About the property

2 Bedroom, 1.5 Bathroom, 2 Decks, River Views, Gourmet Kitchen, Parking,

River’s Ridge has been tastefully restored and remodelled with beautiful period windows. This 100+ year old home features 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a large dining room, large living room, gourmet kitchen, large deck with barbecue, second deck overlooking the water, washer and dryer for laundry and off-street parking.

The master bedroom has a queen size bed with high quality mattress and linens, highboy dresser and matching lowboy plus closet. The second bedroom is larger and has 2 singe beds and a pull out couch. The house is really ideal for 2 couples as each would have a private bedroom. The bedrooms, desk sitting area and large 4 piece bathroom are located on the upper floor.

The main floor chef’s kitchen has maple countertops, new gas range, exhaust fan, farmhouse-style sink and a view down River and onto the outdoor dining deck with teak table and chairs. The kitchen windows open to catch the breezes and see the sunset. A second deck at the end of the garden, has Muskoka chairs and enhanced views for relaxing. From this deck you look down the Gananoque River to the oldest swing bridge in Ontario. Passing under this bridge by boat, kayak or canoe, puts you directly into the St Lawrence River and the very heart of the 1000 Islands.

The living room has comfortable, antique furniture and a 55 inch LED tv with free high speed wireless internet. There is also a Bose stereo that you can connect your iPod or computer to for music.

The automatic clothes washer and dryer is located in the basement.

River’s Ridge is the perfect “cottage in town” and a very unique property. You can go kayaking or boating, or walk to beautiful churches, the bell tower, grocery and liquor stores, bars, restaurants and museum. A sandy beach and an outdoor water park for children is a 5 minute walk. One of the top live theatres in Canada is nearby on the St Lawrence River and is a 5 minute walk from the house. There are trails for hiking and biking. A variety of River cruises are available and depart just 5 minutes from the house.

At River’s Ridge you can relax and cook gourmet meals or walk to amazing restaurants. With a gourmet kitchen, big dining room and outdoor propane barbecue and sitting areas, the options are many.

River's Ridge is ideal for those who want to get out an explore the region by car, bike or boat but have a comfortable place to come back to at the end of the day that is walking distance from shopping, entertainment, dining and all.

The owners will happily connect you with a nearby kayak rental company or can facilitate the rental of a 16 foot aluminum boat and motor. The owners can often accommodate boat docking on a large, secure dock just a few doors down the street.

About Caroline Yung

We have been coming to this area and our 1000 Island property for 30 years. We have travelled the world extensively for business and pleasure. We have visited many great spots in Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia and the America’s but the 1000 Islands region remans our favourite. We use HomeAway almost exclusively for our travel accommodation needs and recommend it to all.

Caroline Yung purchased this house in 2013

Why Caroline Yung chose Ontario

We own another property, which is now our full-time home, very near by, so we're close by if you need help! We bought River’s Ridge because it had such a great presence on the River and within town. It’s a historic home with great windows and a stone foundation. 100 years ago it was likely a local workers simple home. We restored things and updated others. It has all new plumbing, electrical, gas heat and a fantastic kitchen to cook in and relax.

What makes this house unique

This home is truly unique in Gananoque offering:

an on the River experience

an in town experience within walking distance to everything

an aesthetic appeal that is comfortable and relaxed

there are perennial gardens out front and back with quiet sitting places

Charming Character Home in Gananoque

  • 4 of 5
Verified Stay

As two couples who travel together ,we enjoyed this property.

It was very well located, quiet, and well equipped. The deck and river view made for relaxed outdoor evenings

It was an excellent base for exploring the magnificent 1000 Islands waterways, historical towns and markets, visiting Ottawa and playing golf at the wonderful Smugglers Glen golf course.

Our host Caroline was welcoming and very helpful.

We stayed for 3 nights and have just scratched the surface of what the area has to offer, hope to return some day.

Great location for daytrips

  • 4 of 5
Verified Stay

We recently returned from our first trip to Gananoque and the Thousand Islands area. The house was centrally located and an easy walk to the restaurants, museums and central area of town. "Living like a local" made it extra fun and we appreciated the convenient parking.

We enjoyed the trip to Kingston and Brockville and learned more about, the Tall Ships, the War of 1812 and other historical reference points. It was also a short drive to the Antique Boat Museum in Clayton, NY. Definitely a must-see! We will be back in the area to spend more time at Boldt Castle and take a trip to Ottawa.

Beautiful "home" away from home

  • 5 of 5
Verified Stay

The River Ridge is very comfortable with everything you need in a "home" away from home. You can tell that details are very important to Caroline & Doug. They thought of everything from decor to comfort. We had breakfast every day in the well-equipped kitchen, then ventured out to explore the town, taking the river tour, visiting the museums, swimming and paddle boarding, then grilling out one night. Our family found sitting outside with the cooling breezes from the river one of our favorite things to do every day.

