The house was built in 1909 and is listed for its architectural significance in both the United States and New York State Register of Historical Places. The apartment is located on the third floor of a large well maintained brownstone townhouse that has retained most of its original architectural components including; seven fireplaces, bow front windows, decorative masonry, oak staircase, 11 foot tall pier mirror in hallway, wainscoting and mosaic tile entryway floor. There is a skylight which brings natural light into the stairway.

Free flowers and organic fruits and vegetables from the owner's garden -- when available.

The apartment is bathed in natural light and has a large eat-in kitchen. The kitchen table is a stylish large midcentury breakfast bar. The kitchen is excellently designed for cooking and dining. The kitchen is fully stocked to suit the needs of most cooks. The Brita water filter provided makes NYC tap water even more delicious.

The master bedroom is extremely large and has a beautiful fireplace original to the building. The furniture is a combination of antiques and contemporary pieces. The building owner's collection of midcentury ceramics paintings are present throughout the apartment as are paintings from contemporary Brooklyn artists. There is a queen size sleigh bed in this room situated in front of a three window bow front. The amount of sun that bathes both bedrooms is truly pleasurable. There is a large marble table in the room with a 1950's wooden 'atomic shaped base' and matching chairs.

In brownstone townhouses the second bedroom was traditionally called 'the gentleman's bedroom'. It is smaller than the other bedroom but also accommodates a queen size bed and has its own closet/storage area.

The living room has period fireplace original to the house, midcentury Scandinavian string chairs, a wrought iron glass top table and a trundle bed/couch which comfortably sleeps two adults. This room has its original beautiful parquet wood floor. An Austen Air Hepa air filter is provided for your healthful pleasure

The bathroom is as sunny and airy as the rest of the apartment. It has its original green antique shell tile accents on the wall, and original cast iron claw foot tub -- which is perfect for a long deep soak after a day of sightseeing . This tub is much larger than contemporary tubs and has an overhead shower attachment. The bathroom's Lucite storage unit houses a plethora of towels, complimentary toiletries and is topped by a sun loving ponytail palm.

OWNER OCCUPIED: This is very similar to a bed and breakfast without the additional cost. Unlike most vacation rentals the owner and his family live in the building. There is usually someone there to answer your questions or give you a native New Yorker's advice on this city. The building's owner is a published author and will give a Free personally inscribed edition of one of his coffee table sized art/history of NY books to every group who stays at his home for at least five days. This is a non-smoking building.

PLEASE NOTE: The apartment is on the 2nd floor so you will be walking up the stoop (stairs leading up to the entranceway pictured below) and then two flights of internal stairs. There is no elevator.

Why Michael chose Brooklyn

This brownstone has most of the original architectural details that make them so charming; bow front windows, decorative masonry, oak staircases, 7 fireplaces and a tile entryway. The house is convenient to both the A, C and 3,4 subway lines.

I grew up in Brooklyn and always aspired to be a Brownstone owner. I've found North Crown Heights to be a warm welcoming neighborhood. A few blocks from my home is an urban oasis -- Brower Park. I am just a 15 minute walk to both Prospect Park and the Brooklyn Museum.

I work in Manhattan but I am delighted to come home to Brooklyn. You will be too.

What makes this house unique

I chose to buy this house because it has almost all of its original architectural details. Its tile entranceway extends all through the 1st floor landing. I've purchased an 11foot tall pier mirror which graces the entranceway and is of the time period to the house. The apartments are large and the high ceilings make them feel even larger.

Comfortable and Welcoming

Our family stayed for 5 days in late july and could not have been made more welcome. Michael and his son O'Neall are restoring this lovely brownstone in a diverse neighborhood in Brooklyn and working hard to make his two units perfect for getaways.

The house is convenient to public transport (easy walk) and there is a good grocery store (with a nice organic section) about 5-7 minutes walk.We didn't cook any meals, but had snacks and breakfast at the apartment.We had everything we needed in the kitchen.

The clawfoot tub/shower was lovely, and we had plenty of towels and there were spare toiletries just in case too. Our girls enjoyed the cable tv when we got back tired at night, and the wifi meant we could easily plan our day and public transit. Michael also left takeout menus, transit maps, and city guides in the apartment for our use. Nice touch.

Now, Crown Heights is a real Brooklyn neighborhood. If you're looking for swanky hipster Brooklyn, this isn't it. But we were comfortable, welcome, and felt perfectly safe in this nice most-family neighborhood.

