Great time to vacation in Maine!
The Bait Can is a wonderful summer refuge for families and groups of friends. Enjoy the southern Maine seacoast, beautiful crescent beaches with the softest sand you'll ever feel, delicious lobsters and seafood, a great getaway for those who want to escape the hot summer. Bring a sweater or sweatshirt for the cool evening temps!
The home was built by the owners' great grandfather who built several beach cottages in Kennebunk Beach during the early 20th century. It has been lovingly maintained and enjoyed by four generations of family.
Built in 1922, the house is in original condition throughout, but with upgraded kitchen and bathrooms. You'll love the enclosed outdoor shower and claw foot tubs! The Bait Can is a charming, informal home, loved by all - a great place to hang out and relax.
Within a short walk, bike or drive the Kennebunk Beach area offers all of the amenities that make for a great vacation. Bring your children, bring your pets, bring your friends and enjoy a great vacation in 'Vacationland.'

The Bait Can is owned by four sisters who inherited the property from their parents in 1993. Our summers growing up were spent in this wonderful house. The house was built by our great grandfather in 1922 as a wedding present for his fourth child, our grandmother.
Margy Hall purchased this house in 1922
KBIA (www.kbia.org) offers a wide variety of children's activities and programs, and is located just a 5-minute walk from the house - next to the beach.
Check out local favorites - Nunan's Lobster Hut and The Wayfarer in nearby Cape Porpoise, Merryfield's for berry picking, the Lobster Company on Rt. 1 in Arundel for fresh (live) lobsters and seafood, Cape Arundel Golf Club (where the Bush's play), Rachel Carson Nat'l Wildlife Refuge, great outlet shopping in nearby Kittery and Freeport (home of L.L. Bean).
Thanks, Margy. We had a wonderful week in Maine. The house is in the perfect location and filled with all the things we might have needed. We are hoping to return next summer.
We are all looking forward to our family vacation next year! Do you automatically send out your availability list to previous renters?
There's nothing better than getting the chance to stay at The Bait Can while visiting Kennebunk Beach. The location is perfect (a few steps will get you to the beach, a quick drive gets you to the port), the layout is cozy but comfortable, and the owners are fabulous people all around. I'm not sure what it is about this house, but it will make any "early riser" not want to get out of bed until NOON. It's perfect for a true R&R getaway.
If you stay here, I would bring some lawn games. There's enough space outside (in the parking area) for playing. We stayed here over the Fourth of July and had a great time playing badminton. The deck is also great for a game of cards.
This is the second time we've installed ourselves in the Bait Can, and we come with a variety of kids and adults and one dog. It's clearly a family-friendly place, within a short walk of Mother's Beach--as the name would indicate, a great place for younger kids to wade and check out the life in the tidal pools. The KBIA playground is also close to hand, which was great for the younger grandkids. It's a nicely-equipped cottage for my husband's short-order-cook breakfasts and my seafood dinners; the gas grille works beautifully, and there were enough beds, towels, dishes and toys to keep our four families happy and even serve a guest for two nights during our stay. Great place, excellent location, and games and puzzles for rainy days as well.
We have been doing family vacations for at least 10 years and this year at the Bait Can ranks number one! We include three generations of six adults, five children, and one golden retriever. On the practical side I appreciated the nice, heavy beach towels that were provided as well as so many items like the coffee grinder, dish soap, and condiments left from guest to guest; one son said he loved having the beach chairs and toys, and the yard games; the other son said the appliances, sharp knives, the beautiful house and wonderful space were super. (We came from Indiana, Texas, and Louisiana so it was good not to have to worry about all of the above.) Beds were so comfortable, even though the kids spread out every night in the living room--cousins forever.
The house is totally charming, a living history with wonderful artwork and a real authenticity. The front porch is perfect for sitting to read or visit and cocktail hour. The side yard was perfect for our family wiffle ball tournament (you will find some balls in the bushes when the leaves fall off, Margy--we didn't want to ruin the flowers.) The outdoor shower was perfect for rinsing off sand, tho I wouldn't have wanted to be in it when someone dumped some ice water from the dining room window.
