croissants and baguettes. We were a short drive to most key sites that we wanted to see. Given that we woke up very early to get tickets to Font de Gaume and Les Combarelles, we were happy that we were so close to these sites. The furthest we ventured was to Gouffre de Padirac and Rocamadour which were both well worth the drive. Our only regret is that we did not have time to stay for 2 weeks so that we could enjoy both the chateau and the area even more. We have already recommended this place to friends. Merci beaucoup!

Idyllic Dordogne Escape. July 2016

  • 4 of 5

The description and facilities of Maison Grise far exceeded our expectations and provided us with the privacy and holiday sanctuary that we were looking for, as well as a wonderful base to explore the Dordogne area. Charles and Anne were exceptional regards communicating and their customer service. My husband and son and occasionally myself thoroughly enjoyed playing tennis every morning. Our favourite part of the day was drinking sun downers on the tower balcony, whilst enjoying watching the hot air balloons sail up into the sky. The property is ideally located just outside the wonderful medieval town of Sarlat, with the local supermarket Casino easily accessible. I thoroughly enjoyed walking to the Boulangerie every morning to buy fresh baguettes and the best croissants we have ever eaten. Recommend doing the 22km canoe trip on the Dordogne river from La Grojelac to Beynac, we had a fabulous day out seeing all the Chateaus and wildlife as we floated down the river. I will definitely be recommending this property to friends and family.

i am still dreaming of this petit chateau!

  • 5 of 5

A year ago, I planned a 3 week vacation in France for our family-me, husband and 12 and 14 year old. The Dordogne region had been on my bucket list for some time. I saw a lot of lovely homes but when I saw this petit chateau, I knew this was the one for us. Charles was immediately responsive to all my questions.

When we arrived at the chateu, we were speechless! I knew it would be beautiful but it was amazing! I could not stop taking pictures! My son's favorite spot was by the coy pond where he found frogs, fish and lilly pads. I loved the glorious pink hydrangeas fully in bloom near the bridge. There were so many different sitting spots-the picnic table under the trees, the bistro table overlooking the valley, around the lovely pool, the lovely gardens, the table under the awning outside the kitchen and our personal favorite, the turret! We would watch the hot air balloons floating nightly and watch the border collies herd the sheep at the farm nearby. Idyllic.

The indoors was lovely also and full of charm and character. It was also spotless. Beds were very comfortable and the views from the master bedroom and bath were so lovely. We would awaken to the braying of the sheep. The master bath is huge! I did not even mind doing laundry because I was able to hang the clothes outside and listen to the natural spring.

The location was perfect-about 15-20 minutes from all the sites except for Lascaux, which was about 40 minutes. We dined at 2 restaurants in St Andres that were a 5 minute drive. Lo Gorrisado was our favorite meal and we really enjoyed the ferme auberge meal. The boulangerie is a 5 minute walk.

Charles also supplies an informational booklet on each room and appliance that is very helpful. When we had additional questions, either he or Anne responded immediately.

This region was our favorite of the trip - we loved exploring caves, castles and beautiful villages filled with history, visiting local markets and eating some delicious food.

We loved that petanque balls were supplied and we played at the court across the street a few times. We also enjoyed the pool and the cover really helped to retain the heat to keep the water warm.

I cannot wait to return to the Dordogne and will stay here again! Thank you very much, Anne and Charles, for sharing this truly special home with us. I am sure many of our friends will also stay here as we have been raving since we returned!

A magnificent historical area, famous for the 100 years war between England and France in the middle ages. Near the fabled Dordogne river, with a chateau on every corner, with hundreds of chateaux in the area. This is also a famous area for pre-history, with Lascaux caves a few kilometers away and many other pre-historic attractions, plus canoeing, walking & cycling trails, balloons and microlight flights. With great restaurants and vineyards nearby, it is truly a wonderful summer destination for all the family.
