We rented the cabin for 4 nights. It was raining when we arrived, the gravel road was washed out, the windows were OPEN, TV on, and a bag of personal belongings inside. Upon texting the owner, she told us she left the windows open for fresh air (that should have been a clue) and the TV on, since the last renters had trouble with it. Also that she would pick up the personal belongings in a couple of days.
We noticed a strong musty smell as we entered through the lower level, but that was a basement, so we did not think much of it. Living level was a comfortable layout so we settled in. We noticed the smell creeping upon us, so we turned on the ac units (there was no central air) , on fan setting, to bring in fresh air, they were FILTHY and did not help. We also noticed that the living room sofa and chairs all smelled bad, like wet pets. We attempted to get fresh air into the upstairs bedrooms. Even with windows open and fans on, we could smell and taste that musty mildew odor all night. It was awful, woke to headache and sore throat. (the upstairs beds were poor quality, not level, and sheets clean but had stains). We ate our breakfast cereal out on the deck the next morning, standing up, since all was wet; just to breathe some fresh air.
We agonized about staying or leaving but decided for health reasons to abandon this cabin. After decision was made, it was a HUGE relief even though we had already paid for the stay. No dollars are worth our lungs' health. We had been told to place our trash in the out building and in doing that, noticed that there was a mountain of trash bags in that building! Yuck.
We had to drive away with the car windows open, to air the smell out of our luggage and belongings. We have stayed at many homes and condos and this was the only one that was unsafe air quality. This place should NOT BE RENTED or lived in until the air quality is remedied. Although we do not suffer from either, anyone with asthma or allergies BEWARE! We have owned multiple properties and are familiar with maintenance procedures and this cabin does not have the maintenance it needs.
The owners response was that she wished we had called, "the heat pump would have cleared the air." I am sure it would NOT have remedied the mildew/musty situation or the smelly furniture.
Our family met for a short vacation. Property was a good fit for us. Some toured Monticello, some golfed and some hiked in the Blue Ridge trails. The house was clean and had plenty of sleeping areas. Close to Stauton which had some very good restaurants that we dined at. The property is not right on the main road. It was a good thing I had a GPS or you would drive by the driveway. I would recommend this property for your stay.
What a wonderful, peaceful home located in beautiful Shenandoah Valley. We are a family of four and one dog and we had plenty of room to spread out. We especially enjoyed the deck in the mornings and evenings. We felt very much at home here. The location of this house was superb. Shenandoah National Park and The Blue Ridge Parkway were about twenty minutes away, where we enjoyed beautiful scenery and excellent hiking. The house is a little over a half hour away from Charlottesville. We highly recommend visiting Monticello. Phyllis, the owner, was a joy to work with. We will definitely return!
We rented this lovely house for 4 nights in April so that my best friend and I could attend our high school Alumni Weekend (Stuart Hall) in Staunton - my husband came along as chauffeur. The house was plenty big, arranged over 3 floors - sitting area & air hockey downstairs (1/2 bath); Master bedroom on 1st floor (full bath); 2 bedrooms upstairs (full bath). The huge deck out front was delightfully warm, even on chilly April days, and the small deck off one of the upstairs bedrooms is very private. We didn't use the back deck, as we were mostly busy in Staunton, but it was inviting and would have been a fun place to grill. Food Lion is <4 miles away in Fishersville; Barren Ridge Winery is about 2 miles, on the way to Food Lion. Staunton is only 15 minutes away, so it was very convenient for going back and forth. Our dog loved our time there, and pretty much wanted to go for walks all the time. Phyllis, the owner, was very helpful, and had the house in perfect condition when we arrived, and we are planning to rent the house again for a full week next year. O - the house is decorated with a lot of artwork by P. Buckley Moss, a local artist, for whom my best friend used to work - a happy coincidence!
We stayed here for 4 days over Thanksgiving. It was very enjoyable and relaxing. We had guests for traditional Thanksgiving Dinner, ( our son, his girl friend and her parents). There was plenty of room for everyone in Dining/Living room space. There is a lot to see and do in the area; we went for a hike on Humpback Rocks off the Parkway, and visited Swannanoa Palace amongst other things. We enjoyed staying here so much that we plan on staying a week here this coming April. Our yellow Lab enjoyed the walks through the woods and neighborhood. Ms. Cave was very helpful and answered any and all questions . For the price of a hotel room; you get 3 bedrooms, numerous open deck space, 4 acres of land, peace and quiet and plenty of parking area. Very good deal....very good place to stay......The property is as described, and made for the best of holidays for my family and dinner guests.
The house was just as described. We stayed there in August 2014 with two families, four adults and four teens. The boys pitched a tent and had a great time sleeping outdoors. The rest of us stayed in the house and enjoyed the 2.5 bathrooms, never a wait even with 8 people. :-) We had a fire every night in the outdoor fire pit which the teens loved. Our Madrid exchange student was especially enthralled with the fire as outdoor fires are not permitted in Spain.
The house is very close to a great winery which we sadly didn't visit until our second to last day. Make sure you visit earlier. Staunton is a a cute little town only a short drive away with a fabulous gelato place (three visits in one week).
The house was so affordable we had vacation dollars to spend on horseback riding and zip-lining.
The only drawback is that the house is an hour to the nearest entrance to Shenandoah, so we spent a bit of time driving the days we visited the park. Overall it was a great vacation and we would stay there again.