The walk to the beach was easy. The morning walk (before 9:00) with our dog was like a doggie day care, so much fun for owners and pets. We spent days at the beach, a day at a state park, and two groups of the family went on trips with Captain Bruce of the Libreti Rose, a real highlight of our trip. We caught two stripers, a totally delicious fish you cannot find in the store. We got lobster at a fish market in Arundel, Margy's recommendation, and it was wonderful. Being a family who loves to cook, the only eating out we did was for a lobster roll/taco lunch.
If there is a downside, it was that we were not used to such concentrations of traffic on the freeways, but as one one son put it, Damn Great Trip!
Loved the Bait Can. My 3 adult children, 2 spouses and one small dog were very impressed with my choice. The location was so perfect we never went to any other beach and except for 1 very rainy day the weather was perfect. We cooked lobsters and swordfish from Langsford's ( Dan's recommendation) and had a great dinner at the Ramp in Cape Porpoise. After years of lugging linens to cottages on Cape Cod and doing tons of laundry when we (6 of us at the time) got home it was a joy not to have to deal with that. Beds were very comfortable and I loved hearing the waves at night. Just a great vacation. Thanks for sharing The Bait Can.
My husband and I have vacationed in Kennebunkport every year for 5-6 years, and we absolutely love the area. The beaches are beautiful, and rarely packed, the town is New England Style Cute, the Clam Shack has awesome Lobster Rolls (don't be intimidated by the line, it moves quick). And, on top of all of that, the location of the town, makes it an easy hour or two drive in either direction to see different Maine Attractions. This year, we decided we wanted to share the experience with some friends, thinking it'd be neat to hang out with two other couples in this little heaven...and as things happen, they changed plans and all wanted to bring their children. So we went from 6 people to 12 people quick and I was scrambling to find something that would be affordable for everyone, and still close to my happy vacation spot. The Bait Can was PERFECT. I cannot emphasize how completely happy we were with this place. The beds were comfortable, there was plenty of room for everyone, two fridges really helped when we were cooking and eating in. They provided beach towels, chairs and other beach-going-toys. Margy answered all of my questions beforehand and Dan arrived promptly to give us a run through of the property as soon as we arrived. There is absolutely nothing that could have made this vacation run more smoothly, I would definitely return and I would absolutely recommend this place to anyone looking to take a vacation with a group.
I rented Bait Can for a week in August for a reunion of four moms and all of our young children. All together there were 11 of us in the house (4 moms and 7 little kids)! As you can imagine, things could have felt crazy and stressful with this many people in one house but Bait Can accommodated us beautifully and we had a truly wonderful and relaxing vacation. The house is wonderfully equipped for both adults and children. The kitchen has everything to cook and serve a large meal and there's tons of nice glass wear for adults to enjoy a cocktail at the end of the day. From beach toys and boogie boards to board games and coloring supplies, there was lots for the kids. Mother's Beach was absolutely perfect for our group and we went there daily, taking advantage of the swimming and great playground that is right on the beach. Even with several three year olds in tow, it really is only a 5 minute easy walk from the house. We did go to a different beach one day -- which was still within a walkable distance but not so much with the young kids. We drove and used the parking passes supplied by the house and this was also perfect. We loved sitting on the porch at night and it was a perfect spot for the kids during the day.
The owners are also great people. I worked with Margy who gave me thorough answers and recommendations to all my questions. Her niece ended up babysitting for us one night, so that we could have a fun adult dinner out in town, and this worked out wonderfully. I had also asked Margy if she knew anyone who would cook for us and she recommended another family member (cousin?) who made us the most unbelievable traditional lobster dinner on our last night. It was so great that we all wished we had used her services earlier so that we could have had more meals prepared.
Anyhow, I could go on and on! Everything was just awesome from the location to the house to the owners. It was hands down the BEST vacation I've ever had with my kids. It's rare to be able to truly relax when traveling with kids (and in a house with 7 of them) but at Bait Can I really could. It's a magical place that I hope I am lucky enough to return to.
