Overview

About the property

Lakefront estate on a private woodland peninsula, fireplace, sauna, chef kitchen

This secluded magical estate is located on an seven acre woodland and park-like lakefront peninsula. This house is surrounded by water on three sides, which offers magnificent views from almost every window. With its steeply pitched roof, stone facade, and waterfall pond the house wouldn’t be out of place in the English countryside or Germany’s Black Forest. One reaches the lodge via a long private road through the woods.

This is the perfect place to gather with a group of friends and/or a family get together -- well-behaved dogs are welcome! We can seat large groups for dinner in the dining room or Great Room. Due to the artistic touches guests have said that they felt like they were in a movie set.

GREAT ROOM: Inside you’ll find a cavernous wood-paneled Great Room with floor-to-ceiling windows, a huge working fireplace, a baby grand piano, a victrola, built-in library filled with books, comfy faux-fur draped couches and an enormous wrought iron chandelier. It's the perfect place to watch movies (large flatscreen TV/DVD), play board games or read by the fire. The owner is a children's book author/illustrator and her books are available for reading out loud while looking at the dollhouse sets which illustrate them.

DINING ROOM: The stately wood-paneled dining room features a gas fireplace, giant wooden tables, a built-in wine wooden wine rack and oil paintings. The dining room is adjacent to a glass and wood conservatory filled with cozy seating, trees, plants, an upright piano, another dining table, a working fountain and tree trunk columns.

KITCHEN: The kitchen is a chef's paradise. It features a Viking professional gas stove with griddle, a Sub Zero two door refrigerator, a interior barbecue grill and plenty of counter space with stools. The kitchen is well appointed with every type of plate, bowl, wine glass, cup, platter, coffee, utensil and cooking tool imaginable. A Nespresso cappuccino/latte maker and professional juicer is available upon request for those who know how to use them. The spice cabinet is filled with all types of exotic and traditional spices. Off the kitchen is a laundry room with a washer and dryer.

5 BEDROOMS: The Clocktower Bedroom has incredible lake views from french doors, a king-sized bed, a queen-sized round bed, two clock tower windows, his/her full bathrooms, a massive sunken tub, a steam sauna shower, a flat screen television (cable) and access to a private deck and a stone patio. The Blue Bedroom has a king-sized bed, a twin bed, a small flat screen television (with DVD player/cable), a full bathroom, views and a lakeside door. The Spring Flowers Bedroom has a queen-sized bed and lake views. The bathroom with a cedar steam shower is across the hall. The Ship Captain Room (upstairs) has two twin beds, a queen bed, two twin cots, a small stairway library and lake views. The Cinderella Chef Bedroom is off the kitchen. It features a twin bed. There is a full bathroom right next to it.

GROUNDS: Outside you’ll find a secluded lake with a private floating dock, a large stone patio with cafe lights, manicured grounds, three decks, rolling hills, a koi pond, a babbling brook, a butterfly garden, a child's playhouse, hammocks, a swing and huge pines circling the home. You can dine al fresco on the giant double length picnic table on an octagonal deck. Other activities: Boating/swimming/fishing/ice skating on the pristine lake, napping in the hammocks, playing house in the child's cottage, swinging, sunbathing on the patio and roasting marshmallows in one of the five fire pits.

MISC: Pet homing doves fly free on the grounds. The owner also has two potbellied pigs who might be found grazing outside in her pen.The owner has a separate apt on the property. She will greet you, give you the keys to the house, show you the lights, heat and other details. When she is away a caretaker is on call. He will plow the driveway and shovel the snow, if necessary. Firewood and a wheelbarrow is available outside for your use. This isn't a bed and breakfast. We want to give you complete privacy and autonomy.

SIZE: Square footage: 5,000 interior, 7.5 acres of land (Main house: Great room, dining room, sun room, commercial kitchen, 6 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, cedar sauna room, steam shower, laundry room, heated towel rack; Outbuildings: Boathouse, folly tower, Hansel & Gretel child’s house).

PETS: Well behaved dogs and friendly potbellied pigs are considered for $100 per visit. We have a large dog run, a pig barn/pen, and a chicken coop. Other animals are considered on a case by case basis.

About Cynthia

Artist, children's book author, playwright living in NYC. My children's book dollhouse sets are on display in the house. http://www.butwhowillbellthecats.com

Cynthia purchased this estate in 2007

Why Cynthia chose Connecticut Shore

This property is a private waterfront oasis located only 1 hour from Manhattan. In the summer swim in the lake, dry off in the hammock and relax in the cedar sauna. In the fall boating is still possible and the leaves are bright and colorful. In the winter read a book by the huge fireplace, cook in the professional kitchen and dine in the wine-colored dining room. This is truly a special place to hold family get together for the holidays or to escape for a romantic weekend vacation. Need a place to write your next novel or paint your masterpiece, look no further. The views from every window are incredible. I have had yearly family reunions here ever since I bought the home. It is a treasured event that my family looks forward to every year.

What makes this estate unique

It's extremely rare to find a private, 7 acre lakefront estate only 15 minutes from public ocean beaches, 1 hour from Manhattan, 20 minutes from New Haven and 1 hour from Hartford. You have all of the benefits of complete privacy and relaxation with fine dining, theater and nightlife close by.

Unique Home to Celebrate ANY occassion!

