Born and raised in Niagara on the Lake. Like everyone that visits we just love it. It's history and the uniqueness of the architecture, its sense of community and beauty are all major attractions to us. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do.
julie purchased this House in 2008
Why julie chose Historic Old Town
Ideally suited property, in the “prettiest town in Canada” .We had seen several beautiful homes, but none of them offered quite what we were looking Eventually we found this one. We knew immediately that this was the one we wanted. It was cute, the location so close to the town centre couldn’t be better, and our guests would be able to easily walk to everything the town has to offer – theatres, restaurants, shops, the lakeshore, etc. One day, after several months of renovating and tidying up the exterior, a lady knocked on the door to introduce herself. She explained that she had been watching the progress with keen interest because she had lived in the house as a child, along with her 5 siblings (she still lives close by)! We invited her inside of course so that she could see her 'old' home. She became quite emotional and tearful, gave us big hugs, and said how pleased she and her sisters were that someone loved this house again. It held so many wonderful memories for them all. She went on to tell us that it was always filled with music and laughter when they were children. Her father used to play the piano and they would all sing along while he played. We were so pleased that she was able to see her old home again, and that she liked what we had done to it. As she left, she asked if we would mind if she brought another of her sisters to see it. She did, and her sister’s reaction was the same as her own - she loved it. We were thrilled by their heartfelt pleasure and delight. Our first impression had been right, we sensed it had been a happy home. It had a good ‘feel’ about it when we first looked at it - and it still does! There is something warm, cozy, re-assuring and welcoming about it, sensations which many of our guests have commented on when they arrive. You're sure to feel it too
What makes this House unique
As realtors always tell us; location, location, location is crucial, and Abel Thomas House has it! Park your car when you arrive and you don't need to drive again until you go home! No long walks into town, although so close to everything the house is on a quiet residential street, so its very tranquil. One of my pleasures on an early summers morning is to pick up a cup of coffee and walk with Bailey our dog, to Lake Ontario (five minute walk) and watch the sail boats racing or people out in their fishing boats. There is something wonderfully tranquil about that scene. Its a two minute walk to the local coffee shop, where you can sit and read the paper or chat to the locals. Its a couple of minutes walk to: boutiques, restaurants, groceries, locally owned bakery, post office, golf course, parks with children's play area, outdoor community swimming pool, tennis courts, baseball field, volley ball court, convenience store, liquor store etc. No driving unless you want to. Many cycles paths for safe cycling, bikes can be rented locally and delivered to the cottage. If you have a dog, a 2 minute walk to the 'common' will get you to the off-leash park, they have a marvellous time there! We have many coupons from local wineries for free wine tastings.

Perfect Location, Beautiful Cottage
We stayed here for an extended weekend at the end of October and had been to NOTL many times before. We loved the location of the cottage-an easy walk to Queen, the park and an easy drive to any of the wineries and breweries. The house itself was immaculate and the style was lovely. It was just 2 of us, but we brought our dog who enjoyed squirrel watching from the front window and she loved the fenced in backyard. Julie was easy to connect with before and while we were there, and when we booked she offered recommendations and talked about the town in a way you could tell how much she enjoys it. NOTL is one of my favorite places and we certainly would love to stay here again.
Fantastic Cottage Fantastic Location
The Cottage is absolutely gorgeous with all the comforts of home and more . It was immaculately clean and very well organised .Lots of extra touches (toiletries bathrobes and slippers ) very welcoming. The outside area was beautiful with a decking area and lovely lawned area with an abundance of flowers and plants a fabulous setting and very private. The only negative we have (and its a small one) is that the second bathroom is on the lower floor from the bedrooms. Was not a problem for us. The location Niagara on the Lake is fantastic is a beautiful place to visit and the cottage is central to everything . We hardly used the car walked everywhere so you dont miss any of the beauty of the place. Plenty of shops bars and restaurants all within walking distance. Will definitely staying again on our next visit. The owner is very easy to deal with answered our messages promptly and answered all our questions .( We were travelling from the Uk so this was important to us ) A very pleasant stay look forward to the next time.
