About Kalen Properties

I am from Toronto, Ontario, Canada and have been traveling to Italy for many years for vacation ever since I was on exchange in Germany for a semester 20+ years ago. The first time I visited Tuscany, I instantly fell in love with the beautiful scenery, wine, food, and culture. In the summer of 2012 when I went on my annual Tuscan vacation with my fiancee, a real estate agent showed me this farmhouse which is mentioned in written historical sources as early as 1077. With over 4 acres of private land and the most breath-taking views overlooking Siena and covered in vineyards, olive groves, and forestry, my fiancee and I knew this was our dream home. After embarking on a 1 year restoration project and hiring all local Italians to maintain the Tuscan culture, artisanal tradition, and craftsmanship, this beautiful luxury villa is truly an oasis of serenity and perfection. The official name of the farmhouse is Podere Isola, meaning “island farm”, which I renamed to “Isola Serena”, meaning “serene island” and after my fiancée.

Kalen Properties purchased this villa in 2013

Guestbook comments from the owner

"The perfect spot for a group of wine lover friends to use as a base for exploring Chianti country. The villa is exquisite - the beautiful and pristine quarters will please even the fussiest of guests. Located literally in the middle of a vineyard and within an hour or less of any restaurant or winery you will want to visit. Really want to go back every year...will never find one to match it!"

Fabulous Property in Tuscany

  • 5 of 5

I would highly recommend this practically perfect farmhouse in Tuscany. Newly renovated and beautifully appointed, this house has countryside views with modern conveniences. Our family of 9, ages 10 - 68, thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. Natalia, the property manager, was very helpful arranging reservations and giving suggestions ahead of time. Check in and check out were very easy.

We did not use the pool much but it was nice to have it available to cool off at the end of the day. The kitchen well appointed beyond any rental expectation. The Wifi is good but did drop some when playing a game with multiple users connected - probably stretched it to the limit with 8 people connected.

Things to know:

If you want to have a tasting dinner at La Leccia (the castle next to the property), it might need to be booked months in advance.

They say the water is not potable so you need to bring in bottled water.

Do not let Google Maps bring you in the back way - only take the drive with the La Leccia signs. Going in past the La Leccia castle is a dirt road and challenging enough. You can make it the other way but it is pretty hairy and I would not recommend it.

There is a sky opening at the top of the house to let the hot air which rises out in the summer. The remote which controls it should be in the box in the great room.

Loved this house = would go back in a minute. As others have said, the drawback is that you never want to leave it to go anywhere.

A beautifully renovated house with a spectacular view overlooking vineyards.

  • 5 of 5

We rented the villa in late April for a family holiday with our four adult children and their partners. The house is bright, spacious, modern and very clean and is in a great location. Everyone had their own bedroom with king beds and ensuite bathroom. The kitchen was well equipped and worked well for our group and the living areas were nicely furnished. The large patio area with barbecue is great and the views over the vineyards are spectacular.

Natalia, the property manager, was very helpful and very friendly. She ensured that everything in the villa was up to our standards and responded immediately to any questions. As well, she offered advice on sightseeing, points of interest and restaurants in the area.

However, there are two items to be aware of. The drive into the villa is narrow and windy and quite steep at times. You need a good all wheel drive vehicle. As well, the tap water is not drinkable so we were constantly buying water from the grocery store in the local town which is inconvenient and not environmentally friendly. We did not know this until we arrived. Our family believes that a water purification system needs to be installed.

Other than these two points the villa is beautiful. We had a wonderful vacation and would highly recommend the villa. In fact, this was one of our best holidays and the accommodation was one of the main reasons.

Tuscan Charm and Luxury

  • 5 of 5

Looking forward to our Italian vacation, we knew with certainty we wanted 2 weeks in a villa which provided a tranquil escape, panoramic views of vineyards and rolling Tuscan hills in the horizon; we wanted to begin each day greeted by beautiful sunrises and ending with mesmerizing sunsets. In the villa itself, we wanted a stay in a Tuscan villa with rustic charm but complete with modern amenities for our convenience and comfort. To our delight Isola Serena surpassed our expectations! The villa was thoughtfully and strategically designed to complement the Tuscan landscape. The thoughtful design was illustrated through each window of the home which acted as frames for the surrounding landscape presenting it as living art, achieving the goal to remind us of the beauty surrounding the villa.

As for our comfort and convenience, this same thoughtfulness was applied through the amenities both in and outside the home (kitchen, dining room, bedrooms, bathrooms, patio and pool). The only downside of Isola Serena is that we wanted to spend every moment possible in this picture-perfect home.

It is worthwhile to mention the convenience of the location where the town of Castellina was less than ten minutes away. There was easy access to many other towns in the Chianti region, for a day trip to Florence or Siena, or a short drive to Montalcino to explore the Brunello region. Our stay was also made more relaxing by the ready availability of Natalia, the property manager, who was always willing to answer any questions or address any concerns.

We have visited Italy numerous times and have rented a number of villas, many of which were beautiful homes with significant sentimentality attached, however we can attest that, for us, Isola Serena tops the list.

To answer the common question when we consider renting a home away from home: ‘Do the pictures reflect the reality? Our emphatic response is the reality is much better!

Heaven on Earth!!

  • 5 of 5

I've travelled to various villas in the Chianti area, and Isola Serena is by far my best experience to date. Our group had the most relaxing vacation. All of the amenities of being home, and experiencing the best of Tuscany at the same time.

Location - Right in the heart of Chianti, situated close to Castellina and a quick drive to Radda, Siena, San Gimignano and other historic sites. It is also situated near Castello La Leccia, with many hiking routes. Extremely private setting.

Villa - Incredibly well laid out. A huge kitchen fully stocked with everything we needed to cook some amazing meals. The bedrooms are spacious and each one has an ensuite; Something i've never seen in any other villa. Double sinks as well! My wife and I are now considering a remodel at home. :) There is also a massive terrace overlooking the rolling hills of Chianti. The pictures for this villa don't do the view justice. You have the luxury of two massive dining tables, perfect for our large group. One inside for chilly evenings and a beautiful stone table outside where we spent many evenings eating delicious Tuscan food and drinking wine well into the night.

Pool - It was a giant Jacuzzi. It was nicely heated, not that we needed it with the incredible weather.

Hosts - Very responsive and they had a lot of suggestions around places to eat and visit in the area.

Wifi/Tech - This is by far one area where most villas get it wrong. Not the case in our stay. I was able to stream videos and we had music streaming from the main receiver to the outside speakers.

Overall, an incredible stay for our large group and we will definitely be returning.

Everything about this villa is amazing! I didn't want to leave. The rooms are spacious, the decor is stunning, and the views are breathtaking. While staying there we rented a car and everything was just a short drive away. We were able to drive to the hot springs, all of the designer outlets, the Duomo in Florence, and all the beautiful surrounding towns. I feel like we were able to get the full experience of Italy and I would recommend this villa to anyone and everyone.
