Blue Moon Cabana was built in July/August 2011 after several years of planning and hard work to make it happen. We put our hearts and souls into the cabana and wanted to build a home that fit with the culture of Hopkins. It was important to us to create a space that was comfortable and included all the things we would want ourselves in a rental cabana in Belize. We are not into the resort experience and value the local culture and people of Hopkins. We leave the resort-type experience to the places south of the village. Mirko, who lives nearby Blue Moon Cabana is available to assist guests with all their needs during their stay, including transfer to and from the airport (and other locations) and arranging tours and other adventures for guests.
Mirko Bechstedt purchased this house in 2011
Hopkins is a laid back village with beautiful views of the Caribbean Sea and Maya Mountains on the other side. We chose a beachfront lot in the village because we wanted to be central to everything, including the beautiful people in the village. Hopkins has a rich cultural life --and traditional Garifuna life is evident throughout the village.
Blue Moon Cabana is centrally located in the village which allows us to soak up the rich cultural life of the village. Local restaurants and other popular establishments are within walking distance from the cabana, but guests can also rent bicycles to get around, too.
The cabana itself is high off the ground and steps from the sea --and since the cabana has lots of windows, there are usually fabulous breezes flowing throughout the house. The views from the veranda are stunning!
Hopkins is a great base to enjoy day and half-day trips to the jungle, mountains, and cayes. In addition to relaxing on the veranda or on the beach in front of the cabana, there are so many adventures to enjoy in and around the village.
We spent two weeks in Hopkins, and got to know the village very well. Blue moon Cabana's location is extremely convenient, being right in the heart of the community. It's exactly as the pictures depict, and one is not disappointed as you enter and see the view and feel the breeze through the many windows. The Cabana has everything you'll need, the appliances are new and work perfectly. Sometimes it's the little things that count, and one of our pet peeves around the Caribbean is water pressure. I'm extremely happy to say that the pressure at the Cabana is excellent, and you'll never run out of hot water in the shower. The bathroom is new, clean and modern. There's no AC in the Cabana, but trust me when I say you'll never need it. There's 5 large ceiling fans to move air, and the breeze coming in through the large windows keeps the Cabana cool and fresh. You're literally 21 steps from the Cabana to the water, (yes we counted) and at night all you'll hear is the ocean. Other reviewers complained about noise from the village, we heard nothing to complain about during our stay. We enjoyed the Cabana immensely, especially morning coffees on the deck, watching the sun rise off the water every day. The beach is very private, and even though you're in the middle of the village you rarely see anybody passing by as you sit and enjoy the view. By far, the best place for breakfast and/or coffee in Hopkins is Thongs Café, which is less than a 5 minute walk from Blue moon. Directly beside the Cabana, is the Belfuna cultural kitchen. Fresh bread, baked daily, cinnamon buns, and other bakery items are available everyday. you place your order, and for next to nothing you get delicious freshly baked goods literally at your doorstep. Next to this, is a park where they hold the annual kite festival. a short walk across this park, and you'll find the best burgers in Hopkins, at Windschief Beachbar. It's right on the beach, and also less than a 5 minute walk from the Cabana door. I could go on for hours, describing how great the Cabana, and Hopkins, is to stay at and visit. Mirko the manager, is extremely helpful and wants your stay to be perfect. He'll arrange any trip or excursion you want, and I highly recommend going through him for trips out to the reef. The boat will pick you up, and drop you off right on the beach in front of the Cabana. Trust me.. We got to know Hopkins extremely well, and when we return, the Cabana is where we'll be.
My husband and I stayed at the Blue Moon Cabana for a week in February 2017. It is exactly as advertised except there is no way to explain beautiful views of the ocean and beach. Kitchen has everything needed to do your own meals even though Hopkins has some fabulous places to eat. The beds were a bit uncomfortable for the two of us older (55 +). But, when I Daughter and her friends stayed there June 2016, they found the beds to be nice. Loved swinging on the hammocks on the front deck. Would often get up before the sun and sit in the Adirondack chairs with a coffee and watch the sunrise. There a really comfy cushions for the beach loungers. There is wifi access and we didn’t have a problem getting on-line. Property very secure and not once did we feel unsafe. We even walked in the town at night and always felt that we were safe. Only downfall that is not in control of Property Managers, birds. They start waking up around 3:00 AM and are loud. Bring good earplugs.