River Ridge is set in location that makes it easy to walk to all dining, shops and entertainment in Gananoque. Entertainment is as fun filled or as low keyed as you want.

We ventured out of town to Ottawa (2 hours away) for a half day trip and then to Kingston (30 minutes away) for dinner on our last night. Next time Kingston will have to be a full day trip, it's a very short ride and the small city has lots to explore with the big city feel. Then returning to the comforts of "home" to River Ridge to relax.

Owner's Response: That's what we love to hear! The magic of this area is that Ottawa, Kingston and Gananoque can all entertain for days on end ... and that's before venturing out on our amazing River and the 1000 Islands. Thanks for being such great guests and even popping the laundry in when you left! Doug & Caroline

This cottage is everything you would want in a vacation home. It is lovingly restored with many quirky features! The kitchen is a dream for anyone who likes to cook! The deck, with a gas barbecue, is ideal for dinner. The garden, overlooking the river, catches the evening breeze and is great for sunset drinks. It is convenient to food stores, LCBO, river cruises and many restaurants. We loved our stay here, and would highly recommend it to anyone. Thank you, Caroline.

Owner's Response: Thank you! We had a lot of fun ensuring Rivers Ridge takes best advantage of the views and breezes and with the help of our friends at BalleyCanoe (architectural salvage) we found some great "quirky" things to integrate. Gananoque is a gem of a town with so much to do on shore or out in the islands. Hope you got to enjoy a bit of both and we'd love to see you back.

Outstanding Property!

  • 5 of 5
Verified Stay

This vacation rental was outstanding for our recent vacation in the picturesque Thousand Islands area. The house is an historic property beautifully restored and decorated with gallery-quality furnishings and art (loved the photography!) It is extremely clean and has everything needed for a very comfortable vacation. The gourmet kitchen is exceptional; it and the bathrooms contain many items you don't usually get in a vacation rental. The bedrooms and beds are extremely comfortable, including quality linens. The living and dining rooms are bright and spacious. The river views from the house and the ridge deck are captivating. The property is located in the quaint town of Gananoque so everything is a short stroll away -- restaurants and shops, groceries and LCBO, Thousand Islands Playhouse Theatre, Gananoque Boat Line, etc. Day trips to Kingston, Rockport, and along the Thousand Islands Parkway rounded out our week which passed in a blur. The friendly property owners live in town and were very attentive, and in particular immediately addressed a landscaping maintenance issue that vastly enhanced the river view. We had perfect weather during our stay and enjoyed meals on the upper deck that has a new propane BBQ. The house perfectly met all our needs and I highly recommend it to those who are looking for a "town cottage" where history is beautifully blended with modern comfort and convenience. Thank you to the property owners for creating such a wonderful vacation home!

Owner's Response: Thank you for such a nice review. We honestly feel really great when guests confirm in such glowing terms that all the effort that went into River's Ridge ... works. Again, we appreciate your time to write this as well as your idea to trim the hedge a bit. The view is even better. Hope we see you again. Cheers ... Doug & Caroline

Great getaway in the heart of Gananaque!

  • 5 of 5

We were after a private retreat for our honeymoon—a place to get away from it all but still have everything at our fingertips: sightseeing, dining, entertainment. River's Ridge was perfect. A beautiful old house, beautifully remodelled. Definitely "cottage in town" as it's billed, cosy but lots of room (tons for us two plus visitors; it would be lots of room for a bigger family or two couples lookig for a 2-bedroom accommodation). It mixes classic elements with modern amenities—not the least of them the beautiful new kitchen—perfectly. The location is perfect, letting us lounge in the back overlooking the river, and walk to Thousand Island Playhouse and the great local restaurants and shops Gananoque has to offer. Caroline was super-helpful with tips on what to see and where to go. In every way, a perfect experience!

Owner's Response: Thank you for the lovely comments. When my husband and I found this house it had great old bones and a warm inviting feeling ... but it needed some help. There is a great architectural salvage place near here called Ballycanoe (we recommend a visit!) and we were able to incorporate select pieces like the hand-carved beams and maple boiler doors. We had a lot of fun doing it and it's nice to see it appreciated by our guests. Caroline

Gananoque is known as the "Gateway to the 1000 Islands". It is located where the Gananoque River meets the St. Lawrence River and is within an area known as the "The Frontenac Arch". The arch is a large area of some of the earth's oldest granite rock that joins the Appalachian mountains in the USA with the Canadian Shield. The 1000 Islands are the remains of granite mountains that were worn down by glaciers 10,000 years ago. The granite rock (often pink), blue sky and waters and green forests make this one of the most beautiful areas anywhere. Please look up Frontenac Arch Biosphere for lots of information on what to discover and enjoy here.

We will hold the house for up to 48 hours while things are finalized with a rental agreement. However, waiting too long to make a decision can result in the house being rented to another person.
