There is a large marble table in the room with a 1950's wooden 'atomic shaped base' and matching chairs.

In brownstone townhouses the second bedroom was traditionally called 'the gentleman's bedroom'. It is smaller than the other bedroom but also accommodates a queen size bed and has its own closet/storage area.

About Michael

Hi: I'm Michael the owner of this home. I'm a native New Yorker, from the great Borough of Brooklyn. I've traveled all over the globe but Brooklyn is home. I live in this house with my family. My Manchester Terrier, Crixus, enjoys walks around the neighborhood and would happily accompany any of you who are homesick for your pet.

I write about New York and am happy to give advice about this great town.

I'm delighted to give one autographed and personally inscribed copy of a coffee table sized art/history book to any group of visitors to my home who stay at least five days.

Though I won't intrude on your privacy -- I hope during your stay we become friends and you will want to stay with me again when you come to NYC.

Michael purchased this house in 2011

Why Michael chose Crown Heights

This property is special, not only is it listed in both the NY State and National Register of Historical places for its architectural significance but it was built relatively late for a brownstone townhouse 1909 -- so the rooms are very large, much larger than the brownstones built earlier and the ceilings are very high. The house has many of the original architectural details, which are lacking in many of the recently restored buildings.

What makes this house unique

The bathroom has the house's original cast iron claw foot tub. These bathtubs are much larger and deeper than contemporary tubs. Having a good long soak after a day of exploring NYC is an added benefit.

I'm also a collector. The furniture, artwork and just feel of the house reflect my particular taste.

Review for Rental in Brooklyn

  • 5 of 5

We are four 21 year olds who had never had the opportunity to explore New York City on our own and did not know anyone in the city. Prior to the trip, Michael was extremely helpful. He was very patient and responded to all my questions immediately. This was also my first time using this website and he made the process much easier.

Upon arrival, he helped us carry our luggage upstairs and gave some history to the house and the neighbourhood which was appreciated. We had questions about the transit system and locations of things in the neighbourhood as well as things to do in the city and he gave us the appropriate information.

The apartment itself was wonderful. We slept comfortably and did not run into any technical issues. There were plenty of towels and linens for us to use freely. We used the kitchen everyday and enjoyed it. The bathroom was nice, though the Hot and Cold taps on the shower are switched and it took us a bit to figure that out! The view was wonderful and the WiFi was a major plus.

The neighbourbood was something we also enjoyed. We had the option of 2 subway stops within a 10 minute walk and we frequented the Super Food Town grocery store where the manager took the time to get to know us!

We would often return back to the apartment very late at night and we never ran into any issues.

Overall, we loved New York City and this rental played a role in our positive experience. We recommend it to anyone looking for a comfortable stay in a great neighbourhood. We would like to thank Michael for the experience!

Great Place-Great Neighborhood-Great Host

  • 5 of 5

This is the second time I am staying here. The first time it was with my parents and siblings. This time my friends and I came down as a group from Montreal to explore Brooklyn and the rest of New York City.

The house is as it was before-spacious, full of light and it was large enough that the eight of us did not feel cramped. The apartment was clean, there were enough dishes for us all to have breakfast and eat take out meals together. We could have cooked but take out was easier and the host left plenty of menus for us to choose from.

When I was here before the air conditioners kept us cool in the midst of a New York heat wave. Now the apartment is very warm thanks to the old reliable steam heat. Sometimes we have to crack a window because it does get hot. These old buildings have their quirks, the stair case is a little crooked but it is secure. Buildings back then were built solidly and it shows.

As young adults we never could have afforded to stay in a hotel since they are so much more expensive and this apartment fulfilled all our needs very well. And I have to admit I've come to enjoy having a good hot soak in that gigantic claw foot tub in the bathroom. The flat screen TV has many more cable channels than home--including all the premium ones. The WiFi at times took a while to start up but once it got going it was dependable and real fast. It never was overwhelmed even when all of us were using it. There was a hepa air filter in the apartment which we did not use but made one of our group feel comfortable since she has a lot of allergies.

The building is only three blocks to the nearest subway. It then takes about 15-20 minutes to get into Manhattan. But we found a lot to do in Brooklyn. The neighborhood the house is in is residential but there were plenty of places to go within walking distance in the evenings if we did not feel like traveling into Manhattan. The car service the host suggested was even cheaper than Uber and it provided a van that fit all of us when we departed for the airport.

Some of my friends were more knowledgeable than I about building design. I found the area visually exciting even if I did not have the specific knowledge to determine the different building styles.

We always felt safe, which is saying a lot for a bunch off girls in a foreign country. The host was easily available and reachable by text.

We had a great time and will come back. Thanks. And we will recommend this place to our friends.

Large Spacious Clean Apartment

  • 5 of 5

There were four of us down from Ontario for a conference. We chose this apartment instead of the hotel where the conference was being held because of the difference in price. New York hotels, it seems, allow four to a room but they charge additional fees for anyone over two people.

Not only was this apartment much less expensive than a hotel it was a whole apartment and allowed us the luxury of having enough space to feel comfortable.

The house was very old by New York standards, over 100 years in age so we made allowances for the usual signs of wear and tear of something that is over a century in age. But that also was its charm. There were two fireplaces that I'm sure were original to the house, plaster moldings and even a claw foot tub which was very spacious and great to come home to in the evenings. There's nothing like a good hot soak after a hectic day.

The beds were comfortable, actually extremely comfortable. I travel a lot for work and I have to say this was the most comfortable bed I've slept in, away from my own home in a very long time.

The kitchen was well stocked -- though we mostly only used it for breakfast meals and late night take-out. The owner supplied us with numerous restaurant menus to choose fro. He also left tourists guide books for us which we did not get to use but it was thoughtful none the less.

The best thing about the apartment was the amount of light which streamed in from both ends of the apartment.

We had very little contact with the owner but he answered our texts quickly and supplied the information we asked for. He was also very accommodating concerning both our requests for an early check in and later than planned check out times.

We traveled the subway at all hours of the day and evening and at all times felt totally safe since there were always numerous people on the street. There is a supermarket just a few blocks away that is open until midnight and numerous restaurants and delis in the neighborhood which seem to never close.

One of our group was an architectural history buff and he delighted in walking around the neighborhood finding gems, according to him, not only Brownstones but mansions that predated the Brownstones to when Brooklyn was an independent City before it became part of New York City.

It only took a few minutes to get to the subway from the house and the ride from there to Manhattan took on average 15-20 minutes. The subways were easy too figure out and our host had also supplied us with maps.

Dirty and run down

  • 1 of 5

We checked in late on a Friday and had difficulty finding the address. Turns out that the street address numbers were falling off of the rotting front door. Our climb to the third floor was an adventure up a tilted staircase. The apartment was more than dirty. It had years of accumulated grime in every corner, the floors were dirty, the bathroom seemed like it hadn't been cleaned in quite some time and the furniture pictured in the ad page is now beaten up, stained and broken down. Making our bed as we were packing to leave we discovered some disturbing stains on our duvet. Be aware that the photos used to advertise this property are misleading in that they were likely taken the last time this apartment was truly clean.

Also the "charming" neighborhood came complete with a boarded up building across the street and our first trip to the subway included a surprise public urination. This is not the "new and hip" Brooklyn... I would be happy to include photos if there were a place to do so here.

Brief stay in Brooklyn

  • 3 of 5

I hadn't realised that the second bedroom was off the main bedroom.. this was actually okay for us and the friends we were staying with but I can imagine it might be strange in other circumstances.
