At Sunshine House you can enjoy yourself in many ways. Take a walk in the 200 acres Acadian forest located out the back door. It has many miles of well maintained hiking trails, yes there is a is so quiet there, all you hear are woodpeckers and the sounds of the wind in the trees.
Or you could walk over to the organic farm next door and get some fresh eggs from the chickens, and buy some fresh organic produce from the garden for your dinner. The lake is right out the front door, and is great for swimming, or paddling. There is even an old barn, which keeps my kids busy for hours. Every night you can have a campfire, wood provided, and roast some marshmellows. There is also a sauna you can use.
this property is unique due to its relationship and location to Windhorse Farm.
A visit to Windfhorse is an elemental experience to be sure, whether you’re dipping in the lake, sitting by the fire, digging in the gardens or taking in a steam at the sauna. Below is a list of some of the more popular ‘elements’ of Windhorse Farm. Come and experience them all, and then add to the list with your own discoveries….
The Forest: The 200-acre Forest Akati opens one to natural beauty and tranquility seldom experienced anywhere. Let the sounds and silence of nature sink into your bones as you wander by foot or on bike on and off the 22 kilometres of forest trails.
The Great Eastern Gardens: Enjoy the 24-year-old permaculture garden and orchards along Wentzell Lake. This food-growing landscape is a beautiful place to wander and rest in the midst of countless species of other living beings. In the centre of the gardens is a large covered arbor with a gong and central fire pot. This is a wonderful place for conversations among old friends or new acquaintances.
Mother Maple: Bask in the power of this 400 year old Sugar Maple rooted in a clearing at the heart of the forest.
The Forest Gong and Kami Shrine: Alongside the Sweetwater Stream stands a hemlock structure built in the tradition of Japan’s Kami shrines. These bring to attention a natural, sacred spot. Make your presence known by ringing the gong and connect with the unseen beings of the forest.
Wentzell Lake: Take full advantage of being on the shores of Wentzell Lake. Swim or paddle when the surface is liquid; skate when the ice is thick.
Wood-Fired Sauna: A real treat at the end of the day, you can alternate the very hot inside with a cold dive into the pond outside. The sauna is reserved for overnight guests only.
Fire Circles: A classic activity at night, or in cooler daytime weather, is sitting around one of the many fire circles for conversation, music or silent contemplation.
We love staying at Sunshine House with our family and friends. We have stayed there on multiple occasions with two or three other families where it is the perfect setting to connect with each other, and with the natural world. Our kids love to explore the magic of Windhorse Farm next door; visiting the horses, the chickens and exploring all the beautiful trails. We have big potluck suppers every night, enjoy the sunset on the wrap-around porch, and finish the evening with a bonfire and marshmallows out back. On hot days, we take a dip in Wentzell Lake or the pond next door. We've been there in every season, and never run out of things to do and explore. The house and carriage house are big enough that several families can share it comfortably with enough space that it never feels crowded. We love this place and plan to return as often as we can!