  • 5 of 5

What a truly amazing time we had at this unique house as I celebrated my 50th! You really need to take your time and walk around and enjoy all of the unique finds that are hidden throughout this house...lots of surprises! We had an "adult" weekend right after a snowfall so we did not get to enjoy any of the outdoor amenities unfortunately but that didn't matter! Our guests included musicians who used the pianos (there are two) and we brought along our own accoustic instruments so we forgot all about the outdoors! :) The house is stocked nicely with all of the items you would need to cook & bake as well as towels, etc... We loved the Master Bedroom with a view of the lake....it was very peaceful way to wake up and enjoy the sunrise. Plenty of space to spread out when needed and the dining areas provided an area to be more cozy. Cynthia is SUPER responsive and helpful to ensure a wonderful getaway! Hope to return in a warmer time of the year to enjoy the outdoors! THANK YOU!

Incredible, creep-tastic weekend of mystery

  • 5 of 5

I and eight of my very closest friends had the unrivaled pleasure of staying in Cynthia's one-of-kind Connecticut estate last weekend. You would have had to legally evict us and/or pry us out with large crowbars (we loved it that much), but Cynthia was so nice and responsive that we wouldn't have wanted to make her life more difficult. Have you ever wanted to star in your own murder mystery, minus the murder? Cynthia's house is the perfect place for you to live out your real-life game of Clue dreams. Set on a beautiful lake, complete with paddle boats, each room of this house is more fantastic than the last. The entire weekend felt like one big treasure hunt, and the constant refrain was, "Oh my god. Come check out this _______," as we discovered mind-bending surprises at every turn. I thoroughly recommend a stay at this house for anyone who is a boring person - simply spending time here will make you interesting by default.

Storybook setting is accurate description

  • 4 of 5

Our group enjoyed the grand gathering room and well equipped kitchen to their fullest. There are surprises and artistic whimsical surprises to be hunted like treasure throughout the house and surrounding grounds. The fall weather was brisk and the interior of the Lakefront Estate was warm, inviting, and cozy. When planning your vacation in this grand space, do note that there are only four bedrooms - - one is the luxurious master suite, one with a queen size bed, one with a queen size bed and a single bed with ensuite bathroom, then a second floor dorm room with three beds. Our group was able to make the accommodations fit our needs. The dorm was a bit close quarters for those assigned to this space.

Overall we highly recommend this private estate for family gatherings.

The kitchen and grand dining room are really a wonder to experience.

Owner's Response: I'm glad you enjoyed the Storybook Lodge! One error: Two of the bedrooms suites have extra large king beds (The Blue Room has an additional twin sleigh bed), The third room, Spring Flowers Bedroom" has a Queen bed. The room upstairs you refer to as the "dorm" is "The Captain's Room." It is usually used by children. It has a full bed, two twins and a twin cot. We also have an additional cot and couches. A fifth art studio bedroom with a round queen bed is sometimes available, if needed. Come again!

Grand house!

  • 5 of 5

A group of nine of us stayed for the long Thanksgiving weekend and loved the Lakefront Lodge. The house is large, clean and cozy with lots of character. The grounds and, of course, the lake were gorgeous and private. The bedrooms were comfortable, the common rooms were grand (with a magnificent wood burning fireplace in the living room) and the kitchen was well stocked and fun to cook in. No TV's in the common rooms, just in a couple of bedrooms, but hopefully you aren't coming to all this natural and man-made beauty to watch TV!

Fabulous Week

  • 5 of 5

Cynthia, We all had a wonderful time at your intriguing home, so much so that we only left it twice during the week. The house was great and had everything we needed. The option of going for a swim, taking out a boat, relaxing in a hammock, or using the sauna are not the choices we usually get to pick from. Hanging out on the dock with a cup of coffee or a glass of wine was a treat as well. I enjoyed reading your books and getting to see the amazing dioramas you created. When my brother starts packing his car his dog usually hops in and won't get out so he doesn't get left behind. This time he took a look, went out to the back yard, and wouldn't move when my brother said let's go (to be honest, we all felt that way.) You almost ended up with another rescue dog! Thanks for a great time.

Owner's Response: It's true! It's hard to leave the house, isn't it? There so much to do there -- during all of the seasons. I'm glad the pup had a great time too! Come back again soon. Best wishes, Cynthia

If you seek a lake house near NYC, this is it

  • 5 of 5

The house, of course, is lovely - as evinced by all the photos. What I didn't get a sense of was how stunning the lake is. We brought paddle boards up and had a great time. A few of us also brought our goggles and went on awesome morning swims.

If you run, there's a forest near by with single track trails (short ones, but still, trails).

The backyard lawn is perfect for lounging (it's flat and large). There are hammocks, an outdoor dining area, and a fire pit.

Oh - the kitchen is stellar. Usually, rental homes have poor kitchen facilities no matter how lovely the home. This house had professional, industrial grade facilities.

Awesome.

Owner's Response: Hi SR, Thank you for the glowing review! It's hard to show the scale of the grounds and lake. We have 400 feet of lake frontage. It's such a peaceful, clean lake. You can also run up our private drive and back down in a circle past down our neighbor's drive. All in all it's about a mile long run through beautiful woods and wetlands and you can repeat it if you want a longer run. The homeowner before us had a live-in French chef. That's what the kitchen is so perfect for cooking. Come back again! Cheers, Cynthia
