We have been married for 50 years to the same people! Both: married '59, graduated Kansas State '60, had baby, '61, baby '62; baby '63--in '64 we got a dog!! All goes well.
Conrad Nelke purchased this cabin in 1985
We wanted a place away from the valley where all of the kids and grandkids could come and be together. We found the area while visiting friends in Whispering Pines in a gorgeous snowstorm the day after a warm Thanksgiving in Phoenix. It seemed like heaven to be able to share both worlds with only a two hour ride. We wanted in! We had the shell built and completed the house ourselves. We picked chandeliers from Mexico, rocks for the fireplace from all over the country, and furnishings from family pieces, 'gently used' and even broke down and bought a lot. It works as 'eclectic to the max,' The views in this area belong to God--we just bought here so we could share them. There is a feeling in the air here that brings out the best in people which makes them happy.
Inviting friends here for a day or a weekend is a joy for us & them. Everyday cares fall away as the pines, oaks, and juniper give the air a certain mountain tang. Actually, The 5,400 feet elevation makes the nights 25 degrees and days 15 degrees cooler than valley temperatures. Here, we have seasons that give us soft spring rain, exciting summer electriical storms, vivid autumn leaves, and frost, snow, & earmuffs.
We never tire of seeing the glorious views of 40 miles of Rim that we share with God. Sunsets from the north deck are amazing, and the experience of watching a storm approach through the valley until the new rain finally drives you from your nest in the porch swing inside--unforgettable. We have had many memorable family reunions here--there have been two Golden Wedding celebrations, a Honeymoon--the magic is just beginning. You won't want to forget your time here. Bring your best camera.
We had a great time at the Nelkes' home in the woods. The home is large and has everything you need. The views are absolutely amazing!
My family and I spent four nights at the cabin at the end of July. When we pulled up, there was a family of four elk standing right in the driveway! We spent most of our time out on the deck sitting in the swings, taking in the beautiful views. We went on hikes every afternoon and rainstorms rolled in almost every evening. It was just a very relaxing and happy gathering with my family. The big kitchen table sat all of us comfortably, and we even ate dinner out on the deck the one evening it didn't rain. The steps to the basement were a little tricky at first, but before too long, even my three year old was managing them easily. My kids have been cooped up indoors most of the summer (Phoenix heat), so for them, the beautiful weather and nature made the trip! The first place they would go in the morning was out onto the deck. I would definitely go back again! Thank you so much for sharing your lovely cabin with us.
The most beautiful place i have ever been in. The view was the best thing to wake up to. Im definitely planing to go back this winter. Thank you for the experience.
What an awesome place. A great review of the forest and Rim. Peaceful and pleasant all around. A great setting for family vacation. Proximity to East Verde River recreation areas was a highlight for the grand children. 17 nights of great enjoyment.
We recently stayed at the cabin (13 of us) for a weekend getaway in Payson. The cabin was terrific, offering plenty of space, seating, beds, games, and was immaculately maintained. The views overseeing the forest were fantastic, and the stars lit up the sky as we sat on the outside patio talking the night away. Working with Conrad was super simple, as he provided very directions and an overview of what to expect when we arrived, stayed, and left. The cabin is about 11 miles from the main highway (walmart is off the main highway), so you definitely have peace and quiet. There are plenty of water holes you can drive to within a few minutes to swim / campout for the day. Overall, a terrific stay at a beautiful cabin with a very responsive owner.
This is a great place for all the family to get together for some relaxation and fun without feeling like you are constantly bumping into each other! The Nelke home has it all! We particularly enjoyed the balconies and a sense of privacy from the world! We did have regular visits from the area elk family. One evening we had two babies and two mommas...so sweet. The views from every area were breath taking! We all imagined what it would be like in the snow! The game room was perfect for the younger family members to feel like they had their own space! They are still talking about the steps down to the bottom floor! Hope this helps you decide on a lovely place to get away from the heat of Phoenix! The AC was a nice feature during the days on the mountain!! The Nelkes had everything to make us comfortable, gave information on some fishing, etc.. and made us feel very welcome! Thanks for a terrific time!
