Wonderful spacious home with great views

  • 5 of 5

This seaside retreat is perfect. The kitchen is well equipped, the bed is comfortable and the home is immaculately clean. There are windows galore so it is easy to encourage the sea breezes to blow throughout the home. My wife and I enjoyed sitting in the sunroom drinking morning coffee and planing our day. The home is perfectly located to explore the South Shore and is convenient to Halifax as well.

Bill and Sheila were very gracious hosts, promptly answering our questions and they were especially helpful with suggestions for adventures in the region. Bill suggested we drive to Wolfville in the Nova Scotia wine region on Saturday so that we could visit the weekly farmers market and then spend time at the wineries in the area. One of the highlights of our trip was lunch on the patio at Grand Pre winery in Wolfville.

We visited Chester (the Shore Club for lobster supper) , Mahone Bay and Lunenberg along the south shore. Peggy's Cove is minutes away so we went there several times to see this famous landmark in various weather conditions.

The Maud Lewis exhibit at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia in Halifax is definitely worth a visit. We had seen the movie, Maudie, about her life and it was rewarding to actually see her twelve by thirteen foot house intact inside the museum. After the gallery we had nice lunch at McKelvie's across the street.

On our last evening Bill and Sheila kindly took us for a boat ride around the bay. It quickly turned into a nature tour - eagles, osprey and dolfins.

In summary, this is a perfect place.

From the moment you open the door, the spectacular view will grab you by surprise ….

  • 5 of 5

Sheila’s and Bill’s waterfront home at St Margaret’s Bay is such a delightful place to experience Nova Scotia. We had many plans ahead of our trip, as this was our first time in Nova Scotia. Arriving to this beautiful and elegant seafront home is an experience in itself! From the moment you open the door, the spectacular view grabs you by surprise …. The home is so tasteful in its décor, and so comfortable and practical … you have everything that you may need, and more, for spending a few days surrounded by nature and peace. As you walk down the wooden steps to their deck, you feel the beauty of this place embracing you and letting you know that a few great days are ahead. We found the deck to be one of our favorite places in our trip. We went swimming every day. The water is crystal clear … cold enough to make it memorable (it wakes you up!), and warm enough to make you want go swimming again. Fish is plentiful. We made a couple of dinners with mackerel that came out from the end of our fishing rods …. Delicious fish when BBQed with just some lemon, salt, pepper and olive oil! We also found ourselves sitting on the edge of the deck and staring into the water that is so clear it feels like the finest aquarium … you will see a lot of life and drama; many creatures interact there; green and hermit crabs, herds of feeder fish, of course mackerel, and many other kinds of fish … and all of them have their own agendas! It is a very entertaining activity! We of course also met Sheila and Bill who are the most welcoming hosts. Bill came by soon after we arrived and gave us great tips and ideas that helped us fine tune our plans …. We enjoyed a good glass of wine sitting with them, overlooking the Bay, and other interactions through our stay. Overall, it was hard to leave this little paradise in Nova Scotia! We highly recommend it!

Seaside accommodations with no rival

  • 5 of 5

Once we walk through the front door, we knew we were in for a treat. The "wow" factor was immediate. The elegance and warmth of the house radiated from all corners. Not to be outdone, the deck provided an outstanding view of the cove and the expansive bay. The private deck beckoned you to enjoy the water as well. After getting settled, we had the opportunity to meet Bill and Sheila. They were very welcoming and helpful as we planned our week's stay. Offering many suggestions, we were able to create an itinerary that allowed us to explore the surrounding area while maximizing our time at the house. The accommodations and location made it possible for us to enjoy a peaceful seaside vacation and experience Nova Scotia at its best.

Stunning home and views!

  • 5 of 5

Just ended a week’s holiday in this lovely home with its stunning views. Not long enough! The VRBO pictures don’t do this peaceful oasis justice which is a rare comment. Sheila and Bill have provided every amenity possible and are readily available to answer questions and offer suggestions. The perfect hosts! The house is spacious, beautifully decorated, in immaculate condition. For a pair of foodies, we were thrilled with the fully equipped modern and generous size kitchen. There is a dock, on which sits a boat house, stocking fishing equipment and kayaks for guests. Has the feel of a private resort! Truly one of the nicest homes that we have ever rented (among 40 or so). Our only regret was that we hadn’t booked for an extra week. Next time!

Here were a few of our favourite outings:

If you enjoy easy hikes, try the one at Polly’s cove, located about 2 km east of Peggy’s Cove; the views from the granite outcroppings are truly stunning. For more info, consult google ‘’Nova Scotia trails’’. The best meal we had was actually in Lunenburg at the resto Fleur de Sel, the ocean tasting menu. Excellent food and beautiful village, a UNESCO Heritage site, worth a visit and only about 1 hour away. Locally, we really enjoyed the restaurant Rhubarb for lunch. Not sure if this info is updated, but Ryer’s, a little east of the property sells live lobster at a reasonable price but they no longer steam it. There’s a big pot in the front entry closet for this purpose. Their oysters are excellent and at $1.30 a piece, can’t be beat, at least compared to Ottawa’s prices.

If visiting Halifax, we strongly recommend seeing the Maud Lewis mostly permanent exhibit. Lots of information about this famous Nova Scotian folk artist on-line. Around the corner is a nice pub, McKelvie’s, offering an upscale seafood menu.

Enjoy your stay!!
