There is not another place like it. Beach, harbor, and cabin with spectacular view on 2 acres is unheard of. Plus it is totally remote yet 15 minutes from shopping.
Next door is Dubuque County's, Finleys Landing Park . 120 acres of rugged hiking. Climb the 150 foot river bluff for a spectacular view of the Mississipi River valley. For those non-hikers try a 15 minute drive to Balltown, the view from the viewing area is spectacular. While in Balltown check out Breitbachs Country Dining for a meal or drink. It is the oldest tavern in Iowa.
Dan's cabin is in a breathtakingly beautiful location - not to mention that the cabin itself was immaculate, well-stocked, and the property was in extremely well-maintained condition. We were blown away with how nice and clean everything was. We had a great girls weekend and I will definitley be back to this cabin sometime. If my husband is lucky he will get to come next time! HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend staying here for a wonderful ambience and memorable get-away. Thanks Dan!
I offer other options for a change of pace but even the teens wonder why grandma would mess with the perfect place for our annual family gathering. They look forward to the familiar and seek out (and find!) new adventures; for some of us, the beach is all we need! The youngest asks if we are going to "our" cabin this summer. I guess so!
We had a great stay & the owners were awesome! Spent a lot of time sitting at the fire pit - plenty of wood provided. Open plan kitchen / dining / living room facing the gas fireplace was wonderful.
A few of the previous renters have been rough on some of the stuff, especially the kitchenware (pots, pans, glassware, etc) and the amenities (bathrooms, appliances) are more serviceable than luxuriant, but all was VERY clean and tidy.
A point of listing clarity - the home has a split level design: you walk into the main living areas (sunroom, living, dining, kitchen), but then you have to go either up a half flight of stairs to the bedrooms that flank a Jack & Jill powder room (the front bdrm has an amazing view of the river & the rear is tucked into the bluff & woods) OR down a half flight of stairs to the basement laundry area flanked by the full bath in one end and the third bedroom in the other end. (The point being that ALL bedrooms are accessed via stairs - which may be an issue for some.)
We stayed in October and the nearby campground was virtually empty, and so was the beach - I can see how it could be a more "energetic" experience during the busy summer months.
There are train tracks at the bottom of the long yard, but surprisingly not that many trains & didn't bother us at all (my kiddos thought they were awesome). The barges on the river were neat too since the channel is pretty close to shore.
Location is close to Dubuque (about 20min) and so is Breitbachs famous dining, but any other entertainments will take you quite bit farther afield... But this place is perfect if you want to sit around a warm fire with an amazing view and super easy access to the only sandy beach around - we were very happy with the visit & plan to return next fall too!
We had a great stay even though the week was rainy. We plan to rent again next year.
We loved the convenient location to Dubuque, Galena and the many rural towns.
It felt like home. Thanks again!
We stayed here for our 25th anniversary and it was a great choice! Was thinking I would be writing a longer review, but Dan was spot on with the description, so no need for me to ramble on and will just make this short and sweet. All we can say is ‘Wow!’. The location is great. The cabin is great. We will be back Dan!
Zip Lining is nearby, All activities are within 20 minutes except hot air ballooning and horseback riding which are 1 hour
