About the property

2 Bedroom/2 Bath Spanish Style Cottage

A mere three minute walk to the Playa Pelada beach near the town of Nosara, Casa Tranquila is nestled in the quiet four home community of Rio Mar where wildlife such as howler monkeys, iguanas, pizotes (catamundi), hummingbirds, and red squirrels are common place. Enjoy the early morning wildlife visits and scenic garden as you swing in the front porch hammock enjoying your morning brew of Costa Rican coffee. Playa Pelada is a, less-traveled, scenic beach where beach front construction/developments are prohibited, leaving the beach and jungle shoreline pristine. The natural and uncompromised beauty of the beach coupled with the family friendly community of Pelada allows for a relaxing and quiet retreat during your stay.

Casa Tranquila is a two bedroom, two bath open floor plan cottage with custom made furnishings and decor. The Spanish influenced cottage with a vaulted cupola is fully air conditioned and includes wireless internet, phone, alarm system, washer/dryer, full kitchen, a safe sized to fit laptop computers, a backup water tank, and a storage room with ample room for surf boards. Fully equipped for sleeping four, the house has a queen size bed in the master bedroom and (2) twin beds in the guest bedroom making this house perfect for a small family.

Casa Tranquila’s centralized location is within walking distance of the Nosara river for fishing, boating, and horseback riding. Start your morning with a yoga class at the Nosara Resort (2 min walk) or the nearby Harmony Hotel or Bodhi Tree. Choose to hike the jungle path from the beach up to the Nosara Biological Reserve where a sprawling 90 acres of botanical beauty and wildlife makes bird watching a joy. During low tide, navigate over the volcanic rock and wade through the water to explore Pelada’s bat cave. Surfers also frequent Playa Pelada and a 10 min walk places you at the neighboring, surfing beach of Playa Guiones which offers some of the most consistent year-round surf. For the thrill seeker in you, Miss Sky Canopy Tour, the longest zip line in the world, is located within 1km. Nearby Ostional Wildlife Refuge protects marine turtle species and the “arribadas” at this beach are considered the largest in the world, with as many as a million sea turtle eggs laid in the beach nesting areas each year. As your day winds down, enjoy meeting the local community at sunset as homeowner’s make the evening “pilgrimage” to the beach to catch the last glimpse of the day’s sun in a picturesque and color-changing sky.

Nearby restaurants within walking distance include La Luna and Olgas for beach side dining, Il Pepporoni for pizza/sports bar, La Garta Lodge with a Sunset Bar that overlooks the mouth of the Nosara river.

About Bobbie

I originally came to Nosara in 2005 to train at the Nosara Yoga Institute (NYI) which transferred ownership and became the Bodhi Tree in 2016. I fell in love with the people and the charm of the area and returned the following year to buy a house. This place has a way of drawing people who tend to stay (e.g., ~10% of my graduating class at NYI moved to Nosara). Nosara holds a special place in my heart and is the place I feel most at home and where I can be my truest self in all of my world travels. Whether you are coming for the first time or a return visit, I think you will experience the magic of Nosara on your visit.

Bobbie purchased this cottage in 2006

Why Bobbie chose Guanacaste

I wanted a quaint and cozy cottage feel that was close to the beach. This house was under construction and I was able to make some design changes to suit my needs. This house has been under one owner since its construction.

Great house - near the beach and on the edge of the jungle!

  • 4 of 5

This is a beautiful home. Very quiet area, near several homes but still very private. Playa Pelada and Playa Guiones are a simple stroll away - 5-10 minute walk or a 3 minute drive. House has all the basic necessities. Never had a problem with water or electric. The jungle brought howler monkeys and red squirrels that we could watch and listen to from the house. We were there during dry season so we saw few birds but we are told they are abundant during other seasons.

Security is pretty tight - padlocks and security system in place. No concern for safety - though it's unfortunate throughout Costa Rica that you can't leave items in an unattended locked car without risking an attempted break- in. Same for most housing - can't leave things outdoors or unlocked when away from the house.

Only improvements I'd suggest are: larger coffee cups/mugs, new pillows, folding chairs to sit outdoors.

Everyone we met was friendly - ticos and travelers alike. We should have worked harder at learning more of the language but a limited vocabulary was not a block to communication - just made it slower and more interesting. Life and attitudes are very casual.

Cute, clean cottage with one problem

  • 4 of 5

We had a very nice time here! Playa Guiones is the place to rent if you're looking for a good social scene with restaurants, activities etc. but that's not why we came to Costa Rica. Playa Pelada is very peaceful and a nice fit for older folks who are looking to get away. Though the beach is a short drive away there are no toys, boogie boards, etc. at the house so families with young kids might want to keep that in mind. But on the plus side, this helps keep the house clean!