The house is excellent. Great location, with many restaurants and good places to go near by. Upon arrival the house was immaculate and very well organized with a bunch of nice touches. Easy check in and everything we needed was there. Fantastic experience all around! Niagara-on the-Lake is a ridiculously beautiful location, and the house, quite honestly, had the nicest curb appeal on the street. What more could you ask for?
great property, great location
Once again, we had a most enjoyable stay at Abel Thomas house. It was well equipped and clean. beds comfortable, air conditioning fine.
We loved it! The house was just like we hoped and expected. Very clean and well organized. The kitchen was well-stocked with dishes, pots/pans, cleaners,... We did not need a car at all. We walked to town 4-5 x during the weekend stay. We loved the fenced-in yard for the dogs. The only negative thing was the lack of FREE cable channels. Not enough variety. we plan to come back soon.
We are extremely happy you enjoyed your stay and wish to return to The Abel Thomas House. Upon request, we can increase the range of cable channels.
Live Theatre, jazz concerts, classical music, outdoor concerts, volley ball courts, wineries, historic sites, off-leash park, outdoor community swimming pool, football pitch, paddling pool, helicopter rides, horse and buggy rides, nature trails, behind the scenes theatre tours, fruit festivals, Christmas Candlelight Stroll, fruit stands, children’s playgrounds, tennis courts, Butterfly Conservatory, Botanical Gardens, Luxurious spas where you can pamper yourself, have a massage or maybe a couples massage, manicure, pedicure, lots of different services offered. Take a Whirlpool Jet Boat ride up the mighty Niagara River, a real thrill, be prepared to get wet! If you’re not keen on getting drenched there are covered boats but that’s missing half the fun. Cycle rentals are available, they’ll deliver them to the house. Cycle along the Niagara Parkway, a beautiful ride all along the river, a cycle path runs the full length, so its very safe for cyclists. Cycling on side streets in the town is also safe, they’re very quiet, and no one is in a rush here. The horse and buggy rides will pick you up at the house if you like, or you can start your ride outside the Prince of Wales Hotel, which is just a minutes walk from the house. Take time to walk around the town, off the main street, you’ll see beautiful homes, English style gardens and be in awe at the variety of flowers and plants. No matter what time of year its just the prettiest place to visit. We’re blessed with a ‘micro climate’ in NOTL, where our winters are not as cold and not as long, and our summers are longer than the surrounding area. Our gardens are in flower earlier in the Spring, and we don’t get such an early frost so our gardens are in bloom longer. We have thousands of acres of vineyards where different varieties of grapes are grown, producing world-class wines and a specialty of the area ‘Ice Wine’. This region is also the fruit basket of Ontario growing strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, peaches, apricots, pears, apples, plums and vegetables etc. You can stop at one of the many fruit stands by the side of the road and pick up some wonderful locally grown produce, it tastes sooooo good! Take some ‘home’ and make a strawberry milk shake, or have peach French toast for breakfast, a real treat. From gourmet food to family friendly we have restaurants to offer the best of the best. Or do you like to cook? We have amazing farmer’s markets offering artisan breads, cakes, etc. and many other items, and boutique food stores that will inspire even the basic of cooks! I am always surprised by what our guests do in our town that I have never even thought of! Photographers, gardeners, birders , geo-cashers, vintners, cyclers, antiquers and geekers… seems we have something for everyone! If you visit during January and February you're in for a treat, the Ice Wine Festival is in January, very popular and loads of fun. Also available are Snow Shoe Wine Tours, the shoes are provided and you'll get instructions on how to walk in them (they're easy), you'll have a guided tour through the vineyard with plenty of tastings of the different varieties of wines and when you think you can't possible consume any more, you'll be given a great bowl of delicious soup which can be enjoyed while sitting beside the fire!
