Colonia 5 de Diciembre Bungalow Rental Photos and Description

Bungalow, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath

La Palapa Tranquila is a unique and very special place. If you are looking for something different, an adventurous vacation away from it all, with tranquil days in the sun, deserted beaches and evenings of watching beautiful sunsets, or whales and sea life splashing in the ocean, you have found your paradise. Your adventure will be an unforgettable escape in a natural eco preserve setting.

The palapa house, La Palapa Tranquila, is in an eco resort called Chonchos. It is very remote, which means on some occasions you will need to spend your first, or last night in the beautiful city of Puerto Vallarta. There you can enjoy an evening dining in one of the finest restaurants, visiting many of the art galleries, or strolling along the malecon. We can recommend a hotel in PV if you like. If time allows after the arrival of your flight into PV, you can go directly to the palapa and catch the 3:00 PM water taxi Nayeli, from Boca de Tomatlan, an hour from the PVR airport. The water taxi going back to Boca de Tomatlan leaves Chonchos at 11:00 AM, so keep that in mind for your flight departure time heading back home. We can arrange for a private boat. The cost is $150.00, which needs to be paid in advance.

The water taxi ride will take you by the scenic coastline where the green lush mountains meet the deep blue Pacific Ocean with small Mexican fishing villages, the well known town of Yelapa and other small vacation resorts along the way. After the hour water taxi ride you will arrive at the beach of Chonchos and be greeted by the staff who will help take your luggage to La Palapa Tranquila. The ocean is unpredictable and especially during the winter months, December, January and February, the ocean can be rough, which means that the water taxi might not be able to drop you off at the beach. On a particular, but rare day like that, you will be dropped off at the nearest village, Chimo. Somebody should be there to hike you into Chonchos, with a mule if necessary for you bags. For people a bit less sea worthy, there is always the option to take a regular taxi from Puerto Vallarta to the town of Chimo as well. The cost to take a taxi to Chimo is about $125.00 - $150.00 and takes about 2 1/2 hours. The taxi can also be arranged from Chimo, if for some reason you missed the water taxi going back, or on a rare day when the ocean is too rough to pick you up from Chonchos.

The palapa house is off the grid with solar panels to give you the modern convenience of refrigeration and lights. That does not mean you can use a blow dryer, but once you are there, you realize that this is not the place you worry about that anyways. When there are cloudy days, especially two or three in a row, the system might not work as well, but we do have flash lights and candles. December, because of its shortest days, and the rainy season (July through September), are particular months when the solar system might not get adequate sunshine to charge the panels. We do have a back up generator in case of lack of sun.

We have a solar hot water heater for nice warm showers and drinkable clean spring water. The hot solar water might not have hot water in the mornings during the winter months, or on cloudy days, but there is always hot water in the afternoons after the sun has warmed up the tank.

Most personal cell phones will have service at the palapa if one wishes to use one. It has been a bit hit and miss lately to get cell phone service, so if you depend on cell service, you might want to reconsider staying here. There is a place to charge your phones and cameras at a charging station at the palapa.

Instead of watching TV you will be entertained by nature with a variety of animals, birds and insects and an wide ocean view right in front of the palapa where sightings of whales, dolphins, manta rays and other fish are an entertaining every day phenomena depending what time of the year you are visiting.

There are beautiful hikes, one of which takes you to the next quaint little village, Chimo, where one can get cold beer, basic groceries and dine at one of the two local restaurants. The hike is somewhat vigorous going over one hill, and takes about 45 minutes, or longer, if you take photos and take your time enjoying the amazing scenery and views.

Some other activities include kayaking, snorkeling, birding and fishing. You can also take day trips to other small villages, such as Yelapa and Pizota by water taxi. The water taxi goes to the fishing village of Chimo twice a day as well. If you are looking for a different type of vacation, away from it all, then look no more!

About Yvonne Angyal

We were very excited when we came upon the opportunity to buy this special place, La Palapa Tranquila, which is located in the tropics as well as in the middle of the jungle and on the ocean. This had been our dream, to own a little peace of paradise just like this. Now we are happy to share our special place with you. We are very adventurous, athletic and outdoorsy. We love to travel and have been to many places. I am from the Netherlands, so we travel back to Europe quite often. It is one of our favorite destinations. There are so many other places we want to see one day, especially South America and explore more of Mexico. We enjoy the Mexican people and their culture very much. We can't complain about the food either. We are not much into 5 star traveling, even though we have done it from time to time. We find that when you go off the beaten path and stay at different homes, B&B's or small non-chain hotels instead of big luxurious hotels, you meet the most interesting people and learn the most of one's culture.

