About Mike

Anna & Mike spent a long time looking for their ideal mountain retreat, and immediately felt at home in Snow Lake House. Zoom-in on the map to see how close the house is to the ski base!

Mike purchased this house in 2009

Why Mike chose British Columbia Mountains

We wanted a house on a great ski hill but we also wanted a real community town to go with it. It also needed to be within three hours drive of Calgary for friends and family. We found that Fernie ticked all the boxes for us in 2009, and we love it even more today.

What makes this house unique

It is only a short warm-up walk to the ski base area, about 6 minutes (i.e. closer than some of the car-parks - zoom-in on the map to compare).

We also have a ski locker at the Day Lodge for storing skis, so you do not need to carry them and can carry your ski boots and store your shoes.

The views are even more spectacular in the summer, as the garden leads down to the lake with the mountains dominating the skyline above.

Perfect Multi Family Home

  • 5 of 5

The Snow lake house was a perfect choice, we were two families with a total of 9 people. Three floor house allowed a lot of space to have time to yourself or be in the common areas with others. The younger 4 stayed in the rooms in the basement, the adults and 17 teen year old niece stayed in the 3 bedrooms up stairs each bedroom had its own eusuite which worked out very well. After a good day of skiing or first thing in the morning the view of the back deck or from the Kitchen is second to none 80% of the Fernie ski hill can be seen from the back of this location. The hot tub was also a great feature for soaking some sore mussels and on the clear evenings the star gazing was impressive, you could also watch the groomers up on the mountain getting the hill ready for the next day. The house is well equipped with all the necessities for cooking to board games the pool table was a hit with the boys and the large fridge and freezer accommodated all our food for our 6 night stay as we ate breakfast lunch and supper at the house. The locker on the ski hill was also a welcomed part of the house which allowed a person to leave skis and pole on the hill and not have to pack them back and forth from the house. The Fernie on hill village has all the little thing you may need from a small liquor / convenience store to restaurants and lounges all within walking distance of the Snow Lake House. Mike and Anna were great to deal with and met us when we checked into the house and went through the particulars and answered any questions we had. The lines of communication were always open for our whole stay if we had any questions.

Thanks for the great stay.

Snow Lake House - Fernie

  • 5 of 5

We're a group of guys that do an annual ski trip every year during the last week of February and this year's destination was Fernie, BC. Most of us are in our 50's and are fortunate enough to enjoy the finer things in life including nice accommodation when we do these trips. Snow Lake House did not disappoint!! Mike and Anna's chalet was spotless when we arrived. The chalet is very spacious and nicely furnished. The kitchen was extraordinarily well equipped (yes some of us guys cook!). It was an easy, short walk to and from the base of the mountain. All in all we had a great stay. I'd highly recommend Snow Lake House for families or small groups considering a visit to the Fernie area.

Beautiful Chalet in a Good Location at a Reasonable Price

  • 5 of 5

We are from Calgary and have stayed at dozens of chalets and condos on or near the ski hill at Fernie. We stayed at the Snow Lake House for the first time just before Christmas 2015 and think it offers excellent value.

The walk up to the hill is easy and the walk back down to the chalet is even easier. Mike and Anna have a ski locker available for use at the day lodge but we didn't even use it because the walk is so easy. One advantage to staying at Snow Lake House and other places on Timberline Crescent instead of the more expensive places on Highline Drive, is that you can more easily take either the Timber chair or the Elk chair first thing in the morning. If you stay on Highline Drive, it is inconvenient to take Timber, so you end up taking the Elk chair every morning, even though the snow might be better in Currie bowl or on polar peak.

The chalet lay-out is well thought out. My brother's family joined us, so we were a group of four teenagers and four adults and we had plenty of space for dining, sleeping, playing games etc. The hot tub is of excellent quality and was well maintained, and unfortunately that was not the case at some of the other fancy places that we've stayed.

Mike and Anna were very helpful and gave us a thorough tour of their place when we first arrived. I could tell that they have put a lot of time and effort into making sure that their chalet works, and that their guests are comfortable.

We would definitely stay here again.

Great house for a family ski holiday

  • 5 of 5

The VRBO photos do not do this place justice. The new bedrooms are really nice, and the ensuite bathrooms are superb. This is so much better than the other places we have stayed in Fernie, and in particular it has much bigger living areas than our previous rentals so it was great for our large group. We will be returning next year!

Fantastic Ski and Adventure Base

  • 5 of 5

A half dozen of my friends and I get together every year for a week of skiing. We change resorts almost every year and this year, we decided on Fernie. We often get condo style accommodations but Snow Lake House (SLH) looked like a perfect fit to have us all in one place. Easy walk (or drive, if you want) to the hill, hot tub, 5 bedrooms...

Mike and Anna have just completed a great reno that adds a beautiful stone and cedar facade and balcony to the front of the house along with a great entrance hallway. The front of the home is visually miles ahead of what appears on the VRBO pictures (as of Feb 2015). All three upstairs bathrooms have obviously been recently upgraded. Beautiful job.

The hot tub, kitchen and dining room and two bedrooms look out over Snow Lake (not really a "lake", but bigger than a pond) toward the ski hill. With not-so-great ski conditions this year, it wasn't always the view we wanted to see, but I can imagine that waking up on on a pow day and looking at fresh snow on the trees would be inspiring. Probably pretty nice in the summer, too!

The living areas of the house are great. Very large and utile kitchen, big dining room (sat 14 when we had guests for dinner), and a comfortable living room with fire place on the main level and furnished rec room in the basement with its own TV and a pool table. No keys to lose... Mike had coded locks for all the doors and changed them (and the ski locker combination) to match my cell phone, so we were comfortable that nobody else had the numbers... not that it really mattered; I don't think there is a high crime rate here. The ski locker on the hill was great and held, realistically, 3 pairs of skis... 4 if you packed it carefully. With a rental pair and someone in for a tune every night, we didn't have to carry skis back and forth, but it wouldn't have been a problem anyway due to proximity.

The hot tub was freshly changed for our arrival. Mike had a service come in every couple of days to make sure it stayed that way. It was used every day.

Snow Lake House is obviously a well loved and maintained home. I would recommend it to families and guys and/or girls getaway groups anytime. Everyone in my group thought it was an excellent choice! When we get back to Fernie, Snow Lake House will be our first choice.

Great Family Ski Getaway

  • 5 of 5

What a perfect family experience the Snow Lake House provides. The living space is abundant, the amenities excellent, and the house is well equipped for a large family. We are a family with a total of 10 adults and 3 children and we also arrived in 5 cars. There is room for everyone and everything. The proximity to the lifts was the greatest asset. No checking the snow report at Snow Lake House; you need only look outside at the lifts and the runs. The crowning glory to our week was watching New Year's fireworks from what seemed like a front row seat. We would very much like to be back in future years. Thanks Mike and Anna for your hospitality!
