This is a great place to vacation with friends and family. Las Palmas the name where the condo is, is located at the center of La Pedrera, walking distance from beach and 2 blocks from the main street where all the bars & restaurants are. This place is magical not only for its unique beaches but mostly bc of its ecological, organic food & its peacefulness. If you are looking to disconect, this is the place to go. Still a small town untouched by the mass, where everything is simple and at the same time chic. Near by there are many charming towns where one can spend the day ( Jose Ignacio, Garzon, La Paloma, La Barra, La Punta, Rocha etc..). please google them on the map so you get an idea of the distance but some are 10min and others are 1 hour away. Jose Ignacio, La Barra,& La Punta are the most popular of all towns.

Muy buen lugar en La Pedrera

  • 5 of 5

Not exactly as expected

La Pedrera is a fabulous beach-incredible sweeps of great sand and a cute town with nice bars, an ok supermarket, good fruits and vegetable stores and a great carniceria. We didn't really try the restaurants, but the palapa on the beach had great hamburgers and the chivitera in town does a good job on the national dish of Uruguay. We also enjoyed the craft beer place next to the water towers.

Las Palmas de la Pedrera is a very nice complex. It is well-maintained, has a nice pool, and the managers, Christina and Carlos are very nice and extremely helpful.

The unit is large, and has a nice patio, a good sized kitchen and eating area, and a kitchen that is well-stocked with plates, glasses, silverware, etc. We made most of our meals here.

We did have some issues with the maintenance of the unit. The downstairs bathroom is missing a toilet seat (and one of the 2 bathrooms upstairs had a broken toilet seat that did not attach), and the downstairs bedroom was missing curtains (the window is right on the sidewalk), so we couldn't use this room. It meant that our son ended up bunking with his sister and her husband. There were no batteries for the A/C control (so no A/C until we bought them), some missing light bulbs, and issues with cleaning: bugs in the bedding (over a dozen in one room), stained sheets, cobwebs hanging from the ceiling. Beds were only made for 4 of us, but we got sheets from the manager for the remaining beds.

The unit does not have a sea view ("breathtaking" or otherwise) and the "two-block" walk to the beach more accurately about a kilometer--still very walkable, but an excursion. Wi-Fi wasn't working, but it may be fixed now. The electricity kept cutting out. The owner didn't respond to e-mail

Practical details:

Finding the complex: Las Palmas is a block off of Av. Principal. Entering La Pedrera from Hwy 10 turn left at the two large white water towers- Las Palmas is on the left. You will end up parking on the other side of the complex near the unit, but these instructions will get you to the front of the complex.

Finding the unit: It is unit #15. The managers, Carlos and Christina, live in the unit near the front in the only unit with no thatched roof. They had our keys and solved various other problems for us.

We were advised not to use the water in the unit for drinking. You can buy large 6 liter bottles of drinking water at the supermarket.

We had no luck with the ATM in town in the market (we went to Paloma)

Owner's Response: Tom, Firstly, i wanted to say i am sorry for not responding to your email but i was in the Patagonia with no reception, internet or TV. Having Karolina around, i was sure she would help you out and solve your problems which thankfully she did as you mentioned. I was able to get some internet when i went into to town, but could not respond to all your concerns, and called karolina who told me that everything had been solved. On the other hand, i am also sorry you did not like or Expect la pedrera, to be such a hippie/surfer, relaxed, under developed, town. I actually thought or assumed you had researched the place. In reference to the unit: the unit was never mentioned to have a sea view- what i did say it was 2 blocks away from the beach - but thank you i will address that on the property details. Now with the actual bugs, stained sheets, webs etc…. that unit is brand new, you were the 3rd customer i have had. I not only have sheets for all 11 beds but also i have extra sheets for all beds, so its strange that you had to ask the manager. The room which you complained about not having curtains, i specified it was a maids/service room, who most of the time wake up early. The problem could of been solved putting a sheet over the window. I do want to apologize for the whole toillete seat/top situation, i have no idea how that could of happened, and since its 3rd world country those items have to come from Montevideo. Also in you inbox i did suggest you buy your initial grocery on your way to la pedrera as well as change money. I lalso asked you if you needed me to make you a list of places to go. I also mentioned that the internet came from the club house. Below you can read a copy of the email i sent you there are parts cut out bc of the limited characteres: Tom i inserted suggestions for you in the home away site. I just wanted to let you know that Karolina the woman who will open the house for you - you can ask for anything you can also email me. In town there's a pharmacy, bars, restaurants and more things. On your way to La Pedrera, you should stop at a bank and change money which you can do in Punta del Este ( la punta). You can pay in dollars every where but the exchange rate might vary. Internet you can get from the club house but if you wish you should get that external internet to connect to your computer. let me know if you need anything else that i can help you with. thanx for the tips and i hope you had a great time in the end carolina

The nearest town for grocery is la Paloma. I recommend on the way to stop and get grocery's at La Tienda Inglesa & Devoto, both located on Avenida roosevelt ( la punta, punta del este). Also take advantage to to go to ATM. In Uruguay everyone uses dollars, so if you don't change money or go to an ATM everyone changes dollars and use the current exchange rate used in banks.

I just want to be clear that this town is a very unique and modest one. Being already in South America which is a 3rd world country, towns like these are very quite, cozy, no noise, peaceful and relaxing.