Though we had a wonderful time, I would have be reluctant to return until one issue is fixed. Because crime (mostly theft and burglary) is an issue, it's no surprise that there are bars on the windows and the doors. Unfortunately, there is no mechanism to release them from the inside in case of fire (required where we live), you need a key to open the front door from the inside, and back door is blocked by a gate that is padlocked shut. To make matters worse, there are no smoke detectors installed. I found this worrisome.

Were this issue resolved, I would be delighted to rent Casa Tranquila again. It's really a nice spot.

Great spot!

  • 5 of 5

Loved our stay at this amazing vacation home in Nosara area. We had a rental car and would suggest renting an ATV/Golf Cart if you do not have a vehicle as the home is a bit far from the main shops/restaurants. Virginie the property manager was extremely helpful and timely with her communications.

Cozy Secluded Casa

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at Casa Tranquila was great. It's perfect for a family of 4! The kitchen is spacious and has all the amenities you could ask for. If you like to cook a lot and are bringing check-in luggage, I would bring a chef's knife. I did find, however, that I was able to do most things with the steak knives that were provided. Also, we were there during the dry season and the water ran out at around 4:30pm and did not come back on until 8:30am in the morning. You have to fill up jugs of water to see you through to the evening. It isn't really a big deal, but it would have been helpful to know before we booked! We never did find out if we could drink the water at the house, but luckily we arrived with a big jug of water that we were able to pick up at a supermarket en route from the airport, thanks to our Gypsy Cab driver who kindly stopped there. The house is located about 8 minutes from the gorgeous beach by foot and is close to a fruit stand and a little grocery store, called La Bodega, that is stocked with many western things, they even carry hazelnut milk! It was great to have a washing machine, and we were able to use the phone to make local calls. We were urged to use the safe and to lock everything with multiple padlocks and set the alarm, which we did, but the area felt very safe, and all the locals were very friendly. There are many great spots to explore in Nosara, and the restaurants - La Luna and El Peperoni, like Erika, our hostess, recommended, were great. We also took an amazing tour with Experience Nosara through the mangroves and learned a lot about the local flora, fauna, and history. We didn't rent a car and found that it was easy to arrange rides anywhere. We walked to Guiones, and also flagged down a Tuk Tuk, but you can also hitch a ride easily, if you want to. We were traveling with another family who stayed at Beach Break Bungalos, so we were able to have the kids jump in the pool there and use our fantastic kitchen at Casa Tranquila for family meals. There is a little trail that you can take through the forest to get to the grocery store, it cuts the walk by about half. Overall, our experience was perfect, and I am only sorry that we were unable to do the dishes before we left! Thanks so much for a wonderful time!

Owner's Response: Regarding the water issue that was mentioned in this review, the municipality (ASADA) is making the decision about when water outages occur; homeowners have no control over this. They do their best to alternate between various beach neighborhoods so that no one neighborhood is overly burdened. Water outages occur when there are major breaks in water mains in the area and also due to the antiquated water facilities that the municipality has which can't always keep up with the water needs of the community. Therefore, sometimes the municipality will shutdown the water facilities at night, especially during dry seasons. Homeowners don't always know when this will occur, but information on water outages is usually posted on Facebook under the heading of Playas de Nosara ASADA. The water rationing is a fairly recent occurrence, and if this is a major concern to guests, please review the Facebook site for the most updated information. Also the potable water coming out of the pipes at the house is treated and drinkable. I personally usually buy large bottles of water as I don't like the taste of the potable water. Update: To help manage the water situation, I have installed a water holding tank and pump to provide water during the time when ASADA turns off the water.

Absolutely perfect!

  • 5 of 5

This house was absolutely perfect. We are a young family with two small children and found the house and location to be ideal. I appreciated how clean and thoughtful the set up was. The house had absolutely everything we needed for an enjoyable stay. Management even had a cleaning service come to the house half way through our stay which was super nice.

The community of Playa Pelada was also awesome. There were a few bars & restaurants and an ice cream joint was within walking distance, but everything closes down at 10pm so no need to worry about crazy partiers getting too wild. And of course Playa Pelada was a wonderful, quite beach. We alternated between going to Playa Pelada and Playa Quiones which was a little more populated and has more going on in terms of amenities and options.

We were so pleased with our stay at Casa Tranqila. This house is very well cared for and is managed well, which made for an amazing vacation!
