Sullivan’s Island has played an important role in Charleston’s history since the earliest days of English settlement. It has been closely associated with both the defense of the harbor, and the summer recreation habits of Charleston. 2202 Atlantic Avenue, constructed in 1935, has been a part of Sullivan’s Island reach history for almost 80 years, and is the perfect location for your family’s next vacation. Only on Sullivan’s Island can you experience 345 years of history, while enjoying one of the best beaches in Southeast. Better yet, from 2202 Atlantic Avenue, you can be in Historic Charleston in 15 minutes.
Ideally located at Station 22 ½, 2202 Atlantic Avenue is situated to allow easy access to the beach, as well as some of the best restaurants in Charleston! Poe’s, Sullivan’s, Salt at Station 22 and the new Obstinate Daughter, are all located within a two minute walk of the house. Even better, the Charleston Jetty, designed to protect the Harbor shipping channel, has created one of the widest and most beautiful beaches along the west side of Sullivan’s Island where 2202 Atlantic Avenue is located. The beach, the salt air and near constant breeze has made Sullivan’s Island the recreation hot spot for generations.
In 1935, when 2202 Atlantic Avenue was constructed, the center of the house activities was focused on the large screen front porch. Today, your family will spend hours relaxing on the screen porch where the prevailing southwesterly breezes will make the hottest Charleston summer day refreshing with the smell of the sea.
When entering this wonderful home, you will be amazed to find the original woodwork including hardwood floors and paneling. It is beautiful to see the artistry of the carpenters of the 1930’s. The décor of this rambling casual summer house is comfortable and with five bedrooms, it will easily accommodate up to twelve. The dining area seats eight with additional seating for four. Amenities include Wi-Fi, ping pong table, two screen porches, a living and family room and three full bathrooms.
Francis Hall, an Englishman, in the early 19th century wrote of Charleston in the summer: “All the inhabitants who can afford it, then fly to a barren sand-bank in the harbor, called Sullivan’s Island, containing one well, and a few plamettoes: here they dwell in wooden tenement, trembling in every storm, lest their hiding places should be blown over their heads or deluged by an inundation of the sea”. Well conditions have improved greatly on the island over the past 200 years, but the draw for summer vacationers is the same regardless of the century. Perfect location for beach and shopping. Beautiful high ceilings and spacious home.
Our family stayed for a college graduation. The house is much bigger than the pictures show. We had plenty of room to spread out between the living room, game room, screened in porch and outside porch. The kitchen is well stocked with great dishes, flatware, glasses and wine glasses for 12. Pots and pans were in great shape. The bedding was new and mattresses comfortable. Short walk to the beach and shops. You need to drive to Publix but only 5 minutes. Drive into downtown charleston was 15.
house is very well described, pictures are honest. We made little use of downstairs features so our comments should be read as reflecting on upstairs which has three bedrooms (but no king bed) and two baths...living room is very comfortable and outside porch is a HUGE asset. we stayed four full weeks and will definitely consider staying here again...location is terrific...property manager very responsive to requests
house is not suitable for people who have difficulty climbing stairs.
