Guestbook comments from the owner

Danielle K. brought a male stripper into our very upscale Inn suite against policy. We took the dog out at Midnight(we live on property) and caught her and group throwing a male stripper party. The next day we confronted her by emailing and asking her to stop by our house. We spoke to her and told her we found it offensive and disrespectful, a poor choice on her part and not allowed by policy but we would allow her and group to stay the final day. The conditions were, we were to inspect suite for damage. We arranged to do so when she told us she would be at "spa" and out of suite. We also told her we did not allow free visitor parking, which she continued to let her friends use.

There was more, but the bottom line is Danielle K. from Brooklyn/NYC area who is under age limit of 25 for renting at our inn, is not responsible. As an owner you do not want her to book your place unless you don't care about managing your rules. We have about 1% of our guests who are not good renters. Her mother, Sybil k. sent us a spam/flaming email after I contacted Danielle asking her if she really wanted to post her negative review because I would have to then write what she did. I thought it was pretty vendictive and another bad decision to Break the rules, be disrespectful to the owners and then have the nerve to write a horrible review and give a 1 star rating amidst our 5 star, well earned reviews. Not the kind of person you want to do business with. she never apologized.

Comfortable Accommodations in a Great Location

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in the Mod Suite. The suite is very cozy and well appointed. The property setting is in a quiet area that is still close to most of the areas of interest in Charleston. The owners are on property, very personable and accommodating.

Nice suite

The Mod suite is in a very good location with easy parking. It has a comfortable bed and fabulous shower. The fountain outside of the suite provides a nice setting for breakfast or evening drinks.

In the center of Charleston

  • 5 of 5

There were no surprises, everything is as it is described. Accommodations are updated, clean, well decorated and comfortable. Some mentioned that it was dark, but if you leave the window coverings open its very light and bright (although perhaps less private). The best part is that everything is an easy walk (that being said, sidewalks in Charleston are often narrow and uneven if you have any walking challenges). Realistically, you wouldn't need a car if you stayed here (and Uber is very convenient and inexpensive). Although if you do bring a car there is parking (mostly shaded). Outdoor space is shaded and a comfortable place to sit and have a cocktail or read. The only possible concern I would have is that the space is tight between size and furnishings, although it was fine for my husband and I (not a lot of room for putting your luggage out of the way if you have more than a small bag).

Owner's Response: Thank you for a wonderful rating and many kind words. There is a reference to suite being dark and I think it is unintendedly misleading. Suite has 12 windows and doors, 4 overhead lights and plenty of lamps. Kitchen has 3 windows, living room has 5 windows, bedroom has 3 windows and bathroom has 1 window. Unless you close all 12 opaque window shades, it is very light, sunny and open space in a "1813 carriage house". Interior walls/ceiling are white and 3 open to the outside. Furnishing are upholstered in light brown, white and off white and furniture is chosen for openess and comfort. In our subtropical climate you may wish to close some shades if getting direct sun on the East side and of course for bathing and sleeping or at night when using other rooms. You get a full 4 bright rooms and a porch and free parking for the same price as a simple hotel room. It is on the ground floor, great for accessibility and has private entrance in a very upscale, safe residential neighborhood in the centre of Charleston's historic district. We do provide authentic mid century bench, chair, 4 drawer dresser, and closet/shelves for belongings. Suite is furnished for short term rentals so if staying for an extended stay, like to travel with a lot or prefer to keep most in the bedroom, you may need a bedroom with more storage space. I recommend the Mary Scott or Coast Suite for more closet/luggage space. They each have multiple closets and more surfaces for things.

Great location, comfortable, friendly owners

  • 4 of 5

Great location in the historic district with off-street parking and an easy walk to everything. The Mod Suite is comfortable and we enjoyed eating breakfast on the lovely patio. Great modern shower. Rick and Glenda were very accommodating and lent us umbrellas for the brief rain we encountered and permitted us to leave our car in their parking area after checkout. However, when we arrived WIFI only worked well in the kitchen and although Rick did his best to fix it so that we could use it in the living room, it wasn't dependable. There was also a musty smell in the suite which cannot be helped by opening windows because they are painted shut (and there are no screens anyway). Bed only has end table and lamp on one side.

Owner's Response: As owners of a 205 year old Charleston home, I am addressing that we have foot thick brick walls and use wireless internet system. We have an Historic Easement and structural conditions that limit our internet options. But few guests find it lacking except when comparing to new hotels with trunk lines and direct wiring to rooms. So people who need super fast internet and are not willing to move around within the suite to find the strongest signal, I recommend a large hotel. Stay here for the location and charm and upscale accommodations, quiet, privacy, homelike environs, free parking, onsite owners. Our investigations show internet is fast with the exception of heavy usage of cable and weather/ server related problems. Check other reviews you will see that we have a very clean, renovated home, charming 205 walls, fireplaces and original elements. Concerning windows, consider you are in a subtropical tyle climate, high humidity, near sea level LowCountry. We have huge oversize new units for climate control. Opening window don't work for numerous reasons in Historic Charleston homes. Therefore the super-efficient HVAC is the best. Screens are not allowed on Historic Homes with easements. Because of humidity, old wooden windows do not open and close well, safety of guests with open windows is a concern and damage to suite from weather and rain and keeping insects and pollen out....., not to mention privacy and security reasons and sound control. We did notice this guests kept 11 blockout window coverings closed most of the time which makes the suite dark. Bed only has one end table because it has a door opening on the other side. A bench is provided that can easily be put by the bed. There are seven lamps + overhead lighting We really like to answer phone calls up front to people who have special needs such as those address above. We can and did move routers and check connection out from several spots in the suite. We explained all this to the guest while here and did everything we could to make the stay special. We responded super quickly but sometime expectations by guests for Historic Charleston small guest suites is to have perfection for everything for everybody. We just try to reach as high a standard as possible, as witnessed by the reviews of most. The four stars is appreciated. Negative comments put in perspective hopefully.

Perfect Charleston Weekend

  • 5 of 5

The Mod Suite ans Centre City Inn could not have been more perfect! It's evident the owners take great pride in pride in providing a beautiful, clean, comfortable, and luxurious get away for their guests. Rick was very helpful with all information and questions before arrival. The location is perfect, we walked everywhere! It was nice not having to hunt for parking and avoiding that hassle and expense. We try to get to Charleston every 1-2 years, we'll definitely return to Centre City Inn! Thank you!