Blue Moon Cabana is rustic, clean, nicely decorated Cabana right on the beach. The kitchen has everything you need to cook, or just have coffee or drinks. The large patio had chairs, a table and a great view. We spent a lot of time relaxing, reading and just watching the view. The beach is one of the best features right outside the door. It is in the center of Hopkins and you can walk to restaurants, bars, shopping......everything you need is within walking distance. The cabana is very well maintained and I would recommend it to anyone coming to Hopkins.
The cabana is beautiful. The hosts, wonderful. The location, amazing. The locals, friendly as can be. I would highly recommend anyone to stay there
This beach house is bang on the Beach in Hopkins, Belize. It is scrupulously clean immaculate, well run by two excellent property managers and is exactly as described. The beach is stunning and a wonder to wake up to.
Our pick up was organised by the property managers. Our pick up was on time and drove nicely. He was content to let us stop for lunch and toilet stops. When we arrived the properly was clean and as described and pictured. It was even nicer in real life than on the Internet. The sun was setting and it had the most beautiful light.
We had a lovely basket of fruit and a full water dispenser. The kitchen was extremely well equipped and well organised. There was a mobile phone provided and we were really told clearly that our managers were there to help us and we were to call on the phone if any issues. I don't think we did call them but it was good to know we could. The furnishings we all new or newish and they were sensible for the environment. There were two lovely hammocks that our children spent much time in, looking out at the sea and the waves. We were told when bedding would be changed but if we needed it done sooner then it could be. Plenty of nice thick beach towels and a little washing line to hang them on (these little things help) !
The house is well located in the vibrant village of Hopkins, which we loved. It was made clear that the plot was shared with baby blue cabana but what was to be used by whom was clearly stated and we had no issues with territory or use of our property. Nothing is shared and boundaries are clearly delineated. The property managers let us know that they would deal with any issues, but there were none.
There are restaurants literally on its door step. We enjoyed meals at Siomara's and Tina's Kitchen and a cookery lesson at Palmento Grove and Snorkling with Noel. The bakery next door is amazing it's called Belfuna Bakery. The Tamales were the best we had all trip.
You are in the middle of a village and it's a joy to be there. You are still a tourist of course but you are more involved in the community of Hopkins when you live IN the village.
We went up to the drumming centre to see when they drummed and where. It's well worth finding out and watching the drumming it is amazing.
We felt safe at all times at Hopkins. We walked round at night and day and we had no trouble at all, nor did we have to avoid it.
I stayed at Blue Moon Cabana with my two teenage children and loved the property. The inside is charming and well maintained and the terrace, with its two hammocks, was the best for hanging out at night or taking that first look at the ocean in the morning. The beach itself is beautiful with white sand and palm trees. It has a private feel without being isolated and there is a lovely palapa for shade when you need it. Right next door on the beach is a bakery where the owner bakes breads and treats over an open fire. She can tell you each day what she expects to bake the next. And just down the road is a fabulous restaurant called The Melting Pot which we found out about by talking to some of the local kids. Mirko and Annette manage the property and take good care of their guests. If you need them they're there to help and answer questions but if you don't need anything they are very unintrusive. We had our own rental car but booked a snorkeling trip and cave tubing trip through Mirko. We were so happy and impressed with our guides in both cases. They are young but so knowledgeable. During our snorkeling trip we found ourselves completely alone with our guide at 3 different reef sites looking at amazing fish and coral in beautiful clear water. The village of Hopkins itself has a relaxed and friendly feel and the locals are very approachable if you ever have a question. This seemed true throughout Belize as we drove around, sometimes getting lost and needing help. All three of us hope to go back sometime and my kids, especially my 15 year old daughter, aren't always that easy to please!