We got a tour of their lovely organic garden on our last day. So nice! We were made to feel welcome but never intruded upon. The lovely Brooklyn Brownstone made our Brooklyn stay great!

Good for Price / Excellent Host

This property suited our needs very well. Michael was a tremendous host who was responsive, flexible and really friendly. We have a family with 5 children and needed a place to sleep 7. We didn't intend to spend time in the property outside of sleeping and maybe catching a bite and it served well. Michael was very helpful when we couldn't find a pump for the aerobed that was provided.

The property had good access to public transport and a grocery store.

Having lived in NYC 20 years earlier I wasn't sure what to expect from the neighborhood and had heard about the changes occurring in Brooklyn and Harlem from when I had previously lived there, but was uncertain of what it was going to be like. I am not sure I would have considered bringing a family with me in the early 90's. That being said, based on other users experience we felt like giving it a go. Our rental car sat undisturbed and had no issues for the 3.5 days we were there (be sensitive to street cleaning rules that govern time frames and days of the week) and during daylight hours had no concerns about safety. In the later evenings when we were returning home we had one issue where some people were hollering at each other that made my kids nervous, that was clearly out of the control of the owner and it wasn't on the property, but rather between the property and the subway stop. For those unaccustomed to urban living this property may be a little shocking as it has some variety of housing and residents in the neighborhood, but it worked well for us excepting that single incident. Given the price points and the objectives we had for the property this was a good find. My only reason for not giving a full 5 stars is that the "extra guest" costs were a little steeper and cut into the perception of value per dollar that we received. But this is a good property with the right expectations in mind and you can't beat the host.

Very comfortable place to stay in Crown Heights, Brooklyn

I stayed in Michael's apartment for 9 nights in April 2017 with a friend and it was very comfortable. He was a great host, quick to reply to questions prior to my arrival, and very happy to sit down and share his local knowledge. The apartment was in a good location, close to the subway, close to shops (including a supermarket) and about a 25 minute walk from quite a few cafes and restaurants in an up-and-coming part of Brooklyn.

Be aware that the apartment is old and has a lot of potential for renovation. This isn't the place if you want all the mod-cons. Having said that, the bed was one of the most comfortable I've had in my many years of travelling (it was very firm, which I liked, not all will), and Michael had all the amenities we needed - TV, wifi, a functioning kitchen and bathroom.

Importantly, I felt safe in the neighbourhood, and there were quite a few nights we were walking back from the subway after 11pm. Thanks Michael, hopefully it won't be too long before my next visit to your beautiful city. Mel (and Kerri)

Charming 2nd floor rental in up-and-coming neighborhood

I stayed in this townhome with my husband and daughter for two nights over Easter weekend. The location was great for us as we like to be slightly off the beaten path, but we were still close to a lot of great places such as the Brooklyn Children's museum and good food options within walking distance. If you are a light sleeper, this may not be the place for you since the bed is right near the second floor window so the noise from outside can be quite loud. The host was very easy to reach, was responsive to our questions and made sure we had everything we needed. When I asked for an iron (there was already one in the apartment, but I hadn't looked properly) he brought us a second one right away.

Not convienent to Times Square for us.

We had booked this property but didn't stay there. It was a 10 to 15 minute walk to the subway and we didn't feel safe walking in the area at night. It was a 30 min. subway ride to Times Square. It wasn't a convenient location for 4 women. It was to far away if you wanted to go back and rest before seeing shows at night. The apartment was old and not as nice as the pictures appear.

Owner's Response: I don't normally respond to reviews but I think this one needs one. The guests were four elderly women from rural Texas (their description in their reservation - not mine). My home was obviously not a good fit for their expectations and I immediately and graciously refunded their fees. I'm sorry they did not feel comfortable walking in my neighborhood at night. They did not stay until nighttime so I don't know how they made a rational decision about this. I doubt if they would feel comfortable walking anywhere in New York City at night. My neighborhood is totally safe. Yes, it takes 30 minutes to get to Times Square from my home in Brooklyn. That is not a lot of travel time. My home is three blocks from the subway. I'm a man in my mid 60's and it takes me 6 minutes to walk to the subway. The house is over 100 years old. That is why it is in the National Register of Historic places for architectural significance. I make this clear in the description of my home.
