About the property

2 Bedroom, 1.5 Bathroom, 2 Decks, River Views, Gourmet Kitchen, Parking,

River’s Ridge has been tastefully restored and remodelled with beautiful period windows. This 100+ year old home features 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a large dining room, large living room, gourmet kitchen, large deck with barbecue, second deck overlooking the water, washer and dryer for laundry and off-street parking.

The master bedroom has a queen size bed with high quality mattress and linens, highboy dresser and matching lowboy plus closet. The second bedroom is larger and has 2 singe beds and a pull out couch. The house is really ideal for 2 couples as each would have a private bedroom. The bedrooms, desk sitting area and large 4 piece bathroom are located on the upper floor.

The main floor chef’s kitchen has maple countertops, new gas range, exhaust fan, farmhouse-style sink and a view down River and onto the outdoor dining deck with teak table and chairs. The kitchen windows open to catch the breezes and see the sunset. A second deck at the end of the garden, has Muskoka chairs and enhanced views for relaxing. From this deck you look down the Gananoque River to the oldest swing bridge in Ontario. Passing under this bridge by boat, kayak or canoe, puts you directly into the St Lawrence River and the very heart of the 1000 Islands.

The living room has comfortable, antique furniture and a 55 inch LED tv with free high speed wireless internet. There is also a Bose stereo that you can connect your iPod or computer to for music.

The automatic clothes washer and dryer is located in the basement.

River’s Ridge is the perfect “cottage in town” and a very unique property. You can go kayaking or boating, or walk to beautiful churches, the bell tower, grocery and liquor stores, bars, restaurants and museum. A sandy beach and an outdoor water park for children is a 5 minute walk. One of the top live theatres in Canada is nearby on the St Lawrence River and is a 5 minute walk from the house. There are trails for hiking and biking. A variety of River cruises are available and depart just 5 minutes from the house.

At River’s Ridge you can relax and cook gourmet meals or walk to amazing restaurants. With a gourmet kitchen, big dining room and outdoor propane barbecue and sitting areas, the options are many.

River's Ridge is ideal for those who want to get out and explore the region by car, bike or boat but have a comfortable place to come back to at the end of the day that is walking distance from shopping, entertainment, dining and all.

The owners will happily connect you with a nearby kayak or boat rental company. The owners can often accommodate boat docking on a large, secure dock just a few doors down the street.

About Caroline Yung

We have been coming to this area and our 1000 Island property for 30 years. We have travelled the world extensively for business and pleasure. We have visited many great spots in Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia and the America’s but the 1000 Islands region remans our favourite. We use HomeAway almost exclusively for our travel accommodation needs and recommend it to all.

Caroline Yung purchased this house in 2013

Why Caroline Yung chose Gananoque

We own another property, which is now our full-time home, very near by, so we're close by if you need help! We bought River’s Ridge because it had such a great presence on the River and within town. It’s a historic home with great windows and a stone foundation. 100 years ago it was likely a local workers simple home. We restored things and updated others. It has all new plumbing, electrical, gas heat and a fantastic kitchen to cook in and relax.

What makes this house unique

This home is truly unique in Gananoque offering:

an on the River experience

an in town experience within walking distance to everything

an aesthetic appeal that is comfortable and relaxed

there are perennial gardens out front and back with quiet sitting places

Owner's Response: Thank you both for the great review. We enjoyed renovating the house and finding ways to incorporate "architectural salvage" things with a gourmet approach to cooking. While we live nearby, we agree that the views from the kitchen and deck at Rivers Ridge are amazing. They are frankly the best in town on the Gan River and because of how the house is situated, you see both the Gan River and St. Lawrence. We enjoyed meeting you and found once again that people who like dogs and care for their dogs are always good people! If you decide to vacation in Gananoque again, please contact us, we''ll look for a good weather day and take you on an boat tour of the islands with us.

Happy August on the St Lawrence, Gananoque

  • 5 of 5

After a seven hour journey we were happily welcomed by Carolyn to her home on an inlet of the great St. Lawrence. Carolyn was very informative and gave me a 'prideful' tour of her house. Everything in it's place and a place for everything. Each room was more cheery than the previous and immaculate. We settled in very quickly. The beds were comfortable and smelt so fresh. What a pleasure to be able to open windows and enjoy fresh air aplenty. Loved the thick, white bath towels too. Lots to do in the area and always good to return home to our comfortable base. We would not hesitate to recommend this little gem.

A perfect place for our girl's getaway!

  • 5 of 5

This cozy, beautifully restored cottage was a perfect place for our annual trip. Caroline met us there with the keys, showed us around and gave us tips on local attractions. We immediately felt right at home. Best of all the location was perfect for walking to shops, restaurants and the wonderful local theater. The house is perfectly arranged for comfortable gathering spots or quiet spots, outdoors or indoors for some moments on you own. I would highly recommend the home as a perfect base for your 1000 Islands vacation. Thank you Caroline and Doug!

Owner's Response: We're delighted that you and your friends enjoyed the 1000 Islands! Thank you for your comments. The walking factor has been a plus for many of our guests. We have two theatres in town, many restaurants and shops to explore. And of course being so close to the River, there are numerous water activities. Consider our place for a winter getaway to enjoy hiking, site seeing, ice fishing and more!

Fabulous house full of character; beautifully and uniquely restored. Very creative.

A visual pleasure located central to everything. Very pedestrian friendly 👍🏻 No complaints to be had - well appointed, sparkly clean and comfortable. A little warm in the main room and dining area during August; strategic use of a fan helped dissipate the heat. Great location with beautiful views from the back R&R area - unplug and enjoy. Great little vacay in Ontario 👍🏻

Wonderful family stay in a lovely home in a fantastic location

  • 5 of 5

The home was very clean and spacious enough for our family of four to relax comfortably. The kitchen was well-equipped and everything you could need is within an easy walk. The back garden with its sitting area over the water was our favourite spot. We would definitely stay again.

Five Star Experience!

  • 5 of 5

Can't really say enough positive things about "The Red House" and the Town of Gananoque. Caroline and Doug offer Five Star accommodation in the heart of historic Gan. The house is exceptionally clean and comfortable, and includes everything you need, plus more! It has very large rooms with great views so you are comfortable no matter what the weather. Various guests joined us throughout our visit and everyone raved about the house -- its restoration; the gourmet kitchen and outdoor BBQ; the amazing decor and artwork; the decks and the river views; the friendly Gan residents; the "walkability" to Gan restaurants, shops and the Playhouse Theatre; and the proximity to the Gananoque and St. Lawrence Rivers. Caroline and Doug offer responsive and superb hospitality, and we can't wait to return next year!

Gananoque is known as the "Gateway to the 1000 Islands". It is located where the Gananoque River meets the St. Lawrence River and is within an area known as the "The Frontenac Arch". The arch is a large area of some of the earth's oldest granite rock that joins the Appalachian mountains in the USA with the Canadian Shield. The 1000 Islands are the remains of granite mountains that were worn down by glaciers 10,000 years ago. The granite rock (often pink), blue sky and waters and green forests make this one of the most beautiful areas anywhere. Please look up Frontenac Arch Biosphere for lots of information on what to discover and enjoy here.