Yvonne Angyal purchased this bungalow in 2005

Why Yvonne Angyal chose Puerto Vallarta

We chose to buy this vacation rental, because of it's uniqueness. A place like this, totally off the grid away from it all with no roads nearby is so hard to find. It is in such a peaceful beautiful setting that we fell in love with it right away. You are totally connected with nature at all times.

What makes this bungalow unique

The benefits of staying at our property is to get away from it all. As soon as you set foot on the beach all the weight falls of your shoulders. The place is a little heaven on earth. It is a place where you can sleep and read all day, or you can stay busy with hiking, fishing, snorkeling, swimming, kayaking and exploring nature.

If you are up for a little adventure arriving and departing from Los Chonchos, then this is an amazing place to stay. On days when the water is too rough for the water taxi to make a beach landing, you will have to go to the little village of Chimo, about a 40 min. hike away, or you can hire a mule to carry your things if it is too much to hike with. Met lots of nice folks at Los Chonchos, and La Palapa Tranquila is a beautiful space, with amazing views and everything you need! We enjoyed the hike to Chimo (tiny fishing village), and relaxing on the spacious deck of the palapa was always the perfect end to the day! We only had one meal at the "restaurant" but it was wonderful! (Plan ahead if you want to eat there, they need at least a day's notice to be ready for you). Next time, we hope the water is calm enough to take the sea kayak out. The beaches are beautiful and never crowded - there are only about 24 palapas total at Los Chonchos, so never too many folks around. If you want a relaxing, peaceful getaway where you can truly practice the art of doing nothing (but with plenty to do if you choose), this is the perfect spot! Chuck and Yvonne were always very responsive and gave fast replies to any inquiries.

Jungle camping

  • 2 of 5

While it's situated on a lovely piece of land, this listing is closer to "jungle camping" than a home. The water taxi couldn't make it to the beach (big waves, no dock) so we were forced to jump into the water and swim to shore with our things. While we were instructed to pack lightly, we were also instructed to bring all food and provisions including toilet paper, towels, food, candles, etc. [this email arrived the day after our deposit became non-refundable]. The refrigerator was out of order so we used an ice chest to keep our food cold. Limited electricity and cold showers.

While we are hearty people and can roll with the proverbial punches I think this posting needs another perspective. The palapa is very bare bones and entails a lot of cumbersome planning. We left early and were disappointed.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your feedback and we do take all reviews seriously. Because you are the first person, in 3 years of renting to have such a negative experience, we will have to re-emphasize that our unique remote get a way is not suited for everyone. Weather and rough seas can make things challenging at times. Thankfully in the winter there are not too many bad days, although El Nino this year is making the ocean a bit more rough than normal. From what we understand Laura did not take the regular “Nayeli” water taxi but hired her own boat (not through us), which was on a rough day. The regular water taxi would have dropped her off at Chimo, where they would have guided her and helped her take her luggage to Chonchos. None of our past guests have ever had to swim into shore. We are working hard getting the refrigerator fixed and will replace it if needed. The ice chest does do a great job keeping things cooled for now. Repairing anything is challenging in a remote place. We just upgraded our solar system and it should have plenty of solar electricity for the lights at night, we also have a back up generator if needed. The solar hot water heater works great, although in December (short days), or when there are many cloudy days, it might take some time to heat up during the day, so best to take showers in the afternoon or evening. Laura happens to be our first guest to complain about cold showers. Bringing in all your groceries is optional, as there are stores nearby in Chimo, where they carry a lot of basic supplies. Another option is to have your meals at the restaurant. We do supply a pretty well equipped kitchen with a gas stove. We also supply bath towels and linens and try to keep toiletries and toilet paper stocked. The final information was send to her as an automatic message through the VRBO site. It was not send by me personally. We have a pretty good description and photos of our place. We also communicate with our guests throughout the reservation process and answer any questions they may have.

My boyfriend and I had such a wonderful time at Palapa Tranquila. What a stunning and unique home away from home Yvonne and Charles have made there . Yvonne was so great in making sure that we had reservations with Henry and Heather for dinner upon our arrival! We did make the hike to Chimo which was every fun and neat to see. We didn't get the chance to try the restaurants but we did meet some very nice people at the local supermarket. We did kayak for a short period of time after an initial defeat by the waves on our first attempt. It was well worth it though as we saw a whale no more than 50 feet away from us and a sea turtle swim buy. Truly an amazing experience! Thanks much for opening your home to us in Puerto Vallarta Yvonne and Charles! We would love to make it back sometime soon.

Owner's Response: We are delighted to hear that you saw a whale so close up and a turtle as well! We have had many sightings of turtles this year, which is very exciting. It is so much fun to explore the area. It is nice to hear that you hiked to the village of Chimo. We would love for you to come visit us again sometime soon and do some more exploring.
